It looks as though Apple will have to dig into its petty cash fund to pay this one. Hell, the company probably spent more than that on lawyers just to fight the case.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court ruled Thursday that Apple violated the writers' copyrights by allowing applications containing their work to be distributed through its App Store, according to an official who answered the phone at the court and said he was the judge in the case. He refused to give his name, as is common among Chinese officials.

Makes me wonder if they first asked Apple to remove these apps, before suing them. I feel that makes a difference in whether Apple should have to pay or not. If they didn't, then what's the likelyhood that Apple would find every single piece of copyrighted work in the hundreds of thousands of apps that sits in their store.

Sounds like a racket to me. Chinese company concerned about copyright infringement and a Chinese court actually cares?

I think it's hilarious how when some Chinese copyright is infringed upon, China seeks damages but if any outside copyright is infringed upon by Chinese people then China doesn't care.

Maybe Apple's lawyers should have just flat out denied that the infringement ever occurred. Apple should have just removed the any evidence of the infringing material and when asked about it they should have said they never saw it and any evidence that was produced they should have passed off as fabricated.

"We can tell by the pixels that this is an image created with a pirated copy of Adobe Photoshop."

It makes no difference if the author(s) are in China or the U.S. If their works were published / sold without their consent then they are rightfully entitled to compensation.

They didn't. It's a state sponsored scam by the Chinese, if this stands it could have a big impact, making it impractical for official markets to sell any apps but those from large companies. This will be a big problem long-term if it's not dealt with although Android wouldn't be quite so gimped with sideloading.

It does to China. Your comment suggests that you know absolutely nothing of the current climate of gross copyright infringement in China and the Chinese government's hypocritical selective enforcement of copyright.

So, another foreign company dipping their hands into an American companies cash reserves via the courts like one big cookie jar.

And since when the fuck does China care about copyright? They straight up ignore any and all American copyrights and there are tons of companies producing counterfeit products with full government approval. Yet they expect American companies to adhere to Chinese copyrights?

I just wonder how long this "China can do anything it wants to and we will gladly let them" attitude will work for us.

I laughed at this. No secretary? Must be hell when you rule against someone, the prank calls would get annoying.

Until we wise up. We're letting our lust for inexpensive consumer electronics cloud our judgment. I, for one, am getting a little tired of it.

I agree, but these companies also knew about the lack of protection they have while operating in these countries. Their whole purpose is to save a buck operating there and in the end they still pay. This is really a shitty ruling to happen to Apple.

Anyone else find it amusing that China will go after American companies for Copyright infringement, but then continue to let copyright infringement run rampant in their own country? This is a hypocritical money grab by the Chinese government.

You don't think its wrong because you are upset with typical business practices? That is fine, but you have to look at the whole picture. This is a scam and a serious one at that which can take control of ANY company that operates within China. Just because you dislike Apple shouldn't make you like this as it can have effect on any company operating there.

As far as I know, Google is still fighting China over shit that happend 6+ years ago.

Don't care about Apple one way or the other - their overpriced consumption boxes arent even on my radar but you've gotta admit its fitting.

And as far as complaining about injustice when it comes to foreign companies trying to operate in China - which last I checked was still communist - well that is incredibly naive.

China prosecuting American companies for copyright infringements? When are they going to start prosecuting their own violators?
Answer...never.
What a joke...

The real news... China has courts?

The real news ... China has an actual "justice" system?

I thought you just walked into the nearest communist main office (of the people of course :D) and simply told them what you wanted as well as handing over a Samsonite case full of $100 bills?

How about that. Good on you China..
