as the title says.. what controllers are recommended? i'm looking at using my laptop at my parents as a light gaming machine, but i'm looking for controllers. laptop does have built in bluetooth, if it makes any difference.

The xbox 360 silver controller is the best choice for compatibility. In general xbox 360 controllers just work.

negative no slightly less crappy dpad or play and charge kit.

You can get most controllers to emulate the 360 controller. which is good because that controller is baaad.

A PS3 controller will work wirelessly over bluetooth (theres a few steps to this but it's easily doable) and with Motionjoy you can emulate a 360 controller (for compatability).

Please, for my own sanity, please expand on this "controller is baaad" statement. What about the 360 controller is "baaad" ?!?

D pad, uncomfortable shape, cheap plasticness, junky sticks, wonk sticks, non rechargable battery. Also really really ugly. But it's opinion, other people might suit it better, just for me it's pretty terrible and the webbing etc. make it uncomfortable.

Stiff analog sticks. Less solid, weaker rumble, and much worse triggers then the xbox S controller that came before it. Proprietary connectors and wireless, doesn't come with rechargeable batteries.

You recommend a PS3 controller over a 360 controller? LOL. And your reason is dpad and rechargeable battery built in? I mean COME ON!

I also prefer the PS3 controller. It's more comfortable and the button clicks feel better - more accurate. Using them for FPS games - Xbox controller whoops them, but if you are using Steam you should be using kb/mouse at that point. Personal opinion.

Pretty valid reason if you ask me. Didn't Microsoft revamp that d-pad in most recent years?

The silver controller I suggested has a rechargeable battery.

lol you are a little on the bias side here, really you cannot find any one single thing that is good about the XBOX controller?

Anyhow I can say yeah the XBOX controller is not the greatest input device but the fact is you are going for convenience any time you use a controller because they are the worst possible input devices ever created. The shape is very comfortable to me. The buttons, well they are garbage on every controller, the D pad is where the XBOX controller really sucks but it is not the end of the world. After all you wont be fatality with any controller he just wants to sit back and casually bumble through some games.

Also if you want to save some money buy the wired controllers for PC, then you dont ever have to charge anything and they are cheaper.

They did put a new switchable d-pad on the silver controller I mentioned as well as some other premium controllers, it certainly did not bring the D-pad up to speed but it does improve it. Anyone can admit the D-pad on the XBOX 360 controller is a short coming.

For sure I agree, the 360s d pad sucks balls. However the controller itself is excellent. If the PS3 controller was literally plug n play in Windows, I'd probably use it but it's not.

Ya this is a big area were sony drops the ball, see sony now days, and perhaps always hates the PC they make it a total pain in the ass to use any of their products on the PC, zero support, blu rays PS3 controllers etc...

Its their stupid management who cannot see that more PCs with blu rays = more people buying Blu Rays, and more PCs using PS3 controllers = more people buying and sticking with PS3s.

On this forum with a little work anyone should be able to get the PS3 controller working on a PC with steam and all, so then it comes down to , do you want to get it working? And is the shape of the controller right for you.

Honestly, I'd rather use what just works. Since a controller wont really be used by myself that much due to the fact that I don't play games that benefit from a controller setup much. I mostly play RTS and FPS games which a KB/M dominate with. Therefore, the controller needs to work with the less tech savvy friends/family that want to plug it in and go. Granted I could set it up for them, but chances are it WILL need to be fixed sometime in the future and I'd rather not deal with it.

Plug and play or no go.

Even plug and play controllers need their buttons mapped out, sometimes for each individual game. So nothing will be set it and forget it, except for the few Xbox360 controller "ready" games.

I'm having good success with using my DS3 on the PC using MotionInJoy even with Dolphin emulator.

Go with the 360 controller, its become the standard for most games as of late. Logitech controllers are also great with good support in games but, you might find yourself setting up the controls more often then you would with the 360 controller

The 360 controller is the standard at this point. It has a lousy d-pad, but otherwise really is an excellent controller. The analogs are still the best in the biz, and the buttons are easy to reach, too.

In terms of Big Picture, it's one of those things that sounds better than it is. Lots of games like Assassin's Creed, Batman, GTA, Driver, etc. use sub-launcher that still need you to hit something with a mouse (or at least hit enter on your keyboard) before the game will launch. Until Steam offers a way around sub-launchers, Big Picture will be crippled.
