Couldn't play SimCity for the first week you owned it? Still can't play the game the way it was advertised? Tired of EA feeding you excuse after excuse? Too bad, you are just being petty and juvenile. :p

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t shake your fist indignantly and shout “but games are art!” then hold game designers to a different standard. SimCity may not be the game you wanted, the game my boss wanted or the game I frankly wanted, but accusing EA of lying and double-dealing and speculating like a bunch of anti-government conspiracy nuts just makes us seem petty and juvenile. No one’s forcing us to buy the game or making our sense of self-satisfaction contingent on SimCity conforming to our personal tastes (the latter’s all us).

Damn people, thinking they are ENTITLED* to a game they paid for.

*Entitled meaning something clearly different than the dictionary says.

Oh I get how it works in business now; I can tell people I'll sell them XYZ for their hard earned $$, I only end up giving them X and if they're upset it's only because they are dumb and don't get it, it's art!

More like the Con artist...

In other news, EA ceo got shit canned! Oh i mean he stepped down. Woohoo!

weather its a game, a car, or anything else you pay for, when you dont get what you pay for, it pisses you off

I'm so sick of "tech journalists" writing stupid shit to get page views/attention.

I hope the CEO decided i cant deal with all the backlash im leaving the ship before it runs aground lol

I would understand if people were complaining ONLY about a broken game, but people who apparently bought the game also want to complain about always-on DRM, which EA has NEVER said the game wasn't going to have. I don't understand why people complain about stuff that every review pretty much states "you can only play this game online", and then people want to yell "why can't I play this game offline?" It's idiotic.

The simplest solution has always been don't buy games you aren't sure about. Don't buy them on day one. Then you have nothing to complain about.

Apart from better graphics, SimCity hasn't been all that great since SC2K.

Seriously.

Because it's not a multi-player only game, which would make logical sense to have an always-on connection if it were. EA requires that the game always be connected online, even for a player to play in the region as single-player. Beta testers sent EA a flurry of feedback stating that there were problems with the always-on DRM (not to be confused with a true multi-player mode), but EA clearly ignored the feedback and proceeded as schemed. The result: a game that they had to trim down by removing features/effects to try and help alleviate the server connection problems, but didn't do a damn bit of good.

$60-80 for a game that I'd consider Alpha stage/early Beta that is watered down from what was supposed to be released, and EA is not targeting the real problem that could/should be easily fixed = not providing the product as intended for the price paid.

If calling EA out on this obvious ripoff is being petty and juvenile, then why not charge $100, $200, or even $500 for it, since it shouldn't matter anyway and customers need to just STFU and enjoy what was delivered, right?

I saw all the issues with sim city and stay far far away. Sim City 2000 unlimited is the best one to date.

not wasting 59$ of my hard earned cash to play that crap, or deal with its issues. Shame I was looking forward to it.

I think you missed the point that the always-on DRM is one of the main reasons the game is broken. If a company wants to require people to log into a server to play a single player game, OK. Sure, it is stupid, but it is their game, they can do what they want. But, if that company is going to do this, they need to make sure the servers actually work and that people can actually log on to play the game. If not, then the buyer has every right to complain.

Meanwhile, EA's CEO steps down....

I don't have sympathy for those who bought the game. These things were announced before the game came out (nearly a year ago http://kotaku.com/5915377/like-diablo-iii-sim-city-will-require-an-online-connection).Also to think EA, which is a terribly run company full of short sightedness and other major problems, would have been able to pull of a successful launch when even Blizzard a company that is much more entrenched in always online content could not with D3. Stop supporting EA through purchasing or pirating. If you give them money of course they will keep doing it, but if they don't get it then they have incentives to change.

"Where does this entitlement mentality come from?"

What a jackass. Gee, I don't know, usually when I purchase something I expect it to work. I hope the next vehicle this guy purchases falls apart the day after he drives it off the lot.

I'm sorry for everyone who bought SimCity and got screwed, hell I'm pissed too not because of them getting the screw job but because I wanted an awesome game to continue in the long tradition SimCity games.

But I've long since quit buying games when they're released, or hell even shortly after them being released. See I got screwed with Master of Orion 3, no need to go into detail but following up one of the best 4x games with whatever the fuck that was soured the shit out of me for good. However it has also saved me lots of money in the mean time, just to name a few Sword of the Stars 2... yikes dodged a bullet on what was some awesome trailers, however even today even though most of the game killing bugs are gone there's still at least one thing that kills the game and that's the entire game itself with it's "Admiral" system which is a fuck in the ass for killing it's fun aspect (sorry Kerberos.. not even on a $4.99 steam sale...). Then there's Blizzard... oh not what you think with Diablo 3, I had a major hard on for that until I found out it would have always on connection, that broke it for, but I'm talking about Starcraft 2, the fact that you tie the game to a B-net account makes the game useless on the secondary market, they essentially killed GameStop from reselling it and more important me from reselling it, being as I am ONLY interested in for the single player aspect I fully expect the right to resell the game when I get done with it. GTA:SA, bought that right when it came out (however it was out for a long time on consoles so I wasn't exactly breaking my rules), a couple weeks later I was thoroughly finished with it, sold it on eBay for like $7 less than I paid for it, awesome deal, can't do that with SC2...

