Western Digital RED 3TB (WD30EFRX) $140 @ NCIXUS

Damn.. Wish I could afford 6 of these.. Would make for a nice upgrade to my whs box

Probably good time to ask, but how is NCIX's shipping of hard drives?

Foam/inserts or bubble wrap a la Egg?

NCIX's packing is fantastic. They used thick bubbles but it was packed with love and care. I bought 4 Red 3 TB drives last year.

Not a killer deal, but good to see NCIX with better prices lately. Love their Youtube vids and no tax in California

It's always amusing to see user reviews giving a SATA drive low points for not being reliable in RAID. Having said that, this looks like a good deal!

This is the lowest this drive has been in a month and last time it was cheap I don't think it was this cheap either. Last week Amazon/Newegg had it for $150, but it's back to $163 now.

This is a great deal for this particular drive, just not that great a deal for a 3TB drive in general if you don't need this specific model. ;)

Why would I go for this over the cheaper Seagate 3TB which is a 7200rpm vs this 5400?
Reliability?
thanks

This drive is built for NAS setups. Basically it's designed to be used continuously.

Thanks for the post, exactly what I needed though limit of 2 kinda hurt :p

The deal was $160 - $20 = $140. They also have a weekly deal for $160 - $10 = $150.

I've caught 2 of their $140 deals and each time bought the maximum limit of 2.

Sold out. Damn.
They aren't sold out. They just did a bait and switch to get traffic to their shop.

Actually no, they really did sell out. There was a note when I bought it that there were only 11 drives left at the price so it seems like their surprise deals are woot-like in that they have a limited quantity. The note even stated that the overall stock query did not indicate how many were available at the current price. Seemed like they were fairly straight forward with what the sale was.

just check their website regularly and you'll get it for $140. I bought one a few months ago for the same price.

Says WD. The Seagate 3TB works just fine in NAS setups as well - Netflix certainly likes them in their backblaze pods.

Its marketing/psychological contentment that WD is selling here with the Reds over something like a ST3000DM001 - in terms of what they claim its "designed for", given any manufacturer can claim anything in the absence of any independent body that could create these designations, sorry to break the news.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of them turning on TLER and then marketing them as "designed for NAS". On the flip side in very general terms I prefer WD over Seagate.

I was going to reply earlier to the comment but I figured they were trying to avoid a long explanation of TLER and just summed it up with WD's marketing words :)

Thanks for this info. I just built a windows home server and was already suckered into buying one WD Red ("It's specifically designed for NAS so it must be better!") before I started asking questions.

That said, while the Seagate is about $20 cheaper the warranty on the WD Red is an extra year so maybe that's worth it.

No reason to feel suckered, WD Red is a decent drive. Just pointing out people might want to be careful putting too much faith into marketing bulletpoints.

As for Seagate having less warranty thats definitely a factor to weigh versus the Reds, esp when you're buying 1-5 drives. However for anyone buying saying 16, 20, 24 or more drives then there's math that works out in favor of buying the cheaper drive with less warranty and using the saved money for cold spares to do your own RMA's. But that's a whole 'nuther discussion. Regardless Newegg will let you add 3 years to the warranty for $16 so something to consider for when the Seagates go on sale there.

There's also a pretty lengthy WD Red thread in the SSD & Data Storage forum you guys may want to check out, a lot of info to be found there. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1704476

Meh, Seagate and WD are both hyping things up if they're selling SATA for use in RAID. SAS all the way.

Sounds about as feasible as using all SSDs for a 4TB+ HTPC. SAS, while great, is expensive as hell compared to SATA.

Same shit as dealers offering insane prices for vehicles in the paper, then to note that they only have 1 in stock at this price. It's a lame trick to get publicity.

For Enterprise, sure. But people storing movies at home don't need SAS, and SATA works just fine in RAID.

Just over $150 shipped with taxes. Not really a fan of taxes, would wish TD would have a deal on this drive for once. I need the space so bit.

Thanks Mav for the heads up.
