AMD is proud to support Nintendo’s newly launched Wii U home console as the supplier of custom AMD Radeon™ HD GPU technology. As announced at E3 in 2011, the custom-for-Nintendo AMD graphics processor enables Wii U to provide exciting, immersive game play, brilliant HD video and game graphics and new forms of interaction for consumers. Since 2001, AMD technology has been included in more than 118 million Nintendo Wii and GameCube hardware units around the world.

This is good news, AMD needs to stay in business to provide competition, let's hope they become competitive in making good decisions again.

so nintendo gets a bobcat and sony and microsoft get some type of trinity ? You know u were all thinking the same thing!!

Depends if they did like with the Xbox, etc. and just sold them the designs. :D

So this is out in the stores now? I thought I read something about it released on Sunday but didn't see a lot of fanfare (or commercials) for it at all. A quick look on ebay shows people trying to cash on on "I need to have it now" mentality tough, so who knows... I'm guessing it sold out on the first day.

Problem is nintendo is not expected to sell many of these systems. Amd needs more than a few million units to stay afloat.

Is this royalty based like the past agreement for the Wii? If that's the case, AMD won't be seeing much money for at least a couple of years.

I saw one on display at Wal-Mart on Sunday. Was like $300. Didn't actually have any playable games, just a demo video.

Biggest complaint I have read about is the supposed 5GB firmware/software/OS update and rumors one person bricked his. (he unplugged it during the update, well duh!)

That.

There's nothing wrong with the up-front payment and minimal royalties. Apparently the Wii U is using an older architecture, so most of the development costs are long paid for.

That's not even really news, it's entirely expected. Nintendo had the hardware made and boxed and shipped, working and improving software during the months it takes to do it. You can expect all new systems to be like that.

Also what kind of moron unplugs during an update where the screen displays nothing but DO NOT UNPLUG ME, i lost Internet connection during wiiU update, and it kept download progress just fine. Short of if where you live is regularly plagued by power outtages really it shouldn't be an issue, if it is an issue you should already own a UPS, unless you don't give a shit about your computer and be able to salvage the download and update if an outtage occurs.

In the end all new consoles might end up with some kind of AMD SoC. Those rumors ain't just floating around for about an year for no reason. We need more actual specs.

It'll sell out for several months at least... you're incorrect.

Very. very, very, very very very, very, old news.

This x 9000!

In the end all new consoles might end up with some kind of AMD SoC. Those rumors ain't just floating around for about an year for no reason. We need more actual specs.

No one knows the actual specs yet but next-gen consoles (and not the Xbox branded media set-top box MS has been talking about, that will be SoC) will in fact be full fledged gaming machines. People keep throwing around SoC and that just is NOT going to happen for next-gen. These people act like they haven't seen the MANY tech demo's of NEXT-GEN GAMING ENGINES as if those are going to run on a quad core ARM CPU and some lowly two generation old GPU (as an example).

The next consoles WILL be POWER HOUSES. Even Sony themselves said that the Playstation 4 will be a full on next-gen console meaning fast ass CPU, powerful ass GPU, and tons of RAM.

To think otherwise is ignorant. Why would the big 2 release consoles barely faster than current gen systems? Makes ZERO sense and isn't going to happen.

I mean, really, am I the only one that saw Square Enix's Next-Gen Engine??? You think all that tessellation, particle physics, cloth physics, etc is going to even have a chance of being powered by ANY SoC or APU?

GET REAL!!!

sorry bobcat is two cores.... just saying these are probly some type of apu

Read above. If anything the only system receiving an APU would be the set-top box/media hub Microsoft is developing. This is NOT to be confused with the actual Xbox 720 (or w/e it'll be called). The next gen systems will be powered by hardware WAY faster than a APU. This is a fact. I mean, any current APU or any coming out in the next year are considered just barely faster than a current console.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't personally understand why so many people think it'll be APU's/SoC that'll power next-gen consoles. It really boggles my mind honestly. Just look at all the "rumors" of next-gen...none of them point to an APU. Xbox World magazine supposedly said the next Xbox will have 8GB of RAM and a quad core/16-thread CPU. Granted this may not be REAL but considering the times I don't see it being impossible. Especially if the CPU is specially made (if you had heard of the Cell processor a couple years before the PS3 was released you wouldn't have believed it either...).

So it is of my opinion based on the state of current technology, rumors, and statements made by Microsoft and Sony themselves that make me believe that next-gen consoles will most certainly be much Much MUCH more than just some low powered SoC based box.

Again, if you don't believe this I think it's time to get your head checked.

You need to go for a walk or something. Maybe some yoga. In other words, chill out.

Using an APU is a perfectly viable option. Will it be the SAME thing that goes into a socket FM2 system? Likely not. As we saw with the Wii U, the GPU is an AMD design, but heavily customized. So it's not unreal that a customized APU might be deployed.

isnt AMD going bankrupt? I can see it now Wii U overheats or locks out during gamming

Ahh that explains why it's strugling to reach multiplatform parity with consoles from 2005-2006 ;)

PS4 is already rumored to use a SoC. MS has mentioned interest. AMD is pimping SoC's.
Do you understand what an SoC is? It's doesn't mean its weak by any means.

BTW, FIVE HUNDRED NINTY NINE DOLLARS isn't going to happen again. Unless said console maker wants to exit the market.

Uhh... Given that no video game console released to date by any company has had anywhere even "kinda sorta almost close" to enough RAM, I doubt at the very least that much.

I believe the Star Citizen developer that current PCs are already significantly more powerful than the PS4/720 will be, and I'd be willing to put like a $100 bet on that should any of my friends (not here lol) be willing to lose some money :)

16 core IBM power cpu... not threads.... i dunno... seems too good to be true

Isn't is one of the rules in this forum, "Thou shalt not post links to Tom's Hardware?" :p

Or maybe I've been in these forums too long to bring that up ;)

I agree with the previous thread that MS/Sony would be absolutely insane to make a $500+ console with 'uber awesome' hardware. I just can't see it ending well for either of them.

Maybe Sony will jump on the 3D TV gaming bandwagon and forget that 3D TVs that make you wear $50 glasses are a bust.

No, it wont. Every person i knew who stood in line for the Wii is NOT buying a Wii U.

O R LY?
2 million preorders sold out, which is double Wii preorders.
All new store stock sold yesterday is sold out in my area and elsewhere.

Yes, yes, doom and gloom everywhere

if nintendo can sell 100 million units over its lifetime, how much can AMD make?

I'm guessing that's probably only $1-2 billion in royalties. Still not a lot of money per year.

No, no, that's sounds about right. :D Ahhh, those were the days.

Yeah, folks around me are either pre-ordered, are/were thinking about pre-ordering, seriously considering purchasing when available. Wii-U will do just fine, I think.

Spire's closed circle of acquaintances is far more accurate metric for sales of this new console.

The resale market might not be able to approach the profit margins of the Wii but people are still buying them up even at a premium.

LMAO. Fanboyism at its finest. Rumors and opinion with contradictory statements of fact such as "will be" that can in no way be proven. Also, just because the manufacturer states something will be a powerhouse with no actual specs in said statement doesn't mean that all your fanboy wishes on such specs will be true. It means that they are stating marketing bullshit, and the most you can hope for is a direct comparison to the product's predecessor. If they confirm specs that meet your fanboy wet dreams, then be pleasantly surprised.

I will stick to desktop PCs for gamming Wii U is really 600 lol.

The zombie U game has worse graphics then LFD 2
