Asus VG248QE 144hz 3D Vision 2: The Official Thread

It will cost you more than that in return cost differences if you don't like it and you're going in blind. Doesn't NE charge 10% restock or something?

Nope.

If somethign is defective (including too much backlight bleed), there is no charge. I've never once paid a restocking fee to Newegg. :)

After doing the 30 day Amazon Trial membership I found out that I also had access to Amazon instant video. I was watching Star Trek Enterprise till 1 am last night. LoL

That's good I guess. I'm sure you could find something 'wrong' to avoid the restocking fee.

I suppose you could. I never have. When I return something its because I generally don't can't live with something about ti (like excessive backlight bleed).

So tempting to pre-order this at under $300, but I think I'll hold off until there are more reviews.

ordered one from amazon. i hope i dont get a bad screen ;( always a gamble with new monitors, oh wells.

I'm not quite sold yet. Zero-blur needs to be a supported feature that works independent of source. You should be able to hook anything up to one of these and get zero blur (consoles, blu-ray players, etc).

You shouldn't have had lcd blur and 60hz limit all those years too. Unfortunately what we wish for isn't what is available in display tech usually. Consoles don't even have more than 60hz and often low fps so I doubt they would even be capable of flicker free synchronized backlight strobing. Bluray players are also 60hz output or less since they are geared for tv which only has 60 hz input, and movies which up until recently have been filmed at low framerates. The monitor would have to add some kind of (likely input lag inducing) frame doubling(maybe even tripling or quadrupling on some games and films with very low fps) or something in order to get enough frames from generic low framerate and low hz output sources. Yuck.

In order for it to work from a pc it requires 100hz at 100fps+ or 120hz at 120fps+.

Lag free frame doubling of 60hz into 120hz is possible via the latest HDFury (not cheap tho).

The next-gen consoles will be capable of a solid 60fps.

With the DDC pin removed and using a manual switch box, the monitor could be fooled into thinking it is still connected to the same device. Enable LightBoost on the PC and switch to HDFury/Console and it may still be enabled.

I'd be interested in my replacing my 236he with this thing. The green tint on my 236he is annoying.

...Yep it would be nice if it worked off amd cards and next-gen consoles with a hdfury frame doubling you speak of . You didn't say next gen consoles with a hdfury in your original post though, you bascially said "consoles and bluray players", both of which have very low fps output and 60hz max output.
..Next gen consoles are reportedly going to use an amd 7850 equivalent or something too so assuming they are able to maintain 50 - 60 fps, it goes back to the amd thing again, and the fact that they will likely only support 60hz max output natively. Unfortunately wishing proprietary nvidia tech like physx and cuda and now lightboost2 would work independent of hardware is just wishing. It is what it is at this point, zero blur in 2D pc gaming as it is a side effect re-tasking of nvidia's lightboost2 3D tech in nvidia cards at 100hz&100fps+ , or 120hz&120fps+.
.
It would be great if all monitors developed very low response times, high hz output, aggressive response time compensation (RTC), and a synchronized 1ms backlight strobe... and it would be great if you could enable it independent* of gpu/signal source (*as long as the source was capable of maintaining high fps output of 100fps or higher and capable of outputting it at the equivalent high hz). It would also be great if nvidia's other proprietary techs like cuda weren't software locked to their gpus. It would be great if all devices and gpu's supported multiple monitors, PLP and fully custom monitor tiling in games.... that they all supported virtual monitor space assignment in middle of screen with all extents outside of it being additional FoV instead of making larger monitors/arrays just jumbo sized scenes.... etc.. This is all wishing though. I wish LCD's weren't released without addressing the horrible motion blur all these years as well. <shrug>. We finally have a few early (or very, very LATE depending how you look at it) options at crt motion clarity on gaming LCDs, and at a very reasonable price (gpu power considerations aside).

I called Amazon and they said they don't know when their shipment will be in :-/

That's why I never pre-order anything. lol

Pre-ordering this to lock in the price makes some sense if you expect the price to jump, or expect them to quickly sell out based on demand. I'm itching to jump in, myself, even with an unknown delivery date, but I really want to wait until more people have these in hand to see if there are any common issues with them.

But if you pre-order it now they don't take your money until they're going to ship it out, and you can cancel at any time if you see it available anywhere else.

^ shipped from amazon reseller (spicy bomb) or direct from amazon?

spicy...the only draw back might be they shipped it via Ontrac shipping not fed x or ups ,Im hoping for the best .

expected price of £320? Are they bloody mad?

£320 = $504
£320 - Tax = $421

USA price = $280

sigh and no thx

What a disappointing review... they dont even measure anything on the display??? Show it to me using a 1000fps camera running the light boost tweak at 144hz.

