Mom bought herself (with considerable advice from me) a Nexus 7 for Christmas, from the last place to buy electronics (Wal*Mart). What can I say, if it hadn't been $50 less than basically everywhere, we wouldn't have been able to get it at all.

Today it updated to Jelly Bean -- Android 4.2.1. Everything looks fine until it finishes the install/reboot, at which point we are greeted with this little bundle of jolly:

OH FUCKING SHIT.

Like a total idiot, I haven't enabled USB Debugging yet, so I can't just flash the damn thing and be back where I started -- and obviously, Google decided to be a true pile of derp and not include any sort of error checking (MD5sum comes to mind here, common as sand in the Linux world) with their package downloads and updates... way to go guys!

It's been more than two weeks so I can't take it back to Wal*Mart, and the warranty booklet says, basically, that ASUS only covers hardware malfunctions. Way I read it, they won't touch this problem with a sixty-foot pole.

So what the shit do I do?

EDIT: one thing's for sure, if I can't fix this damn thing, it's the last tablet AND last ASUS-made anything I'll ever buy as long as I live. I like my laptop, except for the word "DELL" that someone stuck on the side ;)

1. Doesn't walmart have extended returns for the holidays?
2. Did you try going into recovery and restoring?

"Launcher" is the desktop -- I can't access ANYTHING because it crashes instantly upon doing anything.

I'll call Wal*Mart later and see if they'll do a return.

I'm not sure that the ASUS won't cover something like that, even if the booklet mainly talks about hardware.

My comments are identical to what elzeus said, but here are some links for your benefit on how to get into recovery:

hard reset into recovery and initiating a factory reset

An alternate method to restore via hard reset into recovery and image via ADB over USB.

Recovery is a completely separate thing from the Launcher. To force a full power off hold the power button down for 10secs or until it powers off.

then (quoting from the google help doc):

If you are unable to access the settings menu of your device, you can still reset your phone by performing a Hard Reset. Here are the instructions:

If your tablet is on, power it off.

Press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power until the device powers on. You should see an image of an Android lying on its back.

Press Volume Down twice, until the screen says "Recovery mode."

Press Power to restart into "Recovery mode." You should see an image of an Android with a Red triangle after a few minutes.

While holding down Power, tap Volume Up

Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it
Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it

Note: If at any point during the above steps your tablet becomes unresponsive, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds.

Honestly, it takes a lot to really make Android unrecoverable.

This^ You should be able to boot into recovery and restore.
Shut down > Hold volume down and power > Next screen, press up until it says recovery mode > Press power >
You then get the Android with red exclamation > Press power, hold it and then press volume up > This should give the recovery menu.
I don't own this device, so you're on your own after this :p

You may have already done this, but I'd also search/post on XDA in the Q&A section http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1675

News.

Mom is so overly bent out of shape because I posted this and therefore dinner was late, that she wants to handle it all by herself.

Cue laughtrack. Mom's got all the technical know-how of a Cro Magnon tribe.

Still: she's pissed at ME because I was HELPING HER? Fuck that shit.

Mods close please. I'm done here.

I know this thread is supposed to be over, but sometimes you can get the settings menu to open up and either clear data on the launcher or clear defaults and use another one. I've had this problem before on phones... It's far from dead.

Good advice. I am gathering OP is a Android NOOB. Phones/tablets are 99% the same software wise. If you are familiar with recovery and custom roms for a phone, same rules apply for a tablet.
