Traveling across the border any time soon? It would probably be a good idea to leave your electronic devices at home...unless you want them confiscated.

The Department of Homeland Security’s civil rights watchdog has concluded that travelers along the nation’s borders may have their electronics seized and the contents of those devices examined for any reason whatsoever — all in the name of national security. “We also conclude that imposing a requirement that officers have reasonable suspicion in order to conduct a border search of an electronic device would be operationally harmful without concomitant civil rights/civil liberties benefits,” the executive summary said.

If you were a terrorist and had to bring in some data into the states, would you A. bring it along with you for border security to look at? or B. Encrypt it and send it over the interwebz?

Wow..this will likely burn me soon. I go across the border rather frequently and my cell and laptop are encrypted. Chances of me giving them access on a random search? Absolute Zero.

positive note! I did not have any travel plans to the United States.

America. You used to be the land of the free! What happened?

Anyway I just need to remember to tell TrueCrypt to hide my hentai partition.

Sorry guys with this Prez it's just going to get worse and people wailed about Bush and privacy.

"Fourth-Amendment-Free Zone stretches 100 miles inland from the nation’s actual border." - Seriously?

The border has always been an exception. Since our government can't do anything legally anymore, as it would cause too much bad press, they just reinterpret everything to mean whatever they want it to.

In this case, they interpret the border to be a 100 mile wide zone.

Sit back, open a cold beer, snack on some popcorn, and watch the most documented fall of an empire in human history. For the next thousand years they will be researching and arguing over the main causes of our national implosion. We will become an abject lesson on how NOT to rule the world.

Wish you were wrong but atm it sure feels like, "When in Rome....."

What does the gov know that we don't? Something else must be going on. This shit will not catch anyone even semi-conscious.

The title. At first I thought it said, "Electronic devices that cause people to have seizures are okay if we think they are baseless accusations."

You should put lots of gay porn with border guards on your iPad, when you go through.:D

Seems we're meeting China halfway as time goes on.

I totally agree. How much longer will it be until we are making cheap shit for them, while making next to nothing in wages? Not long I'd say.

Awaiting shit storm, because if there's one thing Americans do like, it's standing up to complain when their rights are being violated.

That might not work as planned, considering those guys voluntarily took a job that primarily involves feeling dudes up.

By the time I am an old man, these United States will have become a completely paranoid totalitarian dictatorship.

What are you? 70? Cuz it'll be there in like a year.

Long live the Fourth Reich.

Now that the Nazi's have figured out how to utilize technology they will be unstoppable.

Liberties lost, never gained. All destroyed, in under two and a half centuries. The forefathers would roll in their fucking graves if they knew the extent that the Constitution has been scrapped and misinterpreted, even to the point of debating known meanings of obvious words.

Question, "Where do our rights originate?"

People in American vote according to the letter next to a candidate's name, (R) or (D).

(Retards) or (Dumbasses).

The one presidential candidate who would have shaken things up was ridiculed and discredited.

Conclusions,

1)A ponderous percentage of Americans depend on the government for employment, or social benefits. They have no desire to bite the hand that feeds and clothes them at someone else's expense.

2)American politics is like professional sports. People blindly support the valance.

3)The average American wants to live a carefree, child like life, with as little responsibility as possible, sheltered by the government auto pilot.

4)The two party system is two hands of the same beast. Their differences are calculated to maintain control of the country like two distinct sheep dogs, one on the left, one of the right. The course meanders left and right, but the true and unseen path is followed.

5)Corporations and their lobbyists own Congress.

6)Once created, government agencies fight tooth and nail to ensure their own job legacy.

7)Americans, and I'm one, are a bunch of fucking pussies that the forefathers would be completely ashamed of.

8)American law enforcement upper management is highly politicized. In virtually every city, and every town, the chief's and directors are appointed by seating politicians and are thus an extension of political policies.

"Everything in existence follows the path of least resistance, available."

If history teaches us anything it is that everything has an end. The USA's golden age has long passed but they don't seem to notice. Just keeping turning up that temp on the stove til it boils slowly.

Papers please. Do you have your papers please. I will only ask nicely this once. There is no doubt of the turn the powers that be want this nation to go. Very restricted travel, no more cash, indebted to the gills, frightened. The good sheeple of amerika should quietly consume, or die if you cannot.

