Opinion: Windows 8 Is Unusable

It's definitely usable.

Not intuitive, though.

I think I just summed up my experience with Windows 8 in 6 words.

So this guy is trying to be like Ben Yahtzee Croshaw? Even used the same style/art that he uses on Zero Punctuation.

His 4 C's were pretty much spot on.

I can use Windows 8 very easily. So can my kids. But, he does have a point on the UI and his 4 C's. Doesn't make it unusable to me, just a bit of an inconvenience at times (which shouldn't happen).

Who cares what he is trying to be. He is getting his message across. I agree with him.

I thought I was going to buy it before the upgrade deals expire at the end of this month. But, I think I'm passing on 8. It's just not necessary for me.

His video? Eh, I didn't have as much trouble as he had with the eval, but then again I was not on a laptop. Though I do remember that 8 did not impress me. Not hated, just unimpressive.

He's saying specifically that don't make any sense. He's working on a document which I assume is on the desktop and the weather app keeps popping up and he has no idea why?

I watched this video a couple of weeks ago - and while I agree with _some_ of his points, I question his ability to use _ANY_ computer by some of the comments he made and his total lack of troubleshooting skills.

In other words, he's a fraud trying to make a buck with a fancy video that isn't exactly accurate.

If you watch the whole video, he does get around to explaining that part.

Anyhow, though he hits lotsa good points, Windows 8 isn't unusable. It's clunky and lacking in design elegance and user-friendliness of comparable modern operating systems like Mint or OSX, but it does work despite being sometimes a pain to use.

Ditto for my question.

That's not very constructive. Also, I don't even see what you're arguing about. If you'd watch the rest of the video before posting, you would have understood the context of this issue with the weather app.

He's working on a document which I assume is on the desktop and the weather app keeps popping up and he has no idea why?

He had a follow up video where he showed a laptop. He eventually figured out that swiping the laptop touchpad, to 8, equalled swping a touch screen.

I do not agree with him, I have been using Windows 8 since about the time it came out and while that has been over the 30 days he used it, I don't think it is nearly as bad as he makes it out to be. I don't like how some things are not as easy to do but to say that it is Unusable takes it a little too far. It is different from what came before it and like those it takes time to learn things.

Nah. Yahtzee is funny. This guy just has a lisp and whines a bunch.

And as far as Windows 8 I'm not the biggest fan but this guy just seemed bad at it. Definitely some pebkac going on....

Much to yabber about nothing.
windows 8 IS windows 7 with a optional start screen and phone/tablet like apps and optimizations.
You are not forced to use the apps, and by default the apps to NOT all of a suddenly take over.
JUST knowing one key "the windows key" you can do just about anything. Do 5 secs of reading and you get a nice list of key combos and hotspots you can use to move faster.
There are free 3rd party apps that can help make win 8 exactly like win7 skipping the start screen and giving you a start menu back if you do what to go there.
This guy is rather off base, lazy, and failing bad at trying to be Yahtzee . . .completely lame

Oh god... another Windows 8 thread? Can't we just stop talking about it and let the turd die? :D

Disable start screen.
Install StartIsBack.

Done. Once the familiar desktop is back, the improvements under the hood make windows 8 much more worth it. It takes literally about 15 seconds to get the old desktop back.

I posted this on youtube, but will post it here as well,

And finally . . . nearly 30 minutes into your review, er . . . rant, you admit that you only used it for 30 minutes.
So your recipe for reviewing goes like this:
Use for 30 minutes.
2 hours writing
1 hour recording audio
2.5 hours animating
Conclusion: you spent more time complaining about Windows 8 than you did using it.

Windows 8 is new, and that means people need to learn how to use it and like it. People hated Windows XP when it came out because of how different it was, but then got used to it and learned to love it.

I'm not in love with touch interfaces in general. They seem much more imprecise and slow compared to a mouse. My biggest complaint about Windows 8 is the feeling that I really should have one of those logitech touch pads or touch mice to use it properly. Other than that it's just learning the new (but still good) system.

And again, it's windows, which means you can do whatever you want to it. Install classic shell? Sure! Tell windows to boot right into desktop? Sure!

He just rants and bitches for 23 mins his points are semi coherent but mostly it's just him complaining something was different and he didn't like it and it took him too long to adjust.

I've been using 8 as my main OS for several months now and have zero problem doing whatever I want to do when I want to do it. Nothing randomly pops up and I can get anywhere I want to at will. Now I use zero metro apps and windows seems to be pretty content to let me do that.

I don't see any compelling reason to move to it from seven, but it's far from unusable. I'll admit I raged a bit at first, but I'm running it completely stock with no UI mods and I see no compelling reason to move back to seven either.

I mean he's ranting about not being able to get to the control panel. Press the windows key on your keyboard, start typing control panel..and it comes up immediately.

StartIsBack is nice and all, but it would be much nicer if you could get it with an official MS update. The fact that it isn't means that it's going to splinter users into those that have it and those that don't which is never good, especially when they're both using the same OS. Just put the damn start menu back and be done with it.

Windows 8 should only introduce you to Metro when it detects you have a touch screen device. Otherwise it should revert back to the traditional desktop with a start menu. Bam, problem solved.

I'm responsible for new pc purchases for a number of organizations. The video re-affirms my concerns. This OS is not good for getting WORK done in a corporate environment. I couldn't imagine buying a bunch of pc's running this and then distributing to the users. It would be a complete nightmare of calls for support and questions.

They say never say never. But I will never purchase a pc running windows 8 for a corporate environment.

I am sure that the camps that hate 8 and like 8 will remain. It seems clear that some users have no interest in even seeing the added touch elements, while others seem to be able to ignore it and use the desktop just fine.

This video is just another in a long line of those upset about 8 or wanting to poke fun at the whole situation.

It will be interesting to see how this division in the power user community affects the wider adoption of 8. Right now there are problems with getting windows 8 hardware out there to demo and sell to customers, but there is also the vocal minority that always gets the word out to the general market about what products are good or bad in their opinion. That vocal minority is split, but there is enough people upset that it could turn many off from even trying 8, so we will see.

LOL. No. He's a whiny-ass poseur.

I use Win8 every day. All day. And none of these issues are even an issue. The guy's a fucktard.

Plus he stole graphics from Zero Punctuation. Fuck that. Un original hack is unoriginal.

The migration to Linux begins.

Until most OEM manufacturers start selling Linux computers in mass quantities at the B&M stores I just don't see this happening any time soon. Most consumers don't upgrade the OS, they upgrade when the buy a new computer.

I've been using Windows 8 since the $15 upgrade deal, did a full clean install and haven't looked back. Is it perfect? Hell no, but neither is any other OS no matter who makes it. But it's FAR from "unusable".

Have you TRIED it? Do you have an ability to field test with an subset of your users?

Jesus. Yes, by all means. Base your corporate business decisions on an internet video from a plagiarist.

I do agree it's not intuitive and the continuity is definitely lacking, I can't call it unusable, it just has a bit of a learning curve..and metro does completely lack any queues on how to operate it. Once you figure it out though, it works just fine.

I definitely see zero benefit to introducing it to my office employees though. There's a learning curve and real upside.

This maybe off topic, but me personally, I still don't see how they call windows 8 "windows" because there are no windows. The only reason they keep the desktop so you can use old software. If they could it would of been gone as well.

Well, thats my feelings just want to voice my view.