Mine shipped yesterday from Amazon ... not Spicy Bomb .... ill have all three setup tonight...ill post pics soon.

My 2 MSI 7970 Lightnings also showed up yesterday.

If there is anything you guys would like to see let me know.

So is it glossy or matte?

Wondering between this or the BenQ or Samsung 700D, would like a 24" more then 23" so only option or the asus or benq.

the 700d is supposed to have the best colors and picture quality out of the 3. That's based on mutilple reviews and comments I've seen. I've also read that the benq colors are not that great out of box but one you calibrate it, there are some preset profiles out there that you can load up, the picture quality gets alot better. Obviously not sure about the Asus yet. However the 700d also is alot harder to find and supposedly has higher input lag and doesn't support nvidia 3d, so you cannot use the lightboost 2 trick for zero montion blur gaming, which is the main reason I'm going to give this monitor a try.

Awesome! When did you order it? I hope mine is shipped soon :D

A review on the display
Lame review, imo; they clearly aren't gamers, they don't even say anything about the 144hz or compare it to other 120hz+ monitors.

EDIT: Now available on Newegg! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313&Tpk=ASUS VG248QE

Just ordered mine :D

The monitor is Matte.

Amazon told me the monitors shipped.... I get home today and only one of the 3 is here :-(

I'll post pics soon.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/24/pic5qh.jpg/ this is everything included in box. No displayport cable included. Which I'm going to Fry's right now to pickup.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/827/pic4uy.jpg/ sorry about the flash bouncing back off the monitor in this pic.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/233/pic3ij.jpg/ back of monitor. It has Vesa mounts.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/805/pic2zn.jpg/ side view of monitor to see how thick it is.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/839/pic1ed.jpg/ This thing can do portrait very easily. Takes about 3 seconds to go from landscape to portrait.

I'll test backlight bleed later tonight. I'm still bummed I only got one out of the three monitors and the other 2 say not shipped yet from Amazon :-(

Well I went to Frys to pick up a Mini Displayport to Displayport cable and they only had one in the whole store....Monster Brand ... LoL @ 89.99 so I bought it so I can test out the monitor tonight and tomorrow. I ordered 3 off of Monoprice with 2 day shipping for 40 bucks. I'm @ a family function all day today and ill hopefully get this thing fired up tonight.

Here's a review from Amazon from a buyer named Aaron:

Pros:
+144hz eliminates almost all motion blur in games.
If you have the computer to push them higher frames.
60hz vs 144hz is night and day.
+ I haven't noticed any input lag at all in various games.
+Price is right for this tech
+I love the adjustable stand
+Asus OSD is easy to navigate with good options to calibrate
+Very easy to fine tune using Spyder 4 elite
Negatives:
- Very poor luminance uniformity. Spyder 4 showed 35% difference on upper left sector.
- All 4 Asus monitors purchased in last 2 months all had stuck pixels. (Three pb278q returned with zero problems because Amazon is the best in the business)
-Major backlight bleed
-Worst colors out of box I have ever seen. Spyder 4 elite made this look half way decent.
-Asus claims 80000000:1 dynamic contrast and Spyder 4 says its 420:1 and colors look like it. My Samsung px2370 that is years old demolishes this panel on colors.

Most these problems point to quality control IMO. I won't buy another Asus monitor again.
Will update once I use this more. Wont even try to Rma this because i know the replacement will have more stuck pixels then the single green one I have in upper left corner.Last note Seller Spicy Bomb was awesome with awesome packaging and speedy shipping.

Oh gosh :(
For me As long as its similar to my Asus VE248H Black 24" I will be fine. Got me worried now though. Thanks Wolf549 for the heads up.

I'm really not good at reviews, but when mine gets here next week (Hopefully by Tuesday) I can do a quick side by side image quality comparison between my VE248H and the VG248QE.

He just added another Update: Went from 3/5 Stars to 4/5 Stars. This is what he added to the review.

UPDATE 1/26/2013:
All TN panels look bad to me after buying a Asus pb278q which is a pls panel with amazing colors, so I am probably being a bit harsh when I say the colors are bad. But 60hz is just too slow for fast gaming. Where this panel really shines is first person shooters, barely any motion blur. 144fps in Battlefield 3 has helped my aim so much it's not even funny. After playing at higher refresh rate, I cannot play on 60hz anymore, it looks terrible. Im raising this one star to 4/5 after gaming on it hardcore for last 24hrs. Would be 5/5 if not for the poor uniformity and stuck pixel. This panel will have to do tell the big companies make a 120hz IPS/PLS or Oled monitor but we wont see that in the near future because you would need so much graphic power to run 1440p at 120hz and get acceptable frames. My EVGA 690 cant even max out all eye candy in games like Farcy 3, Metro 2033, etc... and keep 120+fps constant on this vg248qe 1080p monitor.
