We need more CEOs that think like this guy.

"I don’t know, I really don't know. We have no real plans for DLC. It’s not really our thing. I'm still a gamer who believes in a beginning, middle and end. "I had big fights with my publisher guys who were like ‘you have to go free-to-play, you have to do microtransactions, DLC blah blah …f*** that sh*t."

Well hell, I may have to check their stuff out. That is a very refreshing attitude in today's gaming biz.

I like people that aren't contstrained by the anality of the general populace.

..until his company gets bought out. In which case, he'll be forced to obey or get fired. It's the fact of life with any small (and usually cool) studio. One of the mega conglomerates will gut them.

Larian would dissolve rather than be bought out if things got rocky. They are banking on the 2 games they are currently developing to keep them independant. IMO, Original Sin looks like it will be a really good game. I haven't been following Dragon Commander that closely, but it sounds quite innovative.

They made enough with Div2 and DKS to be able to self publish their next game.

I almost just bought every steam larian game just because of this guy. What a winner.

I like this primarily because of your name.

Good, good. Now all we need such studios making fast paced shooters. I'll buy them.

And I'd reply with even bigger fuck you, rpg is for suckers with no skills :)

The biggest detriment to game marketing, is game marketers.

Blizzard drank coolaid from the same bottle and look how that failure Diablo3 turned out. I deleted within a week of loading it I was so disappointed.

Need all that other stuff they say, BS, what's on my waiting list right now is Metro: Last Light. A straight old plain jane well done Adventure/Shooter, and I still love them.

DLC and microtransactions are a result of the industry not wanting to change. They got so used to the idea of pumping mediocre games out every 2 - 3 years that they refuse to change this. Game developers have to stand on the shoulders of giants, if they want to make successful games.

First they increased the price of the games to $60 from $50, and it's now industry standard. Instead they want to nickle and dime their customers. Straighten your shit out or people will go buy games from older consoles. There's plenty of AAA quality games sitting in older consoles that are dirt cheap right now, that people of this generation haven't played.

Game companies are too concerned with keeping that $60 price tag, and even want to move everyone into a centralized online gaming system. to encapsulate them in this price. DLC and microtransactions just further enforce this. If you can't make a Skyrim quality like game then you should get a job picking up my garbage.

Unfortunately, CEO's like this a rare because they don't last too long in the business world. It's a shame.

I think he has being doing fine for himself. The same approach has worked astoundingly well for CDProjekt too.

Are we sure this article is not from 1998. I remember when most games came with a level editor and we could set up our own servers for multiplayer. Also we were able to buy full games the day they came out (ie we did not pay $60 for a game that only has 5 maps and then had to wait a few days for a $20 DLC that included more maps that should have been included in the first place).

I remember when games didn't really have an end. They just get harder and harder until you die. ;)

I never heard of Divinity II before but I bought the game right now on steam at full price to support him. The game got great reviews, cant believe it miss my radar.

Only problem is how they handle expansions.

Instead of releasing DLC they just release an updated game with the original and expansion and make you pay full retail price for it again.

Divinity II is an action role-playing game developed by Larian Studios. Its first release in 2009 was titled Ego Draconis, and was published by dtp entertainment and in the United States by cdv Entertainment.[3] The updated 2011 rerelease The Dragon Knight Saga which included the expansion Flames of Vengeance, as well as the final 2012 release as Divinity II: Developer's Cut, were published by Focus Home Entertainment.

Personally I'd prefer DLC to re-buying a game twice!

It's a little rough around the edges but it's a very good game if you can look past the flaws.

It's nice to see a studio head that seems to care more about the games than maximizing profit, I'll definitely keep an eye out for future Larian games.

I'm thinking about getting some of their games based on that fact alone. DLC pisses me off. It's a horrible trend and it needs to die.