Bottom line, I'm not being petty and juvenile, I fully expect game makers to royally fuck up games that people absolutely "must" have... as a result neaner neaner poo poo, you're not getting my cash.

Word. And, because of his article expressing his viewpoint, he has to be satisfied when the dealership compensates him with a banana seat bicycle instead of fixing his vehicle. :D

Precisely. I am so glad I didn't pick it up.

+1 When you purchase a product it is not "entitlement" to expect the product to WORK. I wouldn't piss on this journalist if he was on fire.

It was almost just as bad when Diablo3 released. I was so disappointed in it I uninstalled and have been back playing D2 ever since. I wish I never bought Diablo3 and I have no intention of buying anything Blizzard ever makes again.

D2 was the last title they made that I enjoyed.

I don't think you realize who SimCity's targeted audience is. Very few people are going to visit a random site to get information on the new installment of a "game" they have grown up with. Many expected it to be just like every other SC release before it. The same core game play with updated graphics, some new features, but mostly that old familiar feeling they have enjoyed in every previous version.

The thing I don't get is the author suggesting you have to be a conspiracy theorist to be antigovernment.

I skipped most of the article to see this:

"Didn’t we just go through this with Mass Effect 3? Where does this entitlement mentality come from?"

And stopped caring about the article:

1. Mass effect 3 worked. SimCity Didn't - for a week, for just about everyone.
2. Mass effect 3's "problem" was the ending... not gameplay but it's story. SimCity gameplay is flawed (Pathing, Number bugs)
3. SimCity had elements disabled during this time (which haven't been patched back in, too). Mass Effect 3 Gameplay hasn't been touched.

An entitlement is a guarantee of access to benefits based on established rights or by legislation. A "right" is itself an entitlement associated with a moral or social principle, such that an "entitlement" is a provision made in accordance with legal framework of a society.

Bad "journalism".

Fuck you EA never buying a game from you again last game was BF3 that tore the toilet paper out from under me.

Ya learned my lesson with BF3 . My buddies have SC and they regret it and told me to wait a few months. I wont be buying the game any time soon if ever.

They are't different standards. Promising something and failing to deliver is just that. In art terms they were selling a Rembrandt and then delivered a scribbling done in crayons.

Pretty much, it's like paying for a porsche but getting a yugo with a porsche badge.

I guess that idiot missed the small tiny problem with the sim engine being entirely broken and making the game pointless to play after roughly an hour.

Oh no .. no , no and no. Simcity has been worse. Blizzard has most issues cleared up pretty fast (outside of not having the RLAH ready to go) and didn't act as utterly uncaring about complaints either. Blizzard doesn't threaten to ban your account if you attempt to add that you'll be considering any kind of legal action either , I remember some people considering this. I've dealt with Blizzard's support team and they are far more civil and understand than EA's version of support.

As much as I dislike some of Blizzard's practices of late , they are not EA. At least Blizzard makes good games WORTH playing unlike EA's micro-transaction crap that isn't worth the fly's on its own shit. Also when a Blizzard game has launch day issues , they don't turn off over half the in game features to keep the few thousand players online and able to play ..happy.

Not that I believe it will ever happen, but it would be nice if everyone protested the next big EA game for the first week of its release. It would be a really nice middle finger and might be a good wake up call.

Or the next time they release an online only game for what should be offline single player, we can all protest until they fix it.

But until then you can give them your money, whine about how your game is broken (while they still have your money), and then give them more money the next time they release a game.

Oh, and don't forget to buy all the DLC. I'm sure they'll love to have your $700 for The Sims and all the crappy expansions.

I'll just be here protesting alone until then.

Dear Illogical Person,

We are deeply sorry to have upset you with our desire to receive what some people have paid for. In order to restore your faith in us to mindlessly buy stuff without ever actually receiving it we have put together a product for you.

It's called Always-On-Dildo and it's awesome. Maybe you've heard of it. It costs only $59.99 and for a limited time Amazon will sell it to you. It looks like this:

dildo-78_600_zps56ce6a76.jpg

We promise if you put that up your butt you will feel hours of pleasure (or at least we are marketing it that way) . Except there's one thing. You are not "entitled" to receive our awesome product in the same state as promised. When you get home it could be this:

TS-BARSPKCLUB_2501_zpsd8f01902.jpg

Now we said "could be". There's a 50/50 % chance that when you get home you'll be able to "get off". But then again you knew what you were buying from the get go. Didn't you?

In case you get home to use our product and instead of joy you feel pain, please call our Customer Care Center. Unfortunately due to unanticipated demand (I mean could foresee tons of people buying that, right?) we can't / won't offer you this:

But instead we will give you this:

Or if you are bleeding profusely probably this:

Either way I'm sure you'll understand where we are coming from and not deny capitalism your hard earned money.

Sincerely,
