Anybody Returning their iPhone 5?

ill probably end up selling my 5. i love the design and hardware (except the absence of a NFC chip....), but im bored of iOS.... also with android....

so im gonna try out the windows phones.

It's always lasted me through the entire day. I have 4g with weather/news updates every 25 minutes or something, facebook every hour, email every 15 minutes I think. I also play temple run/listen to music for at least 40 minutes during school and then when I get home and work out I use it for music as well. GPS is on as well, although I turned it off now because it just bothered me(FB and other stuff). I have to recharge it every night, but it easily gets me through the day.

I have all those on, it lasts me all day depending on what I do. But under heavy browsing/texting it almost dies just after lunch, haha.

Nope. Love mine.

edit: previously had a GS3 for ~3 days. What a plastic-y piece of junk. There is just no comparison to how these phones feel in your hand.

This is indeed one of the trade offs. I worry more about damaging the S3 compared to my past iPhones. Hopefully a case will remedy this a bit (I never used cases really on the iPhone).

There are plenty of productivity applications on Android and iOS as well. The limitation isn't the operating system but the form factor. A tablet just doesn't work very well as a content creation and productivity device, even with a physical keyboard. It'll get the job done in a bind, and can even work quite well for some lightweight work, but I certainly wouldn't get one for that sole purpose.

Er, office does exist on android or iOS. That is a big deal in terms of productivity. It goes the windows based device a real leg up.

And the form factor is just on your end. Most tablets are only slight smaller that an 11-inch MBA.

There are plenty of alternatives that work just fine with native office documents that people have been getting along with just fine. Apple brought their iwork suite to iOS not to mention the hundereds of 3rd party office replacements all over both Android and iOS. However, if you want MS office, rumors are going around that they'll be releasing an iOS and Android version sometime early next year. I really don't see it as something that will cause people to drop their Android or Apple tablets in favor of a surface... especially if they're already heavily invested in the marketplace (who knows though)

Like I said, it works, but it's not ideal. Most tablet bluetooth keyboards don't work very well as they're designed to be compact and portable and typing on the touch screen isnt that great either for long sessions. You can work on a netbook too, but who would want to when a traditional laptop or workstation does the job better?

There are plenty of good apps for android. And there are a lot more functional apps (as in apps that help you do work and not just bs fart apps) The majority of major best selling apps are on android as well anyway. And I could care less about first person shooters as they suck on touchscreens. The controls are attrocious. They have them if you want them and you can actually hook up a controller on android so thats better than iOS in that respect.

Not true, only about 18% of iOS apps are games, despite the fact that games are huge on iOS.

iOS is the #1 target platform in productivity as well. The best versions are out on iOS first, and many of the best apps (Reeder, Alien Blue, Jasmine) are iOS only with no plans for Android ports. Even Microsoft, as huge as they are, released their productivity apps on iOS first. Skydrive and others took over six months to get on Android after it was released on iOS, and a similar delay is looking like it will apply to Office as well.

The same incentive applies to developers doing productivity as it does for games: iOS is more profitable and easier to develop for, hence the difference in quality.

I am - but only to go from AT&T to Verizon. Better coverage, there's actually 4G in this area... Huge improvement over my iPhone 4.

I love mine...coming from galaxy s2 facotry unlocked:

S2 Pros:
android maps/gps nav was fantastic
gmail > icloud for syncing
S2 cons:
battery life was horrid, even upgraded to the samsung 2000 mah battery and i found i needed to keep chargers everywhere, car, office, beside my bed, beside the pc to to get through a day (yes im a heavy user)
all versions of android software rooted or not, the phone would get hot on occasion, drain battery even quicker than usualy, random reboots(even with a fresh reset so wasnt a cheesy app to blame)

tried an s3, same issues only the phone felt large and clunky, too big to be a phone

ip5 pros:
its fast, all the time..no need to reboot to get phone speed back to that zippy quick state
i can unplug my phone when i leave for work and not plug it back in until i go to bed
apps are just as good/on par with android but seems apple has filtered out many of the crap ones
ip5 cons so far
new cable connection
gps works fine for me but its kinda blah

apple build quality fit and finish is much better just feels solid and not the cheap plastic feeling, not saying ots more robust, it just feels nicer in the hand and to use

For the sake of argument, I'm going the other way.

