WiiU Controller Question

I just want to confirm something. I see two controllers for the WiiU...the Classic and the Pro. I asked in my local Worst Buy and was given a rambling answer, but here is the gist, I think.

The $20 classic controller is for use with Wii games. The $50 Pro controller is for user with WiiU games and anything downloaded via the Virtual Console, since it acts as it's own controller, as opposed to requiring a Wii Remote.

Sound right?

Pretty much. The Pro controller won't work with older games of any sort that I've tried - including the ones from Virtual Console, although that might be because my downloads are all in the Wii emulator mode. Essentially, it doesn't work in that mode at all.
However it works with some WiiU games (not all!) including the ones you can download from the store.
The Classic controller is for games in the Wii emulator mode...but again, not all of them. Just the ones that support it like Mario Kart and Smash Brothers. It does, however, work with older Virtual Console games from the N64, NES, etc.

(Long story short - you're probably going to be stuck needing both of them in the long run...at least if you have many older Wii games or if you plan to get many)

I'm going to pitch in my concern because I got kind of confused in that explanation a little bit:

I have the normal touch screen controller and I have a wii remote plus (I bought it last night because someone told me I needed it to play zelda skyward sword), do I now need ANOTHER controller to play all my games?

Thanks, Domingo...that's the answer I was looking for. I didn't want to buy both, if the Pro controller handled everything. I ended up picking up both already, but was going to return the cheaper one if it wasn't needed.

Nope - those should cover your bases for pretty much everything. The other controllers are really more for comfort. Personally, I like the tablet, but it can be cumbersome at times due to the size. Those other controllers are there to make up for that if you want something smaller.

Okay my next question then, is if I wanted another wii u gamepad (wii U can connect up to 4, correct?) where would I get one? a simple google search isn't yielding any real results

You mean the LCD controller? If so I am pretty sure only one per console is allowed. Hence the reason why you can't buy one separately.

I don't believe you can buy them separately at the moment. Pretty much all of the Wii U diagrams show only one Gamepad and 4 Wii-motes...so maybe you can only use one for now?
I guess if it is possible, you'd have to have 2 Wii U systems to try it. Anyone know or tried to connect more than one?

Don't bother, it woln't work.

Although Nintendo didn't realy want to make it obvious, the press grilled them on the question of if multiple tablet controllers was going to be supported. Nintendo's origional answer is no, citing a bandwidth limitation on the wireless video feed from the base console to the controller (all video is rendered on the base console, and then wirelessly streamed to the controller). Although after getting so much press feedback/flack from it, nintendo has now said that they are looking into the possibility of supporting 2 tablet controllers at once with a future patch, but I wouldn't hold by breath on it.

Currently, the only way to get a tablet controller is either the one included with the console, or obtaining a replacement from nintendo via their warenty service. Since the system doesn't support more than 1 tablet conroller at a time currently, nintendo doesn't see a reason to sell the tablet seperately, as it would only cause more confusion, fustration on the part of the customer. If nintendo does ever patch in support for multiple tablets, then we will probably see them sold as standalones in stores at that time.

So out of curiosity, if this thing breaks after the warranty expires, how do I get another one? will they just charge me to fix it? Or do I have to buy a whole new console?

You can get them repaired by Nintendo...for $85. I guess considering normal pads are like $40-50 it isn't as bad as it sounds, but it's certainly not cheap.

Are there even any games for the WiiU right now besides Blops 2 and Madden 2013 that would need the Pro or classic controller?

I don't mind continuing to use my Wii as a Virtual Console, but I already had the Wii "Pro" controller...now, it seems like that has just been knocked down to "Classic" and I'd need a new "Pro" to play WiiU stuff.

And I am talking about the Wii controllers, remember one is shaped more like a Playstation controller and the other is shaped more like the old school controllers. Its rounded but the button config is the same. The pro version actually has "legs" you can hold on to.

The Pro controller is an upgrade from the classic in every way.
Its the best feeling controller I have ever touched. The weight is perfect and it just feels great in your hands. I use a 360 controller with my PC, but once someone figures out bluetooth drivers for the Pro controller, I wont look back. Also has built in rumble, that the classic lacks.

Many games use it for multiplayer; ZombiU, Nano Assault Neo, the ones you named, but there's also games that for some stupid reason just don't support it. (Mario U, I'm looking at you. Trine 2 also, but they said the next patch will add support for it, so we will see.)

If you continue to buy games, eventually you might need it. If not just for multiplayer. Also the classic isn't spec'd to work with Wii U games. I see someone found 1 game it works with. Thats 1 game. I wouldn't bet on that, if thats what you were thinking.

I'm also a fan of the pro controller, BUT if you're like me - you'll probably be discombobulated using it at first. The analog stick and buttons have been reversed when compared with the 360 pad, so it's kind of weird using it at first. I'm sure it kicks ass with racing or shooting, but it's a little weird for Ninja Gaiden and just using it for the camera here and there.

The Wii U does support 2x Wii U GamePad. They sell them separately in Japan right now. They will not be for sale in North America and Europe till later this year...the official response from Nintendo is that because no games support the use of two GamePads, they aren't going to try and deal with releasing them separately.

They have also shown that the GamePads are region locked (first time a controller has ever been region locked that I am aware). If you attempt to use a GamePad from Japan on a US Wii U you get a nice screen telling you that it won't work.

Just google wii u support two gamepads and you'll get articles dating back to last June stating that they were going to do it.
