Planetside 2

Why didn't they sell this game at full retail ? Market it as a better Battle Field 3 style game. BF3 sold well, this would easily sell just as well if not better @ $59.

I just don't see how this game makes big money just off micro transactions ? How will long term support be ?

Right now there is nothing beneficial about being in a squad, and it doesn't seem to help teamplay very much. IMO there needs to be some more advantages for random groups of people to work together better.

You'll be much more successful in a squad of people who communicate and work together. And have more fun. That's a pretty huge advantage! PS2 is very much a group based shooter.

Agreed, but right now (and maybe because I'm new and just don't see it) they don't give random pubs any incentive to do so, which to really encourage broad-based teamplay, you need. Of course people organized offline first will always have the advantage, but (IMO) the game needs to more actively shepherd and reward individuals towards squads and larger group formations.

As F2P I was willing to give it a try whereas I wouldn't have even looked at it had there been a $50 or $60 price tag on it.

The average weapon costs $7, camo is $5, and I think that the other appearance changers are $2-$4 so there's plenty of money to be made. I'd say that long term support should be good provided there are people subbing and/or purchasing the extras. The devs have been listening to the community so I'm betting that support will do well.

There has to be some joke here about SOE actually making a good game, then forgetting to charge for it.

Or this is a very elaborate Everquest3 beta. ;) Same engine.

I think keeping it free will keep the population high. A game like this needs moving targets and even unpaying bodies builds community which may eventually convert to subscriptions. Back in Planetside1, a ton of people played for the first 'free' month before subscription fees kicked in, then didn't re-up and pop dwindled. And that game was sold at full retail too. So experiences there must have influenced their decision here years later.

Whats the deal with buying items? Myself and a few friends have been playing and are thinking about getting into it full tilt....but I think we are on several different servers. I take it purchases are locked to a specific solider on a specific server?

Holy hell, here is an awesome way to farm XP from watching others do the same thing.

1. Get a Sunderer, make sure and have the AMS spawning system equipped. Optionally have the ammunition option equipped.
2. Pick a heavily contested region that your team controls and is easily defended. The bases that are simple towers with landing pads at top, AA guns, and AT cannons work best. Examples include The Crown on Indar and The Ascent on Amerish. Some of these bases have their primary spawn points off to the side when everyone needs up in that tower to spawn jets, man the turrets, etc.
3. Park the Sunderer in cover, deploy, reap the insane XP. When those spawn points are off to the side like that, you would be amazed how many people do not want to run 100 meters to their destination.

Yes I know you can park a Sundy anywhere and farm XP from people spawning on it, but this a very specific way of doing it. Yesterday, the Terran Republic held The Crown for 8+ hours. I did nothing but farm kills and XP by repairing the turrets and supplying the MAXES camping the landing pads providing AA cover. There was ONE sundy there that everyone spawned out of instead of running 100+ meters to the tower from the buildings outside. The Sundy was parked inside, in the corner next to the stairwell leaving plenty of room for spawning vehicles to exit and it was shielded from all attack from the outside.

Combine all that with my DoubleXP perk, and it was a prosperous day.

Yes, that is the case. I never understood why MMO's won't let you transfer a character to a different server provided there was enough space on the server.

Steam profile names... have we started a list yet?

I would be down with some [H] grouping (no homo).

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLES WITH FRAME RATES:

See here.

After doing this I was able to pull 30+ fps in large battles (will dip down lower when noobs are spamming rockets, but not terrible) and 60+ fps otherwise. On a macbook retina.

You'll want to adjust the resolution to your native resolution, of course. Also check the sound settings -- for some reason they're lower than usually (just adjust them in-game after you apply this). Don't replace the entire useroptions file -- just the stuff that is pasted in that thread.

Tootles.

Doing this raised my FPS running around alone from ~35 to ~70. Had no chance to test in battle yet, but the game feels completely different (in a good way). Running a GTX 260 core 216 and an i7-920 @3.8.

Thanks for posting.

The devs actually answered this question at some point (sorry, I can't find a link). More or less their reasoning was this game requires a large population for it to function correctly and thus they decided on a f2p model to maximize the amount of players.

Believe it or not buy f2p games tend to rake in a hefty amount of cash.

No problem, glad it helped you!

Yes, station cash that is spent on x server remains on x server. Smed has said they will be opening up server transfers eventually.

Eventually could mean a year from now -- so coordinate with your friends and get on the same server now if you intend to spend money and play with them.

I could have sworn I saw some tooltip or read somewhere that a squad leader can create a spawn beacon. Hrm, I'll have to look it up now. Really, they should be able to. You need to spend 30(?) cert for the ability.

Anybody have problems with the in game voip? I get sound in only one side of my headphones?

My buddy and I had several issues with ingame VOIP, from lag to it just not working. I setup a vent server on my netbook and that fixed the problem! :p

I think you mistook what I said with the "tab" key. Like when you press TAB and see kills/deaths/etc - I know that particular function is for the area.