We in Australia are in a similar position - the fact we sell our resources to countries in Asia, who then value-add and sell it back to us @a huge profit is alarming, given the trend here, as in the US of closing manufacturing and turning into a services based economy. I fear for both our countries futures, when tied to others as we are now. Our leaders need to divert money into huge capital works programs that can eventually return profits - our snowy river and your hoover dam cannot be replicated but their example is still relevant, given the population shifts and increases in the past 20yrs. I'm not sure about the US, but the housing boom here created large outer city areas which are vastly under serviced and underfunded - maybe middle america/australia can be the catalysts again for our recoveries..gl over there, the US is still the greatest power around, hopefully that will translate into a new brighter future...

what do you think of the recent anti-gun events? Just curious what an honest opinion would be on that..

Lol. Seriously? Do you even know what goes on in china? Wages are so low in the us though, like omg I can't buy tons of extra shit I don't need!

I know it wasn't directed to me, but considering it's yet another law that excludes congressmen, they all probably want it. Less weapons in the public, less chance of them getting killed for the stupid shit they pull.

Sad that the idiots going around doing stupid shit like killing kids, aren't even making an attempt on these assholes lives.

At which point the RIAA will have "their" police force put you into custody until you can verify you own a license for all of said gay porn, otherwise you are worse than a terrorist, you homopirate, you!

I blame these sort of policies on Rhino's and Liberals. We need more Rand Pauls and libertarians in this word. People that value our freedom and take the constitution seriously.

I have had airport security try to search my laptop and external HDD's before. I travel with them encrypted and FDE on my laptop. I refused to unlock them and the only thing they could do at the time was ensure they power on. I don't know if that is still true, but I would throw down on a good lawyer if they made the attempt again. I did miss my flight though.

I think you mean RINO, but removal of rights in the name of "security" using the terrorist scapegoat seems to be the mainstream Republican policy now.

In fact, that seems to be the only thing the Republican and Democrat party can both now agree on, that war is profitable for their big campaign contributors, Israel's bidding must be done, and that the American people have too many freedoms.

And yes, more libertarians is the solution, but in this "winner takes all" system, I don't see them being able to take on either party.

The type of criminal that commits gun crimes doesn't give two shits about gun laws.
"Gun Free Zones" only disarm law abiding citizens.
The number of Americans who suffer gun violence is just over one tenth of one percent of all Americans.
Infringing the creator endowed and constitutionally guaranteed civil rights of a peaceful majority of Americans in a vain attempt to regulate the behavior of a sub minority of outliers is not a common sense measure.
US Government policy kills, and has killed, more people than civilian firearms ever will.
A subject becomes a free man the moment he picks up a rifle.
Nothing stops a bad guy with a gun faster than a good guy with a gun.
The Supreme Court has ruled that American law enforcement has no constitutional duty to protect any individual citizen, http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/politics/28scotus.html?_r=0
When seconds count during a defensive emergency the police can't come until someone calls them, and then the waiting begins.
I can't fit a cop in my pocket.

The right to self defense is endowed by our creator at birth, not afforded to us by a government.
Even the lowest forms of animal and insect life on the planet reserve the right to defend themselves and their offspring by utilizing the most effective means at their disposal. Firearms literally give David a chance to persevere against Goliath.
Some people don't want to accept any personal responsibility for their own self defense, what so ever.
Many of those same people don't want you to have the means to accept responsibility for your own self defense.

Non gunners do not understand how many people legally own and shoot black rifles for defense and recreation. They paint the picture of their owners as social outliers when the overwhelming statistical majority are peaceful, friendly, and law abiding citizens.

The policy of prohibition does not work. Black markets flourish and people are subjected to violence when the government creates by law or policy a black market.
Black marketeers do not use business contracts, they don't call lawyers to settle disputes. They do not call law enforcement to settle conflicts, they shoot it out.
The majority of firearms violence in the US and around the world is born from the US policy of drug prohibition, i.e. business and territory disputes.

When we value something it makes sense to protect it, whether that means guards or facility design. Most schools however, are soft targets. Children are our most valuable asset.

Magazine capacity bans are ineffective.

I don't think that the politicians truly understand the line they are talking about drawing in the sand. There will be many forms of backlash from previously law abiding citizens who respond negatively to their rights being stripped, many are not willing to accept another inch of infringement in a right that, "Shall not be infringed". I don't fucking blame them one bit.

I wish the media that wants to diminish the second amendment rights and the Natural Rights of Americans would suffer the infringement of their 1st amendment rights to an equal extent, just once.

I wish that the politicians who seek to diminish the second amendment rights of Americans be forced to give up their armed entourage, and their concealed carry permits.

I think that African Americans who do not support firearms ownership are misguided and foolish, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4n8egXfmJM and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaX3EM-fsc8

I think that Jewish Americans who do not support firearms ownership are misguided and foolish, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moee1WHGHa0

The conflict between government,

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.", Ayn Rand

and the citizen,

"better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer", Judge William Blackstone
