So, here's my tale of woe: I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 off eBay - Seller said it had a clean ESN, the online ESN checker said it was clean (and still says it's clean) but Sprint says it's flagged as lost/stolen and I have a $520 Paperweight.

I'll get my $$$ back from paypal through buyer protection, but if my last encounter with the service is any yardstick, it will take between 1-2 months where I'll have neither working phone nor cash. With the economy being what it is, this is only going to get more common (and not only this but I've read stories where people bought a phone and after the ebay protection period was up the seller reported it lost/stolen and the buyer had no recourse at that point)

So, my question is wheather any major companies offer used/refurbished phones at good prices off-contract. I dont see a point in wasting upto $300 on a new device when there are plenty of good, often pristine used ones out there (and the tree-hugger in me is yelling about buying a new device means a used one gets thrown in a landfill) but after all this, I'm spooked from buying a used CDMA phone off eBay (and it's considered the safest place to get them >.<)

Does it have to be a smartphone?

I have a few old flip phones laying around. I'd send you one for free if you could use it.

Thanks for the offer, I have an old flip phone active right now (Samsung SPH-A900) I'm looking primarily for a place to buy a clean Note2 below MSRP when I get my refund from the eBay scammer...

Cowboom is your best bet but your not getting a note 2 under $500 anywhere.

I paid $520 for my "clean esn" note, I'm willing to pay upto $500 + shipping if it's from a reputable company that I dont ever have to worry about reporting the device lost/stolen after I buy it...

I'll check cowboom, thanks :)

Since you're sprint, this will work for you: Get one off Craigslist, meet AT the sprint store. Have it activated on your account, then hand over the cash. Once it's on your account, the other guy can't have it flagged as stolen. Ask the Sprint rep to notate the details of the transaction on the account if possible.

Man, I have a brand NIB and sealed T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 that I would have sold to you for $500+shipping just to help you out bro. Sorry to hear about your situation, hate how people are willing to screw someone else over just to make a quick buck. I hope you find a legit GN2 soon.
