Os will be whs 2011. I have the stock firmware on the 1015 and no extra key thing for it currently.

So what would be the best raid to run with the card, or would I be better off getting the dongle so I can run raid 5. I also wouldn't be to upset changing to a rocketraid 2230 I think it is so that I can use sata cables instead of the sas breakout since this is going to be in a mitx so I only need about 10" of cable length for the farthest drive..

So what say you masters of the storage forum?

Well, what's your objective? Maximum performance? Maximum usable storage? Maximum redundancy?

I'm looking for some redundancy and more usable storage then drive pool.. Faster is just a bonus.

So all parts are sitting here, but still not sure what to do about the raid or what card I should use/get..

The M1015 is not good for RAID5, even with the key it has no memory and no battery. There is the M5015 for that.

Don't buy a raid card. Look into drive pooling software (flexraid, stablebit) Have a full backup on another server or drive(s).

Alternativelty, look into linux software RAID or zfs.

Your drives aren't suitable for any hardware RAID and will cause you headaches if you try and use them such.

Well you should run nas4free or freenas and flash the card to it mode and run zfs or sw raid5. If you need whs2011 environment for certain apps consider esxi 5.1 and have the m1015 assigned to the nas4free/freenas virtual system
