Straight from the horses mouth, everyone can quit panicking. ;)

“Intel remains committed to the growing desktop enthusiast and channel markets, and will continue to offer socketed parts in the LGA package for the foreseeable future for our customers and the Enthusiast DIY market,” Intel spokesman Daniel Snyder told Maximum PC. “However, Intel cannot comment on specific long-term product roadmap plans at this time, but will disclose more details later per our normal communication process.”

Exactly, if people are that paranoid they should be focusing all their anxiety on December 21 and the Mayan Apocalypse :D

Because corporations never lie to keep Wall Street happy.

Steve you get 4x :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: for that one

121212 or 122112? What happened with 10 20 2012?

Google deleted it. Also the Mayans likely wrote the date in a more modern/weirdass way (still don't get how month/day is logical or practical, you don't go Hours/seconds/minutes). :p

That's just a fancy way of stating Extreme >$500 processors will always be socketed

I read about Intel going socketless on semi-accurate it should be called always-inaccurate .

I can't imagine they'd bother with non-laptop machines. Cause as the article states, it could adversely affect OEMs. Intel included, as they sell motherboards too.

For me, I'd hate it. I don't always have a need to upgrade my motherboard, when I upgrade my processor. I do with my main rig, but never really do with my other rigs.

"Even" if this happened, its not really that bad . As most times you always get new platform (MB) with new CPU .
Plus there moving on more an more will be integrated into CPU , the MB will be just a interconnecting PCB .

Intel may go with soldered parts in the mainstream but as long as the enthusiast market exists Intel will support it.

It's a "rumor" from more than one source and has apparently been circulating around the motherboard manufacturers for a while now.

I was listening to Anand's podcast, and if they're to be believed, it should only be Broadwell that's BGA only, thereafter everything returning to LGA.

Therefore Broadwell should be an OEM-focused architecture that's main target would be these new thin all-in-ones and the thinner notebooks - though we might even see tablets incorporating Intel's Core architecture given a sub-5W TDP.

I imagine that if it goes over well we might be seeing the consumer lines going BGA only while the Xeon/Extreme series would still have to be LGA.

Yeah, most likely those who buy entry-level, mainstream computers but either don't know how to upgrade them or aren't tech-savvy, will get soldered-on Broadwell desktop CPUs (or even desktop SoCs). That would make more sense.

A mid-range or enthusiast Broadwell CPU or future CPU for that matter, is going to be a convoluted mess of configurations, costs, and headaches.

Wake me up when they integrate the motherboard into the CPU. They did it with graphics chip, so why not the motherboard itself? :-P

lol. And they should throw the PSU in there as well! :D

lol, crow feast incoming. caw caw!

(besides, it was an absolutely moronic rumor on its face.)

Hey, whatever happened to "only the paranoid survive"?

Hey ... I actually booked the 21st as a vacation day ... I figure if the world ends (highly unlikely) at least I will be getting some last minute gaming in ... if it doesn't then I get to watch everyone running around preparing for and talking about the world ending ... Win-Win in my book

Besides, you never know ... the Swedish Swimsuit Team Bus could break down outside my apartment and all those girls need someone to comfort them during the impending apocalypse :p

They were never going to stop making socketed processors.

Right now there are two desktop sockets, 1155, and 2011. The socket that they were talking about discontinuing was the future successor of 1155. They were never talking about doing away with sockets for the successor to 2011.

But socket 2011 chips carry a pretty hefty price premium. You won't be able to get away with buying the cheaper 1155-style chips for 95% of the performance. Of course Intel is happy to have you pay $700 for your 2011-style processor instead of $300 for your 1155-style processor.

There you go!

Most of you are blowing this completely out of context. They may reduce the volume of socketed parts as the markets move to more SoC type designs. But we knew that was coming anyway. They just want to have a "slice of the pie" so to speak. And the more "Pies" the better.

How expensive it is to custom build a gaming PC will in part depend on whether, or not, AMD is able to remain a somewhat viable competitor. Because its only natural for a company which has a monopoly to want to capitalize on it. And one of the best ways to do that is to reduce the supply.

If they are smart they will realize that their products have to be somewhat affordable. But you can't depend on them being "smart". And personally I see them integrating what was once our gaming PC into the back the new high resolution TVs. And most of you won't really care because they'll sell you with the awesome graphics. Only a few of us will be "hold outs" and its reasonable to expect that we'll have to pay extra for what we want.

You mean the unsubstantiated rumors were wrong? Color me shocked. :p

All the whining and belly aching .. can't believe anyone took this seriously.

STOP READING GOSSIP/RUMOR SITES AND PROCLAIMING IT CONFIRMED INFORMATION YOU NINNIES!

No one ever said it's going to be a full headlong rush. It'll be gradual.

This where the future is moving, and we all know it.

"Something changed."

"Reality might be 180 degrees from the rumor I posted and """"""verified"""""" as 100% correct, but I was always right."
