System Shock 2 on GoG.com 2/14/13

Epic. People have been begging for this since the inception of GoG.

I have the retail disc version but you better believe I'll be giving them my money for this.

I too have the original game in the box and it is still one of my all-time favorite gaming experiences. Grab a couple of friends and have fun!

SS2 is one of my all-time favorite games - thanks for posting!

One question though - have there been any user created mods/texture packs/etc for this game? Would love to play it again with better visuals than the original release...

Thanks! I hadn't seen this yet. Definitely at the top of my classics I've never played list.

Actually $10 is an excellent price because A) few games have matched its quality and B) if you did manage to find a used copy on eBay or Amazon it went for big bucks.

But I suspect anyone who really wants to play this has already pirated it and will want to pay as little as possible since they already "own" the game. Though there might be a few people who haven't played it (or haven't played it in a long time) and also haven't pirated it but just want to wait for the inevitable sale. Nothing wrong with that I guess, but with the effort that went into making this game available I think it's worth every penny of the $10. This game is in the Top 5 Games of All Time list for many people. Anyone who won't pay $10 for this but is happy to pay $60 for the unoriginal trash known as Call of Honor Medal of Warfare Extreme Edition #34 is an idiot.

Everyone on this forum has paid more for far worse games - I guarantee it.

Yeah, I played it a long time ago and, even with the Rebirth mod the graphics are still pretty painful, IMO. It's a good mod but the game itself is just massively old.

Not saying it's a bad game, just saying I can't bring myself to pay $10 for it.

they should make the game available for free like Black Mesa...the game is 14 years old...yes it's a classic but $10 does seem a bit overpriced

Black mesa is 100% fan made remake. Half life still costs money that's a poor example.

It would have been highly illegal for the Black Mesa team to charge for it.

I have seen people talking about this game for years but I never hear anything about the first game.

and 10 bucks may not be great for an old game but that is cheaper than I have ever seen it go for.

I played the first game, can't remember a damn thing about it though.

I might just see if there is a gameplay video on youtube for the first game. I will certainly pick up the SS 2 when it is on sale though. was there a date listed for Steam release?

I wonder for how long as I skimmed the article and it says “System Shock franchise to resurface with GOG/Steam release”.

The RPS article says it's exclusive to GOG at the beginning of it and that's about it.

What's wrong with just downloading it from any one of the multiple sources online? It's a 14 year old game and the discs are collector's items. Should we still be paying the descendents of Goethe to read Faust? Seems to me that GoG is exploiting people at this price.

Yea, I can't believe I have to pay to download a Led Zeppelin album too. Their music must be 45 years old and thus the artist is undeserving of compensation for their creation.

OK so maybe I should re=phrase it...they should release the game on GOG/Steam with completely remade textures or a High-Res pack and charge $9.99...charging $9.99 for the game 'as-is' is a bit of a head scratcher...nostalgia is great but when you can get new games for sale on Steam for that price or lower it makes it harder to swallow

Then don't buy it. Quite simple, really.

Because it's illegal to pirate software? Fun fact: There is no such thing as abaondonware. No game is old enough to lose it's copywrite. People went through a ton of effort to get the rights to System Shock 2 and allow people to LEGALLY have it again for a price that isn't insane. GOG used to be completely about games like this, games that were hard to impossible to find via legal matters and offering them DRM free with a bunch of extras.

Why? Also, it's not just "as-is". SS2 is a notorious pain in the ass on modern computers. Even installing it could take a ton of work, much less getting it to play correctly. Night Dive had to fix all of those issues after it had spent quite likely considerable time and effort (possibly considerable money too) just getting the rights to do anything with the game. On top of the work simply to make it function properly on current systems they also made sure all the mods still worked with the game.

SENSE, people!! Stop trying to make it!! In the PC world, logic and reason go out the window the minute people have to pay more than $5 for a game that's older than a few months.

The fact is, yeah you can pick up newer games for less than $10 but few of them will be as good as SS2. This game has a huge following for a reason...though if you're experiencing it for the first time in 2013 or didn't grow up with pre-DOOM 3 graphics then you probably won't think it's as fantastic as the thousands of people who are elated to see this finally come to see the light of day.

I rather support this game with my $10 than most of what is released nowadays. Look at it as a vote, more people who support great games get great games. More people who throw even more money at Generic Military Shooter XXIII are sure to get more of the same.

The $ speaks louder than your internet whining.

I'll hazard to guess that near zero of the proceeds of this sale will go to the Irrational/TTLG devs.
The stooges at EA and whatever legal parasites who inherited the rights will clean up of course.

Led Zep might be going into public domain soon too if the owners (as an industry, not specifically LZ) hadn't paid to keep the laws changed every few years to extend copyright.

GoG has a price cadence not unlike a new game.

A popular one can start at $10, go on sail periodically for $5 or $6, the price lowered to $6 and go on sale for $3, etc...

Thanks. I bought it again because this copy doesn't make me hunt down workarounds to get it to run on my system.

One of the best games in history, right up there with Thief, Hitman, Beneath a Steel Sky, and Baldur's Gate for me.

Even if this game were on steam, I'd still buy it on GOG because
1. No DRM
2. Extras (soundtrack, making of, etc)

But steam makes games better... havent you heard !..

+1 GoG.

Actually, the music industry had very little to do with all the copywrite extensions. It was mostly Disney throwing money around so they can keep Mickey Mouse out of the public domain. Every time it got close to when the character would go public domain they lobbied to get the time extended.

As for who is getting the money for SS2 most of it probably goes to Night Dive, since they purchased the rights to rerelease it. Though it could still be split between EA and the holding company that owns the IP as well.
