Hey guys,

Something strange is happening with my comp. It seems that at night, rather than go into standby, my computer will just shut off. I'll come back to it in the morning and it's as if we lost power...but we didn't.

It never turns off when I'm using it. I've never actually seen it happen. It's literally operating perfectly. Could it be something wrong with the power supply?

Specs in sig, using Win 7 64bit

If it were me, I'd check the event viewer and see whats happening overnight that might cause it to shut down. It could be a lot of things (updates running, 3rd party software, bad hardware, a specific windows config, etc)

A few questions

  1. Are you overclocked
  2. What kind of powersupply
  3. how old is the ram

There's a few more things to check but lets assume its hardware for now

Have you checked the power options to see if its set to shut down after a certain amount of time with inactivity?

I don't think it's this but I'll check.

PSU is a Corsair TX650w. Ram is only a year old. Going to check the event viewer. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Check event logs?

Open even log and take a screenshot and post it up.

Looks like all that happened was my computer went into sleep mode. It's just shutting down for some reason. I think it's my video card drivers as I recently updated to the 12.10.

i would see if there are any other people complaining about those drivers. There is also a setting in the control panel that shuts off your hard drive after a certain number of minutes. its under advanced settings. If your Mobo drivers or firmware is out of date this setting can cause the computer to just shut down when attempting to spin down the drives.

Yeah, I would change your power options to never shut down drives and not to sleep just to see what happens. Or set the timers to one minute to try to replicate the problem.
