I've been using my Asus G73 laptop since my rig is down, until my 7990 water blocks come. So I've been having to convert some of my video on the laptop, there no doubt this laptop holds its own pretty well. Though I noticed with all 8 threads at about 75-90% the cpu was only turbo boosted to 1.7ghz so only a .1ghz boost.

I was wondering if there was a program that would force my i7 720qm to boost up to the full 2.8ghz. It would make my video encoding and converting go alot faster.

Have you run any program to check your temps? I have this odd feeling that with all 8 threads at 75-90% for more than a few seconds at a time you might be running into thermal throttling issues.

download the modded bios and i think you'll be able to do it then

i think the boost is on single core, but if you download a modified bios you should be able to overclock across all cores.

That would be crazy, the cooling needed would be horrible on the 720.

It won't hurt to try. Just monitor the temps and maybe modify the fan curve.

Those fans can only push so much, I just don't think its worth it to save a few minutes on encoding. The 720 should be pushing pretty fast already.

I assume you are not video encoding on the go. If you have a cooling base that can push more air than the native fans (I have a quad core Envy 15 with an aluminum chassis) then you may be able to overclock, but would need to keep an eye on temps.

True, but im just stating a possibility. If he had a 920xm or a 940xm it would be the way to go. there's a guy on notebookforum who's trying to hookup a close water cooling loop on his g73 lol

Haha I would love to see a water cooled laptop!

i7 720qm max turbo boost using all 4 is 1.73ghz 2.4ghz on 2 and 2.8ghz on one. so everything is working as it should, the 1st gen i7's got hot quick which diminished their turbo boost functionality.
