I need an external HDD and I'm sick of having to use a power brick, but 2.5" HDD's only go up to 2TB.

Anyone see 3TB versions on the horizon?

Requirements? USB? Other connection type? 3 TB, no power brick. Do you really care about size or just the power brick?

Afaik there are no 3TB slimmies yet. Maybe there are enclosures around that can hold 2 2.5" disks, but you'll need an extra USB header for the power for sure.

(Or buy 2 2TB ones and glue them together, strap the cables together et voila: DIY ghetto 4TB).

You'll see a 2,5" 3TB after you'll see a 3,5" 5 or even 6TB.

Yes, but a single 2TB 2.5" costs almost as much as a 4TB 3.5". I can't afford to buy two of these. I was thinking 3TB is a nice middle ground.

The current 2TB 2.5" disk will not fit in pretty much any laptop or external enclosure just so you know.

A nice middle ground between what and what ? Why do you think it costs that much ? It's the newest tech, and not even in a laptop form factor (9,5mm) but in a 3 platters form (12,5mm).

The innovation has been out for some time. Ever since the Samsung M8 1TB notebook drive, there has been no new developments on this front. The maximum 2,5" platter capacity is still 500GB, despite Samsung's plans to develop 1TB platters for 2,5" drives.

There is a WD notebook drive with 2TB. But this is nothing more than an ugly 4-platter drive with 500GB platters; not a 2-platter 1000GB drive which we are waiting for. 2 platters will mean the height of a notebook drive can fit in 9,5mm - the standard height of many laptops.

drgnfang : my bad, 2,5" HDDs aren't exactly on my radar.

sub.mesa : well there are still 800GB 3,5" platters being manufactured for high capacity 3,5" drives so you won't see a 1TB 2,5" platter in a long time ! Like I said, not before there is a 5TB 3,5" (end of this year, next year), more likely not before a 6TB 3,5".

Samsung was already developing 1TB platters for 2,5" devices after they developed 1TB platters for 3,5" disks and demonstrated those some years ago before Seagate acquired them. 1TB platter is standard for 3,5" today but its introduction was stalled. The current top series of seagate/hitachi/wd have 1TB platters, but it should have been 1333GB platters if innovation did not slow down past couple of years.

800GB platters today is rather conservative. for example, some 4TB disks are made with 5 times 800GB; which is very conservative as a 4 platter 1000GB drive is much more logical to achieve 4TB with higher speeds and lower power consumption.
