The War Z - Zombie Survival MMO

I took the time to contact steam and inform them that after purchasing 183 games via steam, I will not make any further purchases until War Z is removed from steam.

false advertising alone, its steams job to verify the items they put up for sale..

I dont care if its a shitty game, or even a total fucking shit-explosion, but there is no excuse for false advertising making it on steam. And even now, with these dick devs blaming everyone for misreading the game features....Im facepalming so hard

Wow so much bitching in this thread like a bunch of whiny school kids. Look obviously this game isn't perfect nor does it claim to be. I however been playing it since day 1 of its "Alpha" release and I believe it has gotten better from every patch. If you like them on Facebook they keep you updated on what they have done and will be doing in the game. Before anyone ask I paid for the Legends pack that they offered and I enjoy the game still even with the hackers WHICH they are currently trying their best to get rid of and taking care of those that were wrongfully banned. Why can't people just play the game and enjoy it?

Some people like myself don't like being lied to or misled. This isn't about the game quality or features. Its about the blatant misrepresentation of said product. I applaud those who voice opinions and have taken issue with this company. I wish people would do this with more titles so we could eliminate this new normal trend that has happened in gaming. These people are hardly whiners.

Why can't people just play the game and enjoy it?

Because the game is terrible?

1 An unoptimized game with textures from 1998 (pretty much the same assets, etc from their previous F2P game)
2 bad animations
3 bad melee system
4 no tutorial/help for new players
5 game costs money and has micro-transactions
6 micro-transactions are for items that aren't permanent and can be lost instantly on spawn from griefers/hackers
7 set amount of players per server instead of varied
8 no pve servers
9 pay to clan
10 4 hour spawn timer with pay-to-spawn quicker
11 no swimming
12 no private servers
13 buggy/clipping issues

I could go on and on, but I won't waste my time about how bad the game itself is.

All that said, the developer falsely advertised the game on Steam including screenshots that are not of the game as it currently is, features that may or may not be implemented over the next couple years, etc.

Also the main dev (who also did Big Rigs Racing) after being called out on the blatant false advertising, said it was the buyers fault for misinterpreting the features.

At this point, I am going out of my way to recommend to everyone to not buy this game or support this developer.

It's Valve's fault as much as it is the developer's.

The dev forum posts and even the gamespy interview blow me away. These guys are straightup assholes and they dont care who knows. The foot-in-mouth comments are brutal and the lies are outrageous.

It's also rather ridiculous how hard they try to silence anyone who voices their opinion that they don't like the game or the action of the devs, or when people post evidence of things the devs have lied about in the past only to have the thread deleted and their account banned, even if the thread is articulate, constructive, and not trolling or flaming. It's one thing to police threads that are nothing but flamebait, but this is completely different.

For instance, here is a quote from a thread on the Steam discussion board for War Z that I was following. I went to check it out the responses again later in the day and the thread was deleted. Fortunately I was still able to go back in my history and copy and paste it. I had a couple others I was also following and they were deleted as well, but unfortunately it looks like I didn't have them cached in my history like this one. IMHO they're not hostile or flaming, they're just trying to point out things that happened in the past. I'm almost tempted to create a new thread over there and put it back up.

Before Buying - Know The Facts (Informative) If you're put off buying because of the scam reports. Check.
Hey all,

UPDATE: Appears the traffic crashed MMOGC. You can view a summary of all of the below information:

http://mmoattack.com/mmo-news/critical-hit-opinions-on-the-war-z

I've been a Steam user for quite a few years now and I feel obliged to let others know what they're buying before they pay for it. The War Z is not like the majority of other games I've seen on Steam as it's had a rather sketchy development cycle and arguably one of the most hostile gaming communities I've ever seen.

I'm not about to tell you not the buy the game, hell you may really enjoy it. However, I am going to show you some information regarding the games development and a large portion of the reasons why so many people are suggesting you avoid it:

Starting at the beginning. The War Z developers have been accused of a highly unprofessional approach to developing. They've been seen swearing in-game, on forums and been accused of far worse. That's before they stole the League of Legends ToS directly from the game.