I have used iDevices in the past (Ipod Touch G1, G3, G4, Iphone 3G/3GS/4/4S) and currently own 2 iPads (G1 64gb 3g, G3 16gb 3g) As well as an Apple TV (soon as many as 3) and a MPBr. My primary concern is non-device-specific, namely that an iPhone integrates better with my current Apple ecosystem. But As for OS specific:

Android:
-Constant tweaking to get it to work the way I want, major battery problems (but this is an EVO 4G, which is known to have poor battery life)
-No easy backup/restore
-No easy music sync (yes I tried DoubleTwist and GooglePlay)
-Investment in iOS apps
-issues with some websites (I literally have 1 site I visit that's around 5FEET long on my android device (even though on other devices it resizes properly)

WP7:
-Much smaller App selection
-atrocious interface, worse than android, worse than apple (feels like an Xbox)
-Investment in iOS apps
-(surely more but right now there's not a lot of data on WP7)

iOS:
-Just WORKS out of the box with no tweaking (though I do like to add my SBTools(?) menu - not important, it's not even installed on my iPad3)
-GREAT battery life for music
-Easy, quick, OTA sync for music/media
-Great support
-Amazing Screen
-Amazing Sound
-Streaming video from AirVideo with little-to-no hiccups

The only major cons for me on iPhone 5 is the screen size (which I can live with since I carry my iPad as well most of the time), the new "lightning" connector (which is almost impossible to get extra cables for and obviously incompatible with the old 30-pin chargers), and atm, no Jailbreak (though I'm sure this is on it's way) so no simple MyFi tethering.

It boils down to what you want from a device:
iOS is great for media
Android is great for data-crunching
WP7... no idea yet...

Ashton, I think you mean WP8 :p

How about I just call it "The bastard offspring of MS after brutally murdering WindowsCE?" (yeah, tiny bit sore, I liked WinCE/PPCOS/WM)

But yeah, WP8, guess I was thinking of Windows7...

Funny story. I went into BB to grab myself a phone and do their trade-in shit, since they're willing to give me upwards of a hundred bucks for mine, not a bad deal at all, and I don't want to sell it on Craigs. Anyway, after waiting in line only to find out that the phone is sold out in the 32GB flavor (the one I want), the people around me and the best buy guy try to get me to "switch over" and get an S3. I felt like I was trapped in between a slew of cultists telling me all the reasons why the S3 is "better than the iPhone". I wanted to say "but I have hundreds of paid for apps...", but I just laughed and walked out instead. I hope new shipments come in soon. I ended up calling around the area and there are a ton of white 32GB models, but I want black damn it!

When I want office, I want the real thing. I'm not going for a scaled down tablet version for the documents I generate. I'm sure it will work find for simple docs, or simple spreadsheets or presentations. But once things get complex, my bet is that it will fail and fail bad.

Have you seen the Apple and logitech BT keyboards? These are about the same as the one on the MBA. You don't lose much with these. And IME, nothing is ideal when it comes to keyboards. Highly personal device.

I havent got my iPhone 5 yet. But I really only got it because I can sell it back for tons and buy a Lumia 920 with it and have some money left over lol.

And how do you figure that?? The Lumia 920 is going to be priced between $750 and $850. The iPhone is priced at $650 for the 16GB and $750 for the 32GB...

Did you see some of the FS threads? They were being sold for like $800+. Not sure how they did it with carriers like Verizon though since your phone has to be active for at least 6 months before you can legally sell it.

Yea... But the key word is "were". :( The demand for the iPhone 5 is only going to go down and the Lumia isn't even released state side yet. I don't forsee them going for above retail any longer (unless they have AppleCare or something).

I really don't think the demand for the Lumia 920 is going to be anywhere near the iPhones. Also specifically regarding craigslist no phone has ever sold for its unsub price here except for the iPhone. I buy phones regularly and when the lumia 900 came out it was around $400-450 and the GS3 the same. I expect the same from the 920.

Ahhh, I didn't factor in buying a used Lumia 920. That, I guess I could see happening. So far the word is that the 920 is going to be priced about 10% higher than the GS3 was when it was brand new and off contract. At least that's what they've priced them at in Germany and Italy so far.

