You can always count on Steve Wozniak to tell it like it is.

Having already worried that Microsoft had re-incarnated Steve Jobs, Apple's surviving co-founder now worries that Redmond might be simply more creative. He also offers that Steve Jobs didn't have to be such a "bastard."

It's not really difficult being more creative than a company that creates nothing other than litigation and ways to rip off other companies ideas...:p

funny how many people hate on woz we he talks bad about apple, but love him when he praises apple.. the cnet comments are full of apple lemmings bashing woz.
damned if you do, damned if you dont. Woz will always be one the greatest innovators of all time in my book.

Woz rocks. People who love tech and free-thinking, love Woz. People who love only Apple, can't handle the truth.

I really respect Woz, He is almost never wrong, says the truth, yet is still that great humble guy, my respect for the Woz as always

I agree with all the Woz respect being tossed around in this thread.

I've got nothing but respect for Woz. How can you not respect someone who tells you what he thinks instead of what you want to hear?

Thats deep bro

That like *explosion sound* my mind

Psheww!

Your obvious bias is obvious. What's the "RFD?"
Reality Fig Distortion.

It's difficult to gauge how 'creative' any company is. It seems to me, though, that what Microsoft's done is taken Jobsian minimalism to new levels, in some ways successfully and in some ways unsuccessfully. I'd argue that Microsoft is currently being bolder than Apple, but I'm not sure if what they're being is more 'creative'.

That's assuming a lot of things. First it's assuming that Apple was innovative to begin with, for the past 15 years. Then we're assuming that Microsoft was able to out innovate by being innovative. Of which I do not know.

Unless market share = innovation, but then we're changing the definition of words.

I would tend to agree.

Apple's OS has been using the same UI since the '90's. I don't understand how people can go bonkers over the SOS every year.

Apple does two things.

Take something that already exists...

and puts it into a new package.

Nothing they have invented themselves. All tecnologies they've "innovated" on they purchased from other companies. The iPod wasn't even an Apple product until someone else showed them the concept. Multitouch wasn't an Apple thing until they bought the company that held the patents. Their aesthetics are completely lifted from Braun. OSX is still a WM stapled on top of BSD.

Apple is in an unfortunate position where product refreshes are the only thing they have left. They've taken to lifting Android designs wholesale (window shade notifications) and their Desktop OS and iOS UI is more stale than last year's fresh baked bread.

I can't wait to see what Apple will rip off next.

Being creative is one thing, having product that just work, make sense, flow, etc are another. Microsoft is not a market leader, they are a follower and are know for copying others efforts. I really dislike Microsoft.

They even copied their OS name from Cisco. While maybe not a direct "copy", the still didn't come up with it on their own...

The only man that ever came from apple I respect..Hell the only fucking apple products I have are the ones he made the apple 2
They are the only things worth anything everything else apple made is crap.

Has apple ever really invented anything (Post Woz):

I think the results from all submissions amounted to 3 things that were "invented" by Apple after Wozniak left, but they were all minor, kind of lame, and fairly unsuccessful products.

Apple doesn't invent things, and they don't innovate much either. They mostly just take existing products, remove as many buttons as they can, clean up the UI and packaging, and then overcharge you for it. Don't get me wrong, aside from the overcharging bit this is not inherently a bad thing, it just isn't invention at all and it involves only a very small amount of innovation.

Apple should DIAF though. Not because of their products, but because of their horrid business practices and because of their corporate culture that causes them to treat their grown adult customers like children.

I love how "THE WOZ" now is opening his mouth about negative points of Apple now that Jobs is dead and buried. Yet us geeks knew better regardless of what this tub says. Whatever Woz. What ever.

Can't really argue with Woz on this one. This has kind of always been true. Apple has just been more successful at making products more more sexy and marketable. But Microsoft has always done the real leg work in making the os and devices cross compatible and "have it your way" at the expense of it being pretty.

I'll take function over form most of the time.

And I agree on whos products we owned. The apple 2 was the last major apple product I used, other than this Ipod I currently have... which was the best choice two years ago. There's much better choices now thank goodness.

Because Jobs really had a great track record of handling people disagreeing with him.

iOS, iPhone, the Apple name, shortening it again to Apple Inc. (Twice sued by Apple Corp over this), the iPad name, swiss clock design, etc... Apple has a very long history of taking things they want for themselves and calling it their own, prior art and usage be damned.

In all fairness almost every company does what apple does. Just some are not very successful. Also if you think android is original you haven't seen all the stuff they copied from completely and then reworked later. Google is just as big on copying as Apple is.

Microsoft has ripped off its share of things. Typically, they find it quicker and easier just to buy the company that created the initial innovation and kill it internally. Some of it fights its way out and becomes the tech Microsoft is remembered for (and not just the crashes and the viruses for those of us who've largely escaped them).

It should be easy for a corporation that had such a practice of hiring buy buying wholesale innovators to continue to innovate, but my guess is that the golden handcuffs kept them from really fighting to get the next innovation out.

Wozniak speaks the truth, he's earned that respect, his rebellious nature is what gave apple its edge. Jobs was always the maniacal manhandler with many hats, while the Woz gave apple its crunch. Together they created an orchard of sweet juicy Apples, but I'm pretty sure Apple inc in its current incarnation isn't the company he envisioned growing up with 'Captain crunch's' poster hanging on his wall.

why is Woz still relevant at all? I don't get it. So he help start apple and then left when Steve went all douche baggery on the company. Now he just gets fat and teaches computers to kids.

Left? more like cashed out. It's easy to reflect, but theres no telling what any of us would do with a carrot that sweet dangled in front of us. In hindsight, yeah maybe there's some regrets here and there and how many of us can't owe up to some, but even then there's no denying the world isn't a better place without his influence, even if it came with Job's copycat infringement, sue happy legacy.

Why is Woz relevant? Well I think its because he no longer has some company's PR line to follow... So he can make statements like these without getting canned.
