AMD Catalyst 13.1 WHQL Now Available

  • Resolves a sporadic system hang encountered with a single AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series GPU seen on X58 and X79 chipsets.

I never had this issue on my X58 since I got these 7970s at day one. Lucky?

The amd clean uninstaller gave me a sound looped hard lock but after reboot it worked the second time.

I had to remove the 12.11 beta drivers cause some games would crash to black pinstrip screen when loading up certain games. I get a very faint flickering with my 6950 and notice that fan would rev up sometimes in 2D with the 12.10 drivers. I also would occasionally get a memory_management BSOD but tests in memtest86 and prime95 run fine so I am assuming its related to the ATI drivers. I still get the flickering after installing the 13.1 driver which I am assuming is the same as what others have reported. Haven't had the fan rev at all in 2D but the driver have only been on the system for 5 mins.

Thanks for the uninstall link. AMD's needs to redesign that website to make it easier to find something.

these drivers completely f*ck up my games I'm getting the freaking black borders all around the screen (again) can't even mess with the overscan/underscan settings since it won't let me  I swear this is the last time I buy ATI

Un installed 12.11 via control panel, used driver sweeper and installed 13.1 WHQL. No issues to comment on. Everything works fine.

tried out the 13.1 drivers -- still got the flickering/tearing at the desktop randomly sometimes. Goes away if the GPU is under load (say while bitcoin mining)

The LCD overdrive fix seems to have helped -- I still get small bits of random corruption sometimes at the windows desktop. (keep in mind this 7970 is 100% rock stable, no corruption or tearing at 1200Mhs if I'm using the 12.8 drivers.

The best unsung improvement I've seen so far: a per-application 3D settings tab that actually makes sense!

Yes! It's so beautiful. Missed it so much from when I had an Nvidia card. Yeah you could do it before on AMD cards, but it was kind of clunky. It's finally quick and easy to change settings for invidual games.

Haven't had any issues with the driver itself so far.

Any ideas why after this install my monitor no longer turns off after x number of minutes like it's always been doing prior to 13.1? I change absolutely nothing but this catalyst version.

try disabling screen saver and see if that fixes? I have mine disabled but monitors turn off after X mins.. works fine here.

Has anyone noticed any performance drop with 13.1 (compared to 12.11) when running 3D Mark 11.
My Perf graphics score which were about 10200 now barely cross 9900 and before someone says that this is one time, I've checked this atleast 10 times over the last couple of days.

using cat 13.1 legacy. Uses 10.6 driver supposedly and 13.1 cc ? ,installs properly at least.

I tried using the 13.1 last week on my new htpc based around a10-5800k. Using the onboard video, these drivers totally broke hdcp, uninstalled and went back to the latest betas and it all worked fine. I wonder if it's related to the hdmi audio mixup and has been corrected in the update or if it's still borked.

I'm not using that chip but my 7850 hasn't had a problem with hdcp. Maybe I'm using the new repacked version.

I swear -- AMD can suck a nut. I still had to revert back to 12.8 because for whatever reason I get tearing/corruption at the desktop in Win7 and Win8.

Stock Clocked or Overclocked -- doesn't matter.

Running a single MSI 7970 - and unless I use 12.8 drivers, I get random tearing or corruption just trying to surf the web or read email.

Did a full driver clean with their utility - and unless I use 12.8 I get the same problem. I love my 7970 for BF3 and some bitcoin action (Free electricity) but this is getting to the point where I might just have to go nvidia next round.

Was running win8 up until about a month ago - and got so many random video driver crashes despite using their latest and greatest (and putting up with the tearing)

So basically I can't use the OS i want to use because their drivers, and when I go back to Win7, I get massive corruption unless I use a very out dated driver.

Thanks AMD

I'm assuming you weren't playing the right games. Out of all the games that I've played with that combo the only ones that gave me issues were WoW in directx11 mode and shogun 2 with directx11 after some patches in directx11 mode. It was horribly frustrating.

