The once heavily visited Usenet site has shut down its web operations due to lack of funding. Membership in the ‘news’ service has fallen dramatically since the UK courts ordered the site blocked and heavily sued by the MPAA both as Newzbin 1 and 2, contributing to the sites financial problems.

"We don't have much more than about 40,000 active users and the number of premium users is in the small thousands. It costs much more to run than we bring in. It just doesn't stack up”.

Werent they like 5x more expensive? Like $40 a year if you didnt get the half off sale.

$40 seems good. Last time I was interested, Giganews was like $5/month for decent bandwidth.

Ahhh thanks. It's been awhile. Wonder if Binsearch had anything to do with it?

Doubt it. Binsearch is a PITA esp. once you've used to tools like SAB, sickbeard, couch potato, etc.

More than likely it was the other hosting sites that don't charge, or if they do charge it is considerably less, that contributed to newzbin's demise. Couple that with the the fact IIRC newzbin released user data to authorities and had taken a beating in the UK court system. The even had access to the site blocked by British Telecom.

Let's face it though, I predict newsgroups shrinking in the future. Many studios get their films pulled quickly as do many television series.

Torrents were great, they kept the heat off usenet.

Never was around when Newzbin 1 was around but the reincarnation was absolutely horrible. I'm surprised they got any traffic much less paying customers.

Yeah it is, i donated 10 bucks about 4-5 years ago and that's all I've ever paid to use their site. Then i use gaganews which is alright.
Usenet in general and Nzbmatrix in particular have been getting too much attention lately (the bad kind). Many usenet providers have implemented automated takedown API's, where a (purported) rights holder (or rights holder's representative) need only submit an NZB of supposedly infringing files and it will be automatically wiped from the provider's servers.
No verification, just straight submit->deleted. NZBmatrix conveniently indexes all these files and makes them easily searched for otherwise clueless copyright enforcement outfits.

If these usenet providers want to stay in business, they should hire Peggy to handle MPAA/RIAA/BPI/ect takedown requests.

Damn, looks like the governments win, the rest of the pirating should come to a complete halt soon!

Hmm I remember paying for access to the first once, once it got torn down, I stopped caring.

As previously mentioned by a few people this was just the host of the NZB files -- not the actual repository of the data that people seek.

Since it's already been said, I guess I can mention that NZB matrix is indeed where the action is at these days.

NZBsRus is also pretty good, for some reason my linux server running sickbeard/sabnzbd pulls the nzb release much faster on nzbrus than nzbmatrix. But I used both :D

NZBsRus has been down for like 2 days... I fear it's gone kaput too

I seriously just topped up there too. 350 days left of premium service. Bastards.

Usenet itself is just a shadow of what it once was. A lot of casual users dropped out once the major ISP's stopped providing access, and the watchdog groups started controlling a lot of the newsgroup providers.

My ISP provides access with newshosting but the speed is capped at 96kb/sec * 4 connections, I just have an unlimited account with them

I miss nzb-zone but nzbs.org is great

Oh I remember the days when AT&T and Comcast offered unfettered newsgroups access.

so now that nzbmatrix is gone, and the nzbs.org and nzbrus sites mentioned here don't work, what are people doing for their fix?

thanks for that.. and if anyone does have invites I could use one in a pm! ;)

Welcome :D but seriously I'm not even a member of that site. However I have some good news brahs I found http://nzbs.chica.be just register (it's free) looks like a nice replacement for nzbmatrix. Checkout the forums once you join it looks like a good amount nzbmatrix refugees are making this their new home :)