I have yet to buy the iPhone 5, still currently using the iPhone 4s. I was debating on getting either the iPhone 5, GS3, or galaxy note (strongly considering),

I got the iPhone 5 last friday. Software wise other than the UI, the feature set is quite the same. Though iPhone 5 is smoother but thats to be expected as its new and the Gnex is 10 months old now. Battery life wise the iPhone 5 blows it out of the water. Literrally my Gnex looks like its running on a single AAA battery and the iPhone on a 9V lol. I have EVERYTHING left on the iPhone GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, same settings for email and push screen on 50%. While my GNex I leave Wi-Fi, GPS, bluetooth off and screen brightness pretty much on the absolutely lowesst setting. Today I have used the iPhone 5 for 1:45 and had the Gnex on all of 5 mins the iPhone 5 has 86% left the Gnex has 70% left. I need more phones to have the battery life of the iPhone stock. Mind you my GNex is on verzon but I have a barebones custom rom with an undervolted kernel.

The only fault in battery life I've found is when there is a weak signal. I live in a dead-zone and without my Airrave (femtocell) I get 1 bar of VZW Roaming if I'm lucky. My iphone's battery was decreasing every couple minutes doing nothing except idling because it was searching for a Sprint signal.

Also for some strange reason playing "Cut the Rope" (simple physics game like Angry birds) burns through battery surprisingly fast...

Until today though I had Location on, LTE on (no LTE service in my area, I just didn't think to turn it off) WiFi on, BT on, and cellular radios on, and go something like 17 hours (with multiple hours of music and ~5-10min of calling) before it was at around 25%

I kept mine - but it has become my least favorite of the iPhone series.

They really dropped the ball going to with edge on the aluminum. I know this is an overused term - but I think this phone will be widely seen in the next five years as the one that Apple "Jumped the Shark" with.

"Jump the shark" means the the rest of of products will decline until the iPhone is just an obscurity or completely ended. I don't think Apple will let that happen. Granted the aluminum back was a bad idea, but I don't think this will spell doom for the iPhone.

I 've been on the iPhone 4 for 2 years now and it's been great. I decided to try out android so I picked up an s3 and used it for 2 weeks. Definitely not likening many things about it and it's going back to the store tonight.

Going to go for the iPhone 5 instead it's just all the little things about the Samsung phone and android that I don't like over the iPhone and ios.

The s3 is a good phone, but it just doesn't work for me the way I expect from 5 years on ios.

I even rooted it and loaded jelly bean but that only helped a little.

Keep in mind I work in an I.T. dept and pretty much can change phones whenever I want (if I had to pay for my phones I would just get one and stick with it for two years).......

I got an iphone 4s in January and really liked it initially. The OS worked very smoothly and rebooting it once a week keep it working pretty much perfectly. After a few months I had to say I somewhat became bored with iOS, although that wasn't that big of a deal. What was becoming a serious issue was eye strain for me with the small screen that the 4s has. At 42 years old I was constantly looking under my glasses just to see the small screen clearly.

When the S3 came out I got it and still have it. The OS isn't as stable as iOS but it's still decent. Can't wait for JB for it. The screen size on the S3 is absolutely perfect for me and I don't think I will ever use a phone under 4.5" again. Even my wife who is a die hard Apple person is impressed with my S3 and is considering switching to it, for the Android OS and more importantly the much larger screen.

With all that said, I would not hesitate to switch back to an iphone if they ever release an "iphone XL" that was 4.5" or larger.

That's really my only complaint so far is the screen size, I liked that my galaxy nexus was big but I found now that I have used the iPhone 5 that comparably the iPhone 5 is easier to use with one hand, but harder to read.I think anything bigger than 4.5" compromises the ability to use the phone well on the go and anything smaller than 4.3" is just too small. I will keep my iPhone 5 and get the Lumia 920 as well. I really just wish the iPhone was 4.3" or so. Otherwise the new iPhone has been treating me well, I got 5hrs of heavy usage on Wi-Fi and LTE today and about 13hrs of standby so far and it has 70% left. Thats stellar when I consider my Gnex had a 2100mAh battery and the iPhone has a 1420mAh.

I was not aware the "Jump the Shark" had a proper definition.

Let me rephrase - Apple has had a near hegemony in the mobile phone space for several years. The iPhone 5 will, I think, be viewed in coming years as a point of demarcation where this dominance started to fade.