Secondly there are the screenshots. Not only do these portray things in the game that are impossible, they are also touched up quite substantially. A full explanation can be found below:

New Link: http://mmoattack.com/mmo-news/critical-hit-opinions-on-the-war-z

http://mmogamecentral.com/the-war-z-screenshot-game-comparison/

There have also been PROVEN reports that developers have spawned in-game items after the wipe, having quite a severe impact on the flow of the "economy"

New Link: http://mmoattack.com/mmo-news/critical-hit-opinions-on-the-war-z

http://mmogamecentral.com/the-war-z-hackers-exploiters-crooked-developers/

Despite announcing that there would be no hidden costs, the developers implemented a highly basic clan system with their original intentions involving costs, although this has since been addressed.

Finally, the official forums were hacked which lead to an ex-mod stating that the game was a scam and that development would cease.

The moderator later retracted his comments via these videos (which some have said are a result of legal pressure)

And lastly, they recently banned over 3,000 players and flat out refused to admit they made any mistakes, despite a number of players not deserving a perma ban (based on the rules laid out by the developers)

So there you have it. That's about all of the negative press that has surrounded the game. Please be aware that many of the features listed on Steam are not planned for over a month.

You've got the information, the rest is up to you :D

Happy Gaming!

Update: Sadly MMOGC has crashed so individual articles are not available but a summary article of the history of The War Z can be found at the "New Links".

They patched the game guys! now spawn time between deaths is only 4 hours and if you want to respawn faster you have to spend 50 microtransaction dollars. This makes the game more realistic since if you got hurt in real life and went to the emergency room you'd spend at least 4 hours in there and it's going to cost you money. Great patch Hammerpoint Interactive for making the game even more realistic for your true fans!

My post drips with sarcasm. I hope you caught onto it.

I've heard some people compare it to the Facebook games where you can spend money to recharge your energy. I can't say I disagree either.

I actually really enjoy the game more after the patch. WHen a char dies I just roll a new one anyway (why start with nothing, not even a flashlight) so the respawn timer is not really a big deal to me.

The most noticable changes to me are that they changed the zombie hit detection to be a little more fair, it also takes fewer hits to kill a zombie (at least with a melee weapon), and the zombies drop game currency and items a LOT more.

It also seems like they increased the chance of finding decent loot. I spent four hours playing on monday and found jack shit, like potato chips. Last night I found two guns, a helmet, ballistic armor, and a couple hammers.

So give these guys time, it might not be lying, it might just be they are completely unorganized jackasses. :)

Well as I've pointed out above, they're trying their hardest to cover things up by deleting forum threads and banning users, even the ones on the OFFICIAL STEAM discussions. It's deceptive revisionism.

Yeah, except those games are almost always free. Here you are paying $15 minimum for an Alpha-state game with microtransactions.

The rage over this game kind of baffles me. It is what it is. If you think it's not worth your time, don't spend your time on it! Miraculously, that is how a free economy works. When products get ignored and other products get support, the supported product will succeed and the ignored product will fail.

Except with this particular product there is a lot of evidence mounting to basically what amounts to fraud. And that's not even to speak of all the other shady practices that are not illegal but are shady nonetheless.

Aren't both these games based on the Operation Flashpoint/Arma/Arma2 engine?

Ha ha! No.

I'm sorry, didn't mean to laugh at you, just the concept. Have you actually seen WarZ? DayZ?

If you haven't, got take a look, and you'll have a great laugh as well... or simply watch TotalBiscuit's video, then good DayZ vid.

ArmA is a seriously heavy, "sim" engine. WarZ is, well... complete and total shit, with textures and geometry from ten years past in most ways.

This goes well beyond simply being disorganized. This is potentially the biggest false advertising cash grab the PC gaming industry has seen in years. They aren't helping things at all by claiming buyers "misread" the game information. The original game info was presented as facts and very clear.

Exactly, hence people taking an apathetic attitude such as "just don't buy it" would only allow for other snakes to possibly make further attempts at ripping-off the public in the future.

It's not about games or gamers alone. It's about standing up for the consumer's rights within the industry, and not letting companies get away with fraudulent business practices and generally sneaky, lying bullshit.

It's about being an adult and showing some responsibility. Would you want your kids to have been victim to these assholes?

