I've checked some articles discussing good melee combat in rpg games and someone mentioned Thief as an example where you can realistically parry with your sword as one of the few games where it actually works and feels natural. Do you know any other RPG game (preferably more recent) that has the best sword fighting in your opinion? I prefer first person games but third person view is ok as well.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

it is a decent game, with good combat 1st person.

This was the first game were i was actually scared of the spiders lol, took me about 45 min's to pass this one small part cause the spiders kept freaking me out.....I cant handle spiders in rl :p

Im sure you can get it cheap now days

Die by the Sword. There was never better a "sword sim" than this game. Everything else look pale and totally simple stuff.

You swing the sword with numpad, with every numeric button was move in different direction. You really could put awesome combo there.

Too bad that game is too old, and noone makes a remake of it. It would make Dark Souls or Demon Souls players scream "too hard, nerf it please" :)

It is a decent game. Reminds me of thief and skyrim blended together a bit.

If you want flashy sword fighting, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Its button mashing but the animations are awesome and the kick is a nice flavor.

If you want something that really does feel like REALISTIC sword fighting, Witcher 2. While obviously slightly exaggerated and fantasy oriented (not to mention health bars), you do have to approach combat like a real one (except on the easy difficulty where you can button mash to win). Balance with quick strikes and heavy slashes, dodge and parry, only face a couple of enemies at once while keeping others further than swords reach because if you get flanked or surrounded you are in the world of hurt...

Oblivion with the Deadly Reflex mod was always pretty cool. The mod's creator based it on Dark Messiah's combat.

Amazingly, I still haven't played Skyrim to compare its combat system to Oblivion with Deadly Reflex.

Dishonored's sword combat is not as good as Dark Messiah's, unfortunately.

I'll just echo what other posters have said already: Dark Souls, Dark Messiah, Witcher 2 and Mount and Blade all have different approaches to melee combat, but they all do it extremely well.

Mount and Blade With fire and Sword.

This is the ONLY game where how you swing actually matters because you control the angle and the type of swing. How far you rotate your torso will affect the angle of the swing. It's not just, push a button and you swing.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is not bad also, and it is not button mashing. This one is pretty good but is multiplayer only. Been playing it for a while now, pretty fun game. In fact its kind of similar to Dark Messiah.

Skyward Sword Zelda on a Wii Emulator (this is a PC forum)

Not an RPG but if you want brutal, bloody and frenetic melee combat, you can't go wrong with Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.

"Look, you stupid Bastard. You've got no arms left."
"Yes I have."
"Look!"
"It's just a flesh wound."

Noo, Warband! It has the best mods, annnd 250 player multiplayer...

The arena battles were a lotta fun.. Especially playing as an ogre. That giant club sent pretty much all enemies unceremoniously through the air, into a wall. The controls were much more fluid when using a joystick. Mouse & keyboard felt a little too clumsy.

Thanks guys. I have already played Witcher 2 and the combat was ok, but the fact that I could not go backwards when facing the enemy was weird.
I would like to try Dark Souls but I am not sure if I am patient enough for that game.
The Oblivion Dead Reflex mod looks good, now only if it was made for Skyrim as well.

This, but why use the numpad? Using the mouse was so much more fun.

yeah, I recall using the mouse to swing the sword... was frickin' hilarious at first because he looked drunk... ok, it's still funny as hell watching this game, with the ogres prancing about like ballerinas and arms flailing about aimlessly

Warband and Witcher 2 and Die by the Sword

Another vote for Warband. If you can master your blade control in the saddle, you are death on hooves!

Do you guys remember the one game with the actual medieval fighting? It was like a new type of Dynasty Warriors but way more intense with fighting. Instead of finger mashing, you would actually need combos to learn to fight through the hundreds....

But in the end... I am gonna have to go with Spartan Total Warrior for gamecube :) :) :)

Ah I just realized this was the PC section.Sorry!
Going to have to go with Skyrim
Havent played the other ones mentioned.

Another vote for Warband, but then again I haven't played all the games mentioned in this thread. I heard very high regard for Oblivion with Duke Patrick's mod. He has one for Skyrim too but haven't tried that either.

x10.

Severance has the BEST melee combat system of any game, still to this day.

It's better then DIe by the sword, Rune, Jedi Knight, Mount and Blade, Witcher I/II, and even Dark Souls/Demon souls.

It has the most in-depth combat system (moves that are dependent on your specific weapon + character) and also it actually REQUIRES you to actually watch your enemy, anticipate his combat moves and dodge/block them. It's not a game you can just "button mash" through.

Not only this, but it actualyl feels more natural then any other combat system, especialyl games like Jedi Knight that use a similar control scheme but require you to move the direction before mouse, which makes a stupid "ice skating" look to the combat, which SEverance thankfully avoids.

It's a shame that no other developer seems to have ever played this game, I for one think if every third person action adventure developer did, they'd be a lot more similar games to it.
