Why is the nexus 10 so ugly?

I read the specs and with having lots of flights planned for the next several months I was tempted to pick one up to watch movies on the plane. Then I saw all the picture. What is samsung/google thinking? Are they so scared of getting sued by apple that they changed their design strategy to "if we make it ugly enough, surely we won't get sued"?

State of tablets:
Apple: beautifully designed hardware, software closed and evil as sin
Nexus: great internals, good software, ugly as sin
Surface: hardware looks good, but ms seems to want to inch software to be similar to apple's closed minded mess
Everything else: garbage

I can't help but feel the nexus 10 would sell better if they put less pictures of it on the website.

I mean would it really have been that hard to just stretch out the nexus 7 to a 10 inch form factor? I would actually buy it if it looked like that.

Well the Nexus 7 is made by Asus and the 10 is made by Samsung, so probably.

Looks are subjective. I don't mind it, then again I also don't find the need to show off my electronics.
I like the look of the iPhone, but really don't care for the iPad.

But in this case, it looks like garbage. I don't know what they were thinking. Waste of specs when it looks butt ugly :p

Function over form? Would you rather want a pentium 1 PC that looks amazing rather than an i7 that looks like shit?

I would rather my impressive hardware looked equally impressive. Of course internal hardware is more important, but there's no reason why great internals must be paired with a crap exterior.

Yes, there are many tablet makers that all make slight variations of the same basic shape. Most look better than the nexus 10.

As Apple has shown us, when it comes to CE sales, looks are pretty much everything. The general public (which excludes anyone on [H]) is going to walk into a store (or look at an ad) and decide based on the looks, music, how 'cool' something is and what their friends are using.

Google has no clue about this, but Samsung knows this, which is why the GS3 marketing campaign was so successful. It baffles me how they could make this.

Again, do you need to show off your electronics?

I don't care at all what anyone else thinks when they look at whatever I'm sporting. I want a tablet that I think looks nice for MY personal satisfaction.

I'm not saying what you're suggesting doesn't exist. Obviously people buy things like electronics with a certain fruit logo on it, cars, homes, and lots of other things for the sake of what others will think - but a lot of other people like to buy nice looking things because they simply enjoy the quality.

I agree with you, OP. Frankly, I think the Nexus 7 was kinda ugly too...

My opinion? Everyone's drooling over thin or almost no-bezel monitors. I understand you need a place to grab the thing, but look at the new Nexus 4, or even the Galaxy Nexus for that matter - practically no bezel on two of the sides. I think this contributes a lot aesthetically.

Personally, I really like the way the Surface looks. But as was mentioned above, this is a very subjective matter and you'll get a wide variety of responses.

Hmm, personally I don't think it looks bad. Bezel is a little thick, but I like the all black look (hate the silver iPad design). Then again, this is from someone who still carries around my HP Touchpad, along with my iPad3 (company device).

Also, at least for me, once you slap a case on a tablet, what it originally looks like doesn't matter that much anymore. My HP cover for my touchpad covers up the back and sides of the device, so all you see is the screen, and the Targus "portfolio" case that I got for my iPad to hold business cards and stylus doesn't leave much of the tablet visible either (not to mention the Otterbox case some of my coworkers got).

Now, if you're one of the types that keep your devices "naked", then I could see there being a little more concern about what the device looks like...

Again, do you need to show off your electronics?

Do I need to show off my electronics? No, but I do I want a visually appealing electronic in my hands when I use it? YES.

If I pay big bucks for something, I want it to be both good at what it does and visually appealing.

Too bad this isn't it.

Because it's $399, and even more emphatically is not positioned as a "premium" product in pretty much any shape or form?

This *is* a premium product in every way except the looks and price. A little bit more effort in design and they really would have a huge hit, like the Nexus 7. And if it had been made by Asus, it would've looked just like a bigger Nexus 7.

Which means a hell of a lot better looking. Samsung isn't the best when it comes to designing these things.

Gotta love First World Problems. I for one don't really care how it looks - I care how it functions.

I'm tempted to get a Nexus 10 because it looks to be an awesome tablet.

I actually kinda like its appearance. How it feels in my hands will likely be a completely different story.

This. I hope it gets a keyboard/battery dock though. I have been wanting a Transformer Infinity Pad just for that to use at school and stuff.

If you guys spend $30,000 on a car, would you care to get one that looks good?

Performance and interior appearance are more important to me as that's what I see and interact with more often. I'm not interested in impressing anyone else.

This... though for me it is more performance, features, and interior comforts. Don't care how it looks so much. For example, I find cloth seats much more comfortable than leather, so I would never buy a leather package. I'm much more of a "function over form" type of person. But then again, I would never buy a 30k car. I'll let someone else take that initial cost hit and pick one up used instead. As long as it gets me from point A to point B and doesn't fall apart in the process... sounds like a winner!

Aside from myself I know almost no one who does not put a case on their smart phone or tablet. So at the end of the day the looks and thin mean absolutely nothing to almost everyone else. But yeah it isnt very good looking as far as bland rectangles called tablets go.

It's ugly because it was designed by Google. Everything they make is ugly. They have 1 designer for the entire company.

Anyways I really don't think the Nexus 10 looks all that bad myself. Sure, there are a bunch of questionable design choices, but most of those are mandated by corporate now that they lost a billion over it.

Yeah, I had the same thought looking at the photos. I loved the looks of the Nexus 7. The specs sound amazing, but the looks put me off. Oh well, I can't afford one and don't need one anyway... :p

I think It's pretty ugly. We here at [H] care for raw power over looks it seems. However, the average consumer very much cares what their 400-700 device looks like. It might be one of their top deciding factors when it comes to something that's not the iPad.

That's really not true.

If you showed up with pics of your case and your fan holes in your modded case were a tad too large, [H] would rip you apart.

I distinctly remember this happening to a guy who had a great computer otherwise: it was very powerful for the time and had a lot of nice sound damping gear inside. The guy didn't mind as it was very silent and ran cool, but the rest of the thread was pretty much just bashing this superficial error.

These days there seems to be less emphasis on case modding but you've been around long enough to remember the days when it was just as prominent as overclocking and cooling.

There is nothing wrong with wanting something you pay money for to look nice. Again, obviously internals are way more important, but we are not talking about a zero sum game here. Things can be made with great internals that still look nice. Choosing between a nexus 10 vs an ipad I would not hesitate to choose the nexus 10. I would just be disappointed with the fact that my great hardware looks like it was designed by an elementary school class.
