Can I upgrade my Laptop CPU?

I have a Acer 7739G-6676, Core i5 480M and I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the CPU. I have looked at the Acer website with my specific model but they don't provide any listings for what the motherboard will accept. Just wanted to see if there was a way to know if it's possible.

Without even looking, I will say no. That said, http://www.your-motherboard.com/shop/acer-aspire-7739g-motherboard/ shows the CPU will come out. IF that is actually your motherboard, I do not know.

Even if you could find a faster replacement, I would say don't do it. Least of the problems I see is heat dissipation. That said, is your laptop part of a 2 or 3 identical specced line that has more/less RAM & HDD? If so, what's the fastest in that line of laptops?

My last thoughts in a word: Don't.

Going along with Rune75 said, if your laptop had a line of laptops that are vary similar then it may be possible, for example Qosmio X775, or X505 had several types and were upgradable depending on which model you had in the line. Same goes for some other companies, however unless you are quite tech savy and can get a "used" cpu it is quite expensive to buy a new laptop cpu and recommend against it as you could spend half the cost of a whole new laptop instead!

Laptop CPU can be upgraded. I've been doing it since the Pentium 3 days. Have done it in a Pentium M, and C2D/C2Q, I don't see how that has changed any. You can find loads of mobile CPU on ebay.

That said, you need the service manual to know how to take apart your laptop. I would suggest you maximize other slow parts first, 1) SSD and 2) more RAM.

If the guy ain't sure (no insult to pontiac), I'd keep the CPU off the table... ram is the easiest. HDD can be worth it and not very hard to do. Depends on if he wants to ghost the old HDD image to the new drive or do a fresh install without all the bloat. Hopefully he has a legit copy of Win7 around so he's not using the Acer Win7 disk that came with the laptop.

I just put in a Corsair SSD in it today, with a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate(Legit) and that majorly helps out, was just curious if the CPU could be done

^^^^ Ram next! Double it and go as fast as will work in there.

I think the Intel® Core™ i7-620M Processor is your option. Same socket pin type and temps are the same. Bios would need to support it, not usually a problem. The chipset does support the i7 processor so all you have to do is update the BIOS to latest version. See it on Ebay for $150 to $200.

OP, are you still planning on up grading your CPU?
I'm thinking about upgrading to a i5 to replace my i3 370m.

You will be able to upgrade the CPU but it will likely require major dis-assembly of the unit.

You are safe up to dual core, quad core can be tricky as they had no integrated GPU.