I've tried to get this driver to work for the past 3 hours...It bricks my system. Win7 64bit, HD Radeon 6970 2GB

-Simple upgrade install?=BSOD before install complete & Brick of OS, have to Safe Mode Restore back to before install
-Uninstall old driver, then install 13.1?=BSOD before install complete & Brick, have to Safe Mode Restore back to before
-Disable SSD caching, uninstall old driver, then install 13.1=BSOD before install complete & Brick, have to Safe Mode Restore back to before
-Uninstall old driver, and kill all traces of it=Brick, have to Safe Mode Restore back to before

*With re-downloading of the installer about half-a-dozen times, and yes I grabbed the right installer each time

I've never had this kind of problem with an AMD/ATI driver before. So back to 12.4 Catalyst for me. WHQL release my hairy butt.

Anyone getting random crashed to a completely white screen after loading these? Well its not entirely random seems to occur mostly when I am browsing the web.

That seems so odd. I have two of the basic MSI 7970 cards and I don’t have any desktop artifacts. I have tested them with XP, 7 and 8 on my new X79 setup. What is the desktop tearing like? Can you post a video? Have you tried the 7970 in another system, used different display, cables, refresh rate or under clocked the GPU and RAM? Have you watched the GPU and RAM clocks while in and out of games and are they changing as they should?

It’s just so odd that we keep finding seemingly driver related issues that only a few other people have. I now, after 12.11 Beta 11, only have issues with Age of Empires Online. It has on screen corruption no mater the OS or driver. Even if I move one of the cards to another PC the artifacts are still there but I’ve found another person with a 7970 that says his works fine in Age. In my case there is no driver that works but I can play the game in a VMware session and then there are no artifacts. Driver or hardware or both???

To be honest I've already spent so much time troubleshooting it -- I'm just going to stick with my problem free 12.8 drivers. Maybe in a month or two I'll have free time to monkey with it some more.

I've tried new HDMI cables, DVI cables... I have another MSI 7970 in my media box system... granted all it does is occasional bitcoin and transcode media... it's on a headless setup in another room and I only ever remote into it when I need to do maintenance.

I really do love AMD - but it's crap like this that makes me consider going to the nvidia camp next time I upgrade. I understand there will always be issues with some things out there -- but when a company puts out consistantly crappy drivers for years - to the points it's a running joke in forums... you deserve to lose business.

I know how you feel and I’ve used both brands many times over the years and had problems with both. My friend I play games with just upgraded from 2 4XX NVidia cards to a single 5XX because of all the SLI and fan issues he was having. He has given up on the new release stuff and is staying a revision or so behind. At least after a year or so it’s cheaper and has most of the fixable stuff fixed. It just seems like you can’t win with electronics these days. You go down the list of all the cool features you’ll want to use with any given device and just hope that they are in the two thirds of the stuff that works or has not been grossly exaggerated. Yes, read some reviews but even you never seem to get the full story.

Still haven’t seen a story on a site like Toms about all the AMD 79XX issues with DX9 games and X58 / X79 motherboards and so on. Not even a year later when AMD say they fixed in the new driver release.

I found something new in this 13.1 driver by the way. I have two LCDs and two TVs hooked up through a HDMI receiver. With all the pervious drivers I could use profiles to switch to the TV only or the LCD display but now after watching a movie on the TV and trying to switch back to the LCDs the main LCD will be all garbled. One time I was able to toggle the profiles and get it back but mostly I have to reboot. This morning I got an ATI(something).sys blue screen when I tried to switch back to the LCDs. This was after a windows video driver stopped responding popup. Never had this happen before with the 7970s and any of the older drivers. I now some folks have had the video driver stopped responding popup but it’s a first for me on this new build.

Running nice and smooth with zero issues here. 2 7970's in crossfire in 3x1 Eyefinity. Loving the new application profiles setup page.

