Note II slide-out menu

I'm having a tiny problem with my Note II which is extremely aggravating.

There is an optional slide-out menu that I believe is related to the S-Pen (but not sure) and I have no idea how to de-activate it. It's not there when the phone first boots up but something I end up doing during normal usage ends up inadvertently triggering the menu.

The real problem is that once the menu is there there is a little nub which is always there and always on-top of all other programs. Even when you are watching a fullscreen video, the nub is right there on the side sticking out like a sore thumb. I can move it to any side of the screen, and I can adjust what shortcuts show up in the menu, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to simply make the menu go away - except to reboot the phone.

long press the back button for two seconds or so, this will make the multiwidow mode tab you describe either go away or reappear. That should do the trick.

That's a temporary way to get rid of it. If you want to completely disable it, you can go to settings > display, then uncheck the "Multi window" box.

It's a cool feature though, IMO. I use it occasionally so I can browse the web, play games and watch some videos at the same time. I'm rooted though and have a mod that allows me to add any app I want to the multi-window menu and most of them act perfectly, so I wonder why Samsung didn't enable that by default instead of restricting you to a handful of apps.

Yeah I got the phone yesterday and noticed only like 8 apps can be used in multi. Wtf? Not even major ones like netflix, chrome, etc.
