We posted on this earlier today in our gaming news round-up but I wanted to give this a post of its own so you guys can comment on it.

"The sale and filing are necessary next steps to complete THQ's transformation and position the company for the future, as we remain confident in our existing pipeline of games, the strength of our studios and THQ's deep bench of talent," THQ CEO Brian Farrell said. "We are grateful to our outstanding team of employees, partners and suppliers who have worked with us through this transition. We are pleased to have attracted a strong financial partner for our business, and we hope to complete the sale swiftly to make the process as seamless as possible."

Company of Heroes 2 better come out.... I don't give a crap about the rest... just let that come out!

Never been a big THQ fan, but recent games have changed some views on it. Saints Row 3 was awesomely done. Saints Row 2 wasn't too bad but it felt like the controls were bad so I couldn't get too far without giving it up. 3rd made it good, and it was a fun ass game. Darksiders were pretty good as well. Devil's Third was probably gonna be a day one buy for me as well...

It's sad to see them die.

I hope they get through, I thought the recent Humble Bundle featuring their titles actually improved their stocks and garnered additional funding for them in the process. I want company of heroes 2 so badly, lol, darksiders franchise was a blast as well

Damn. THQ used to make junk games years ago, but latetly has made some great stuff. Saints Row 3 was a blast and more fun than I've had in years, especially in co-op. The THQ humble bundle was a fantastic gift. This really saddens me. :(

RTFA people. It answers all of your questions. Remember there are many types of bankruptcy.
Step 1: Read article. Step 2: Think about what the article said. Step 3: Comment on the article.

For those of you who didn't read it it said that I bought THQ, all of the $ form the Humble Bundle went to me and I am liquidating the company immediately. You loose! You get nothing! Good day sir! :D

Oh no!! I LOOSE!!!! <---- :p:p:p

No but seriously, I RTFA after I posted lol.

Few gems, hampered by endless lame duck games

Their fun games though are fun for fricken ages though, can't say that about most fun games these days

i was never big on their games, then i played Company of Heroes and loveddddddd it!!! i spent i think a week straight playing it!

I'm hoping that another Darksiders game is in the works. Please, THQ, get through this and let it be so!

My uncle is Dan Cermak, he works in Volition on Saints Row and some other stuff, I asked him how things were and he said they have a buyer so he isn't worried, seems they are taking the correct path to make a proper recovery.

CoH 2 will ship.

[Disclaimer, I wrote the campaign narrative for the game, as well as all the unit speech, and when I left Relic in September the game was in pretty good Alpha shape]

According to this article from the Wall Street Journal...

It seems that THQ has an arranged buyer, and financing through the buyer and Wells Fargo to keep on operating.

They claim that all development is/will continue and that they have no layoff's planned as a result of the filing and new ownership...
Hopefully that is true and the company emerges strong and intact.

I call bullshit , there is ALWAYS lay offs during a transfer of that kind. Right now I don't think they will fire anyone until the start of next year simply because of the holiday.

Frankly whatever they are saying now is likely bullshit considering they don't want to cause a panic among the employee's.

If they do the Chapter 11 right they could actually come back stronger than ever, especially if the game releases that they have for next year (which look pretty darn solid franchise/gameplay wise) do well. I'm crossing my fingers for them, I actually have pre-orders on a lot of the upcoming stuff since I do like the majority of what THQ releases. :)

I just want Metro: Last Light. I don't care about their other games. I mean, Homefront 2 is about the only other, but Homefront was kind of disappointing. Plays great, way too short.

I've not been against THQ's game offerings in general, nor have they been particularly crappy with respect to DRM. They've made/published some nice offerings - Darksiders/Darksiders 2, Company of Heroes series, Warhammer series, Saint's Row series etc.... however, one thing I can't abide is the way they've handled DLC in recent years. Look at the DLC available for Dawn of War 2 : Retribution, Saint's Row: The Third, and even Darksiders 2. TONS of little items, not necessarily sold for little amounts of money, many of which are of the "reskin of a character or item, weapon/item that should have been in the game anyway etc.." type. Worst of all, most of these items are aready in the game files MONTHS in advance - hacked versions of say, Saint's Row: The Third were able to unlock items not legally sold (certain costumes etc...) for several months down the line. These are the kind of bad design/business decisions that make me hesitant to purchase one's title. Or, if I do purchase the base game I feel no immorality in unlocking all the DLC "manually" instead of waiting 3 months to pay $4.99 to buy a skin.

THQ is certainly not one of the worst gaming companies around - I'd rather see Activision go bankrupt if I had the choice (while protecting decent studios under their umbrella, now out from under the yolk of their evil master). I would have much rather THQ revised how they dealt with DLC and go about making high quality games, rather than this. Now, the landscape gets that much smaller.

Company of Heroes

Best damn RTS ever. I cannot even count the hours me and my 2 boys spent playing multiplayer matches. When Brian Wood passed away in that car accident in 2010 I thought Relic and the COH series was dead forever. I'm hopeful COH2 does release.

I think we're going to see more layoffs as their games finish up. They said pretty straightforward that if there is a game they are developing, they are determinied to release it. That's what they need, because THQ has their hands in a lot of things.

Saint's Row the Third and Darksiders did change my opinion of them, even with that terrible screen tearing problem with the first Darksiders.

My issue with THQ is there constant nickel and diming with DLC.

How about instead of selling stupid hats for 2.99, you make nice little "expansion packs" that you sell for $20 bucks, you know like the used to where you got some goodies, new guns, cars, maps, missions, whatever. and make silly crap like a couple of hats FREE so your paying customers feel appreciated.
It kept the shelf life of the game longer, and they didn't plummet so fast to bargain basement prices.
(Granted they did this to a degree with DOW, but they still have 80 million pieces of DLC)

I love the cheap games, but there is a new "must play" AAA title every week which forces prices to lower quickly.

Now everyone is accustomed to $5 steam games.

(Reminds me of a time when cds were a reasonable $12, then the prices crept to around $20 and people got mad and used napster instead, so then people got used to cheap/free, so albums only really sell for $5-$10 anymore, with many people just buying the single for $1. If you try to take advantage of your customers, they might still buy the product, but they will buy it on their terms.

Assets already bought by a no name company and a portfolio of crap I haven't heard of before besides Buy.com, makes me wonder if this will be another one of those situations with the CEO of EA. He worked for Elevation, was involved in the purchase of Bioware and Pandemic, and then a year after he took over EA again he took Bioware and Pandemic with him (for a small fee give or take a few billion), glad I got Dawn of War 2 and all the expansions when I did, unfortunately makes up for half of the bundle they are selling for $25, will get Company of Heroes 2, and the south park game, and that will be it for them I reckon.

That THQ humble bundle makes so much sense now. I had all the games I wanted from it, so didn't get it.

As for the DLC everyone is complaining about... You DO realize you don't have to buy it, right? I played SR3, too. I bought some DLC. The stuff that added new quests (there was a nice 3 pack). And, when they were on sale, I did buy some new weapons, and vehicles, too. There are about 20 different DLCs, though, and I had no intentions of buying all of that. If you feel you NEED to, that's a problem you should probably talk to someone about. Your obsessive compulsive disorder needs professional help. They're making stuff that appeals to different people. It's not intended to appeal to everyone, for the cosmetic stuff. However, cosmetic stuff can be quite popular. But, if you don't want it, don't get it! Pretty simple!