Tried installing the 13.2 driver today. Blue Screen after a few seconds on the desktop.
Tried installing 13.1 after that. Blue Screen after a few seconds on the desktop.

I am really getting tired of this crap. I have an MSI 6970 lightning and an ASUS 6950 (at 6970 specs) running in crossfire and I have nothing but trouble. Every time I uninstall old drivers to install the new ones I get a blue screen, forcing me to reboot in safe mode and remove all traces from the old driver.
Then I have to reboot again and install the new drivers. Then reboot again.

As if that isn't annoying enough, now even that results in a blue screen. Going to retry the 12.10 drivers now but frankly I should not be having this much trouble with this stuff.

If anyone knows what might be the problem I am all ears...

EDIT:

After deleting the driver yet again I now crash immediately at the password screen and can only boot up the PC in safe mode.

BCCode: 50
BCP1: FFFFF88005E680D5
BCP2: 0000000000000008
BCP3: FFFFF88005E680D5
BCP4: 0000000000000000

So here I am. Stuck without any drivers at all and only able to boot up in safe mode. I'm starting to wonder why the hell I even bothered. :(

EDIT 2:

The BSoD message keeps changing. One time it was HDAudBus.Sys, another time it was umbus.sys and then it was usbport.sys.
I'm getting the feeling these messages are wrong. Of course now I already uninstalled my Audio card drivers... This is just getting worse. :(

I seriously need help here.

EDIT 3:

Had to use system restore to roll back to the 12.10 drivers. These still seem to work at least.

Currently running Tri 7970s with these. So far they seem very smooth. I have not had too many driver issues since 12.10s really. With the 13.1s I get lower gpu usage compared to the 12.10s. For example, with 12.10s all 3 cards would be pegged at 98/99%. With the 13.1 drivers my usage is around 70ish% sometimes hitting the 90s. I figure the drivers are allowing for more efficient usage of the cards. I dont really see the "up to 30%" increase in BF3 though.

Anyone else running 3 or 4 cards? What are you seeing?

Running 13.1 on a new OS install as well; not one issue other than my cards won't OC thru CCC any more. Tried it 2 days ago and the app "failed" the OC test then my PCI-e bus#1 defaulted to x1!! Needless to say I knew the overclocking was the problem. Removed BOTH gpu's and posted board( I kinda know my mobo cycle enough to judge the post by the LCD display on my KB heheh~), powered off and replaced GPU's. Back to x16/x16 phew~

-- 2x5770 all good, yup :)

Any reason to update from 12.10(have 7950)? Only game I think that had any improvements that I play was Borderlands 2, and I don't really notice the stuttering that was being referred to.

Good question. I'd say if its working for you why change. I personally havent tried any other games yet with 13.1 but it seems the concensus is that they are working out well.

I see some users have stuttering issues and some dont. I guess it depends on the setup really, so many things in the same sandbox have to play nice.

Now when I get picky or "greedy" for more from AMD I stop and remind myself of when I use to get BSOD with new drivers and was running release drivers for a long, long time. ;)

Just got my 7970 yesterday and I am using the 13.2 beta 4 and boy all the games I have tried so far work perfectly. I dont have any issues to comment on and its a hell of a lot faster than my 5870.

Went from me trusty 12.9b's to this and wow huge boosts visually and performance based, however see below:

--All this worries me o_O!
Have a similar sytem pending assembly(yea had to rma the CrosshairV 3x for POST failures the ---k?!) and I mean almost identical: SSD; 6970; Win7 x64. Wondering if the new OS install will alleviate that lock-up issue. You ever try using "IDE" mode on the SATA channels to get the drivers installed? Might be able to work around that lock-up then possibly install the newer SATA/RAID drivers after reenabling AHCI? Idk hoping to avoid any headaches and tracking shows the mobo is in town today.

My hunch? 13.1 just hates 6970 cards...everyone except 6950/6970 owners seems happy with 13.1

If you have luck getting it to work let me know.