Not to say they are going the way of Palm/WebOS - they will be a major player in the coming years. However, as a definer of the mobile space, they are losing their position.

Cons:

No tap to scroll to the top of the page (Android problem)
Keyboard blows.
Gaming capability is sorely lacking
Speakers are junk

How is scrolling to top an "android problem".
I presume you're talking about the browser, and will presume again that you've never heard of Dolphin.

"Keyboard blows" is subjective. I find the stock ICS kb way better than the iOS kb, and the extra screen real estate makes the key spacing even better.
On top of that, you can install 3rd party kb's.

This is coming from a GNex owner, not a SGS3.

Lol keyboard is definitely subjective. I have always liked the iOS keyboard more than any android keyboard to date. This is coming from A owner of the EVO, Droid X, Droid 2 Global, Thunderbolt, GS2, and the Gnex. I find the iOS keyboard on the my new iPhone 5 much much easier to use than my Gnex overall. The only real thing I miss is the thing to select where you want to type where iOS you have to hold it over and slowly try to move it the ICS/JB keyboard you just tap on the text and move it around.

Sure may not be an "Android problem". But it definitely is a shortcoming for the SGSIII out of the box. It's laughable you have to change so much just to get the right feel, when Apple does it right out of the box.

I love my SGSIII, but I'm not a blind android fanboy.

You must have something wrong with your setup on the nexus. You may be undervolting too much. My nexus literally drains nothing when idle and I have the verizon version as well.

Ive got the GS2 and I have to say I cant wait for my contract to be up.
The thing is a pain in the ass.
cons:

1) Battery life with the big screen is reallllly short.
2) Had to wait forever to get Android 4.0 on it, they had released 4.1 the day before I got 4.0. Really pissed about that since a big selling point was that the GS2 would be getting the latest update as opposed to the GS1. This is what convinced me to go back to Apple.
3) 4.0 is garbage. I get some pretty awful lockups to the point where the only thing I can do is take out the battery.
4) terrible built in speaker
5) Memorycard reader no longer reads memory cards for whatever reason
6) The USB connector on the phone has gotten kinda loose and it makes getting the charger to work a huge chore. If I dont put it in at just the right pressure it just wont register.
7) The phone seems to randomly decide to charge or not charge. I still can't figure this out. I use the same charger everyday but sometimes the battery stays at 0%
8) Could never get my pc to identify the phone. so as a result had to resort to using Samsung Kies over wifi to transfer my photos
9) Samsung Kies software is so damn slow and ugly and a pain in the ass to use
10) The signal just randomly craps out for no apparent reason. Then switches to roaming even though im in the same spot.
11) The 4g/3g interaction is a huge clusterfuck. I always keep the 4g off cause of the damn battery life but when Im actually using my phone and want a speed boost, it takes freaking forever to connect to it. And if I happen to have anything in the background using the 3g signal while trying to connect to 4g, the phone stays in a limbo state between the two and I get No internet connectivity at all. I've learned to clear Ram to fix this but good grief....

pros:
1) makes for an awesome gps navigator on my dashboard
2) lots of screen space

Gotta think some more on the pros, but anyway definitely going back to Apple. I truly miss the "just works" operation

Which version of the GS2 do you have? I've had zero of those problems on mine. Definitely not my favorite phone, but for the year I used it as my main phone it was nice. It really sounds like you got a lemon that slipped through the cracks.

Today I have decided to return my iPhone 5. I was delighted on launch and it is a very satisfactory phone but I can't help but feel as though it is missing something. I think my main issues are that I am envious of the larger screen sizes on other devices and also the iOS software of which I am starting to get too familiar with.

Not to mention the fact the edges scratch. I feel one of the major draws to the iPhone is it's aesthetic appeal yet I have to put a case on it for protection.

I am thinking about trying a Windows phone and if I don't like that I will probably re-purchase the iPhone 5.

Anybody else coming to similar crossroads?

I feel your pain. You were missing Android and it's customization options :p

I am running 4.1.2 on my GS2 with no problems at all and at least 1.5 days of battery life with moderate use.

You sound like someone who didn't take the time to tweak things on the phone. I can't speak towards how the phone runs stock, but with some slight tweaks and the upgraded OS, its very nice.

I am running AOKP 4.1.2 Build 5.1