It's the indifference of people that allow for things like this to continue, and we cannot be indifferent, which is already a large part of the reason the world itself is as fucked as it is these days.

Did you even read the last few pages?!? People are pissed because they believed what the developer was saying and put down money for the game. No one buys a game on Steam and expect the game information is full of lies. People want what they paid for since many people ordered early.

If you ordered a bacon cheeseburger at a restaurant, then someone brought you a cheeseburger and said you misread the menu, you would be pissed. You certainly would not be like "LOL free economy, it is what it is!"

I'm not even supporting the game and the rage is being transferred towards me. This is why the rage baffles me, it just seems unnecessarily potent. If you bought the game, and feel ripped off, by all means raise a stink and get a refund. Heck contact Valve and tell them your experience and how you think it shouldn't be on Steam. Then be done with it.

Make threads about DayZ and how much you are looking forward to it. Raise the public awareness of DayZ standalone. That is how the public will get to know the better product. Vote with your wallet, and things will turn out alright. Raging at me and other internet randoms won't make WarZ go away.

I agree the rage is unnecessarily potent. It's morphed from an indie paid alpha that dissapointed its early users to a full-blown vendetta on Steam with Valve getting dragged in. The carryover from the game's independent period is astonishing. The commitment these anti-WarZ people is remarkable.

I agree they have some valid points, but I think a lot of the thread deletion and such is because these people are just spitting pure rage and it's not seen as objective feedback per se.

You have to put the "rage" into context. These are people that have paid for a product, made fair statements only to be censored. I'd say rage towards the developers of the game is justified, and people upset with Valve are justified as well. We should all be able to have civilized discussions. I have a problem though with people who think we shouldn't complain, or raise public awareness. Isn't that one of the cornerstones of our society in America? Aren't we suppose to expose business practices like these? If i'm a young kid I don't know any better, but i'm an adult gamer now. I'm suppose to speak up when people are getting screwed. Same goes irl. Just my opinion.

Yeah amaroth you have a point there, and the one thing I think is incriminating from a Steam angle is they've changed their description of the game, so they indeed had promised features and such that weren't in the game at all, and that is false advertising.

I think an good example of the difference here is would be Mass Effect 3. It didn't live up to people hopes for the game but it really didn't specifically advertise content that wasn't there(not talking about EA DLC bait and switch stuff just the game complaints.).

Here we have a clear specific scenario where the Developer falsely advertised one game and then produced another. Mainly they took WarInc and reskinned a few assets to introduce zombies. It didn't go well and the game has many issues. This is compounded by them falsely advertising features that don't exist. They could have gotten simple backlash from the first, but to clearly lie on their steam page has just gotten them in extremely hot water.

I think this stems from the frontrunner having poor english skills and Valve not slapping them on the wrist. My money says the game stays on Steam but Valve may make an apology issue a refund offer and make them clean up the steam store page. When steam started introducing F2P games I made a weekend of going through all of them. Generally I can say "Stay away". With few exceptions the majority of F2P games are just ATMs. The fact that Hammerpoint is already known for this means whether or not this game at any point does meet the features they advertise it's still an ATM "Stay Away".

It's not just Steam, the game has been removed from almost all digital distributions but Gamestop were you can pre-order it again for 30 in 2013 :(

shitty ass gameinformer protecting their marketing partners of course.

damn shut my mouth i didn't think steam would pull it. Probably temporary though.

I see the buy button has been removed but the listing is still there, what's the word on the forums? Are people getting refunds?

I almost have to wonder if the company will eventually just pull the plug on the whole thing and take the money and run. Doesn't seem like it would be out of character for them.

Yeah that was my thought after reading this. Based on their MO the whole "easy money" thing isn't compatible with owning up to your mistakes and making amends with the community.

Wow, great move by valve to pull the game.

I paid $20 a couple months back to start the alpha, and honestly, this is currently my favorite game to play. A full loot PvP FPS is just ridiculously fun, despite the current false promises.

This was the right move by Valve if they did have any integrity. It was too widely reported for Valve not to take some kind of action. The game was clearly still in Alpha, Beta at best. It was misrepresented both in build status and features. It's a shame and I feel bad for the customers that got duped. At least Valve is issuing refunds as they are requested.
