Newegg vs Amazon purchases?

The good news for me personally is that there are some deals on Amazon to be had that I would not have found if I was just lazy old me and used NewEgg to bundle my shipments together.

I've spent about 12K w/NewEgg over the years, and while I might have imagined two emails, I remembered long ago suggesting to KB that he get something from the NewEgg links and he thought it was a good idea at the time.

The stupid thing about it is that in the era of Costco TVs and PCs, that NewEgg wants to screw the "little guys" who just happen to run forums that are expensive to maintain. NewEgg only got "established" because of grass-roots (but still authoritative) sites like [H] that spent money on doing great reviews while maintaining the great forums. Often mentioned, and thus often used was NewEgg. If NewEgg was never mentioned in (not just "our") forums, they would not be the same company today.

I mean, c'mon. It's forum content that builds trust for most folks buying from NewEgg that really drives their business, and by them crapping on the forums, what is the message of the worth of the content generated in forums?

It's a FFF*** sad day when Amazon provides better support to our community than NewEgg does. For all Amazon cares, we could be buying used panties smeared with peanut butter. NewEgg offering less for the metrics from our educated/directed purchases is a slap in face saying that the information that we share in forums is more worthless than my sicko idea. While all the forums except GenMay are currently "free" try to put yourself in KB's shoes and PAY to run a site like this. Freedom isn't really free. Commissioned buying links that help to support the site helped some of us support the [H] w/o cost to ourselves, and by screwing KB and the [H], NewEgg has really disappointed me.

I joined GenMay because it was the easiest way for me to support forums. I might go there someday, but if I don't, I don't really care.

If NewEgg still wants to be cheap, I'll use their well-constructed site to spec and compare EQ, and I'll buy it from Amazon, eBay, Geeks, or whatever OTHER site hits my Google Search.

On a side note, when in the fuck did eBay start charging sales tax for out of state purchases? Between that and them buying out PayPal I think I am done with both

Dunno personally.

The last purchase I did from eBay was on Dec 11th, and while the seller was within the US, it did not include sales tax.

That is Ebay seller checking the box to collect sales tax. Some have to do it for instate sales, others do it to get extra money.

at least they did something.. the tracking number they gave me 3 years ago still says UPS received the electronic billing notice but it still has never left newegg, UPS tried to help me but newegg stone walled them and me. not to mention newegg purposely dragged their feet to make sure i couldn't contact my bank to get my money back by making bullshit promises. i guess it was partly my fault for actually believing they gave a rats ass about their customers. haven't had a single problem with amazon after almost 200+ orders (physical and digital purchases).

problem with newegg is they got to big for their own britches and something like this is needed to put them back in their place. if they actually think this won't effect their business good fucking luck to them.

Yup, when newegg was small and a computer enthusiast site it was great fast and they took care of people, then as it grew and added non computer related crap. started shipping out poorely packaged harddrives and other items... it has been all down hill!

I try to avoid paypal and ebay as much as possible.

i just bought a board off ebay and wasn't charged tax, must be the seller getting extra money idea above

They've already lost about $6,000~ from work since I found out a couple weeks back. They've also lost about $1,000~ in personal purchases as well. So yeah, fuck Newegg. I generally don't even share Newegg deals at all anymore, and opt to wait for better deals on Tiger or Amazon. Plus I fucking love Prime anyway, I had already shifted a bunch of my purchasing to Amazon because of that alone. :)

How good is RMA on Amazon? I always have good luck w/ newegg but not yet experienced w/ amazon.

Well, theres that great Canadian site that price matches most advertised prices.. Still don't understand why, but free US shipping over $50....

Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the following states are subject to tax:

California
Kansas
Kentucky
New York
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
Texas
Washington
No sales tax is charged when purchasing gift cards; however, purchases paid for with gift cards may be subject to tax.

California, New York and Washington are recent additions, not sure about the others. These are state laws designed to increase tax revenue.

RMA is really good; just go through their returns process, print out a label to tape to the box, and drop it off at the nearest UPS/USPS. Depending on the item they'll ship one out when you submit the return on their website or when they receive it. If you need it ASAP you can always contact a CSR and they'll usually ship a replacement out next day (with the standard caveat that if the return isn't received you'll be billed for it).

Shopped with Amazon for tech stuff for quite some time now, maybe three returns/exchanges out of them and all three were extremely smooth. There's also the benefit that Amazon will accept straight return for refund while Newegg almost never does that for some of their items.

Many states you're supposed to be paying tax anyway. It is just that the state tax code leaves it to individual consumers to pay that tax, which they never do. And the state IRS never goes after them, as there are too many online purchases made by everyone in the state and not enough IRS employees.

Oklahoma has a small fixed tax to cover it...or you can itemize but its cheaper for most to just pay the minimum.

I am a huge amazon fan, I have the amazon Credit Card that gives me 3x points on amazon purchases and prime of course. Only down side of amazon is that there is tax in NYC.
I did buy a few things of new egg this year, no tax, really fast shipping (from New jersey) and usually free. I always go amazon but sometimes new egg has deals that I just cant justify going to amazon.

I also got a bit of things at micro center even though its an hours away.
One thing is for sure, 5/6 years ago I bought everything on New Egg. It was awesome, the lowest prices, fast shipping and good customer service. I feel the CS is just ok now, still ships fast but the prices are not always the best.

Makes sense why both NE would try controlling advertising costs and [H] would change vendors. The bad thing is that today's big tech sites like [H] really built NE through the commission model. Then again, NE has been doing this for awhile so I am sure there will be more sites departing.

I hope it'll help support the [H], and when I purchase even non-computer stuff from Amazon, I'll use the sponsored link.

To beat a dead horse, a quote from Forbes:

In its four years on Forbes' list of America's Largest Private Companies, Newegg was never ranked very high. In 2006 the $1.3 billion (sales) computer equipment and electronics retailer debuted at #300 out of 394 companies. While it has improved its standing each year, they were barely above our (albeit increased) $2 billion sales minimum in our 2009 rankings. Why mention this now? Because if this company has slipped below your radar, now would be a good time to start paying attention.

Founded 10 years ago in the aftermath of the tech bubble, their Web site Newegg.com has been a go-to for technology buffs (information technology professionals, gamers, consumer electronics enthusiasts, etc.) since 2001. This loyal customer base has built the company into the second-largest internet-only retailer based in the U.S., trailing only Amazon.com

Thanks for the loyalty back NewEgg! Nice first move towards your IPO - F^CK those that got you there so you can pinch pennies trying to sell panties to "new markets" while not giving back to those who were "partnered with you" even before "the cloud" was a buzzword. If NewEgg wants to IPO anytime soon, I'm going to seriously keep any friends from trying to get in the ground floor and I might even look into scraping up money to short options on it.

After all, picture yourself at a family gathering or social gathering of non-geeks. Everyone knows about Amazon and eBay and Google, but if you mention NewEgg, all you get back is a dumb stare.