But when you browse the actual Leaderboards, and set it to Outfit, it has everyone's stats in there, including played time. My friends absolutely did not get 400+ kills in a single area. :p My stats are pretty accurate though (93 - 33), whereas some of my friends are 200 - 7, and have confirmed that at least the deaths portion is completely out to lunch.

Oh, my fault. This game definitely has more than it's share of bugs. But still enjoyable.

You can buy the squad beacon with certs I believe. I haven't played much since launch but that's how it was in Beta.

Agreed. Last night these 2 other dudes and I just kept taking over bases, or whatever they're called. We'd just follow eachother and kill whoever got in our way. Then they used this portal thing that launched them onto another building. I used it, but it for some reason made me jump again when I landed and I went out of bounds and couldn't make it in before the 10 seconds was up.

I bought the Hawk missile launcher last night. It's good at scaring pilots away but is far too weak for the cost IMO. It takes 3 hits to take out light aircraft, looks like 8 or 10 to take out a gunship, and just does a tiny sliver of damage to a Galaxy.

I just have to say this is the best FPS out today, and as a bonus it's a proper PC game. Can't recommend it enough!

can't decide if I want to go for the maxed out medic gun or the revive/heal grenades .. hmm

I really wish infiltrators could use shotguns (like in beta). RAPE

Having a hard time deciding what layout I want for my NC engineer, I've put some points into the repair tool and armor. I also have the red dot sight for the default gun.

Any tips out there? is it worth getting a new gun before I finish upgrading my armor and tools?

wow this game is fucking AWESOME.

really wish i had never played the beta. cause it prevented me from playing because i got in so early...

so is it worth it to buy guns or a membership? how do certs work exactly?

is there a [H] squad out there?

LOL BRILLIANT

found that shit on reddit.

supposedly they were able to deploy the sundy as well..

From what I know, certs are like experience points. You spend them to upgrade guns/abilities, but they come incredibly slowly at the stock xp gain. Membership gives you a boost to XP, which you can also buy temporarily with "station cash"--the microtransaction currency. $1=100SC.

Guns cost outrageous amounts of certs, OR some station cash. What the devs have done here is made it really, really attractive to purchase weapons with SC instead of wasting a shitload of certs on one gun.

i noticed that. cause really i should spend my certs on upgrades and abilities right? i think i might buy a few guns today.

You gain 1 cert every 500xp you earn, and I think 1 passive cert approx every hour. You spend them on abilities/upgrades for your character.

Don't spend certs on guns -- get some station cash and use that to get guns.

It should be noted that all the infantry guns are essentially side grades. Higher damage at the cost of worse accuracy, etc.

Some of them may be worth it depending on your play style -- I know I spend some money and got myself a shotgun for my medic and a bolt-action sniper rifle for my sniper.

I don't know of an H squad but I can't imagine everyone is on the same server :(

so when you buy guns its usually for your vehicles or..? cause the weapons youre saying are pretty balanced youre usually just sacing something for something. accuracy for dmg etc

Paid for vehicle guns I would consider an upgrade. Some of them, at least. Rocket pods are pretty much amazing for the small aircrafts.

I bought a shotgun for my medic and a bolt action sniper rifle since they fit my play style better -- if you want to spend money on guns for your character just make sure they fit your play style.

Also, you can 'trial' guns from the store for 30 minutes. If you make a new character you can trial a gun, and then delete that char, make another, trial a gun, etc.

Just click on the 'buy now' or whatever button and select the trial option.

Got this on Waterson, happened Sunday I believe. First server to have this happen. Vanu took over matterson Monday or Tuesday.

Having a TON of fun with this game. Do we have a [H]ard group going or any [H] members on Waterson East?

What's your guys performance like ? I'm noticing like 45-60 everything maxed with one exception and that's shadows on low. Any suggestions on settings to improve my fps a bit ?

I believe it is 1 every 3 hours.

If you get SC, wait for the gun you want to go on a daily deal.

Leaderboards were down all day yesterday, thought they were going to fix them, but I guess not, since they're back up and still bugged. I took a SS of what I am talking about though:

q62BV.jpg

While my friends aren't total noobs, their deaths should be more in line of what that Giglianomiromicon guy has. There's absolutely no way they have KDRs of above even 2, and they've also said they've died way more times than that shows. Mine (Mazama) is correct, as well as Gigli's. When you look at the All Players leaderboard, some guys on there have KDRs over 3,000. LOL. Edit: Also just noticed that KlausterFokken's kills aren't being sorted properly.

Love the shit out of this game so far. It's like BF3.... but open world. Infiltrator is definitely my favorite class by far. Nothing like flanking the enemy, perching up on a tall rock, and shooting their heads off.

Not to mention hacking terminals and turrets. Nothing like hacking a terminal in an enemy base and then having Armor spawn all over them... or hacking a turret while they enemy is using it, and watching them booted... lol...

PS2 freaking rocks. This game will only get better as time goes on. As it stands, I haven't had this much fun with a shooter in a long time.

I keep reading you can unlock force drop on the galaxy but I don't see that as an option available. How do you get it?
