DVI-I is DVI-D, but with analog channels. The actual video signal in DVI is essentially identical to the one in DisplayPort. Therefore DVI-I = DVI-D = DisplayPort for display purposes.

Your monitor may have different default color profiles for DVI vs DisplayPort, but that's the monitor and not the connector affecting it.

So why on earth did they bother invent Display port then? After we use DVI for all these years?

Becuase DVI has been industry association abandonware for over a decade. No one has bothered to maintain it, unlike HDMI. And DisplayPort is royalty free to implement and has far more bandwidth to start with.

The committee overseeing DVI disbanded in 2001 IIRC. No further improvements will be made to it, it is dead - although it has lasted a very long time. Once we get the 4k resolution I don't believe anyone will be using it still, displayport 1.2 is better in literally every way.

Displayport in the coming years will be used more widely - it is better than DVI-DL. DP 1.2 supports higher bandwidth, and additional features that DVI does not - it also supports 4k resolution @ 60hz on a single cord, unlike DVI-DL which requires two DVI-DL cables for proper 4k resolution at 60hz. Displayport is a changing standard overseen by the VESA association, so it will adapt whereas DVI will not - it is abandonware as the above poster mentioned.

I prefer DP over DVI because it is much simpler to use, IME. No screwing in, smaller connector, etc.

Intel and AMD and others declared in 2010 they would deprecate DVI on their hardware starting around 2014-2015 IIRC....and replace the aging VGA and DVI connectors with DP and HDMI.

DisplayPort is not compatible with DVI/HDMI. It is just built into the spec that some DisplayPort output devices (nearly all DP on computers) can fall back to DVI if needed. So what you are wanting to do with the DVI->DP cable is not possible unless you buy an active converter (usually cost like $100). You should just try 2x Dual Link DVI cables. Some graphics cards nowadays only has 1x Dual Link DVI output so pray that yours does have 2x.

too bad only the high end video card has display port on it, I wonder how long do I have to wait?
