Hey guys.

I need to upgrade my switch to something that has 24 ports. This is for home, simply to sling media around the house, etc. So 3-4 computers, boxes, AVR's, HTPC's, blah blah blah - just the usual stuff.

I was looking at the Trendnet TED-S24DG and the Netgear JGS524 (both are under a couple of hundred bucks). The cheaper the better to a degree - rack mount is preferrable. Both are unmanaged. Jumbo frames?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

So, now I have a good idea on what switch to get. :D
My next question:

I need to buy a new router for my network (using DIR-655 for last 4-5 yrs). Would like to move to a dual band product.

As I live in Canada and would like to purchase VPN to rid the geo tagging and enjoy US media content. I plan to buy a wifi router that supports VPN to accomplish my goal.

So, from modem, to router, then to a 24GB port switch, devices include 3 wired computers, tvs, boxes, players, blah blah blah, etc.
Placement of the router is in my basement (has to be as this is where all my network/modem/server rack). I plan to also purchase an AP and place it on the 2nd floor of my home (2200sq ft) for coverage in the house.

Question is, once I add the VPN to get US content, there will be times when I want my own PC to NOT be on the US VPN.

So, based on the above which dual band router under $130 and how much for the AP? And how do I setup it up so that my personal PC and be on and off the VPN?

Right now I can get a E4200v2 refurb for 60 bucks from NC$X? I was looking at Asus N66, but perhaps its too much for my needs?

Thanks

HP 1400 series or if you want a little web management the Netgear JGS524E or use it unmanaged.

FYI... the Netgear JGS524E is way more reliable than the JGS524. Netgear's MTBF documents list it as having almost 20 times the usable lifespan.

Lastly both switches I'm recommending are lifetime warranty.

Be aware that the cheaper non-managed switches are often several smaller switches in a single box with a single 1gbit "fabric" so while you may be able to get full gigabit speed with simultanious transfers from ports 1 to 2 and 13 to 14, if you tried to do full speed transfers from 1 to 13 and 2 to 14, you'd likely only see half speed. Probably wouldn't too adversly affect streaming video as that's generally only 6-20Mbps for an HD stream, but if you ever wanted to do something say with windows 8/server 2012's switch agnostic link agregation, you might run into issues.

That is good to know, did not know this.

Although on second look at that one it does claim 32Gbps switching fabric so that's probably not an issue. Rule of thumb is if you're buying a switch and can't find any info on the switching fabric, well, buy a switch where you can find info on the switching fabric.

Also seems a bit odd that an unmanaged 24 port switch would need cooling fans as evident from the enlarged picture (can see screws on 2 corners of the fan hole in the front indicating to me that something is actually mounted behind it not just they're there for optional fans), don't think I'd call it a deal breaker just something to be aware of

I like dells unmanaged switches. Cheap and work well. I have a 2824 at home.

This is a rebadged netgear with out the SFP's. It is strikingly so.

I would go with the MPrice switch just because Mprice is a good business with pretty good service.

I was shocked at how low the MTBF on some of the Netgear Switches are. The prosmart switches that end in "E" are actually their most reliable switches under $1000. The models ending in "T" are about 30% less reliable but still miles ahead of their older model switches. I've thrown aware enough Netgear switches to know what I am talking about.

I agree. I only use Cisco now. High MTBF, outstanding support, well if you pay for a TAC agreement, and just damn skippy performance.

However I am going to be getting into Juniper, JNCIS, as well as adding some hardware to my home and office and clientele networks. A Cisco/Juniper hybrid so to say.

As far as netgear goes, they really are a cheap company. I have some of their switches at some clients of mine but that was only because they wouldnt allow me to choose cisco at the time. I really dont think the words enterprise and netgear should even be in the same paragraph.

As far as netgear for home products. Nothing wrong with it. In fact I urge the OP to look at getting a used GS724T from fleabay. Could be had for $100 bucks and its still a very capable switch for its intended use.

OP I would jump on this pronto. So much better than that unmanaged switch.... you never know when you are going to want to set the duplexing or link speeds manually, setup a vlan, you name it.

I am using a GS108T (8 port gig smart) in my living room to connect all my devices to my main Cisco 3750E via a dot1q trunk. Works great. Have separate vlans for guest and traffic control etc... might not be managed but smart is still much better than a dumb switch.

Thanks guys, Lots of Good info.
Looks like version 3 of the GS724T is silent - no fans - bonus!

I live in Canada, trying to find a 24GB port pro curve under $200 is tough....
But I do like em.

I am currently using a Trendnet, no issues, I had a fan go bad in one and their support to have a new one switch was actually pretty fantastic.

Im using a PowerConnect 2824 at home. Supports SNMP, 802.1q, LAG, STP, etc. Paid $160 shipped for it refurb from ebay.

Also has (2) SFP ports for gbics.

My dell 5224 does alright, I had to replace the fans in it though. I got it off ebay for cheap with busted fans.

HP Procurves are awesome switches. They have managed and unmanged ones, obviously managed are quite a bit more expensive.

1810-24G

Running a 16 port unmanaged one (1410-16G) and it's been rock solid with as good of performance as I could have asked for.

I love my NetGear PROSAFE GS724TR switch. Rock solid for years. I'm not sure what the current model number of this switch is though.

I'm using a GS724T at home. It works no major issues, but I can't e.g access the management IP from a tagged vlan.

It has a lifetime warranty maybe I should try to RMA it and see if the newer version fixes the issue.

I have the same issue on my GS108T v1. I have no idea how to get around it tbh.

Assuming these are not layer 3 switches (nothing I could find suggests they are), have you set up your router to route between the management VLAN to these others? Have you set up a proper trunked link or other connection from the switch to the router for the management VLAN?

I'm on vlan 1 tagged through the wifi ap in the same subnet. I can't ping the switch from the router that's on every vlan. Same setup works on real cisco or linksys... management vlan = 1 and whatever's on that vlan tagged or not can access the switch.

Oh yeah. These are just cheap netgear stuff. Probably bugged. I havent seen any fw update for my switch in years.

Thanks for all the info.

I updated the Opening post with an additional question on wifi routers and VPN's.

Why put the wireless router in basement?

Wired router in basement.

POE AP on 2nd floor.

ZyXEL USG in basement
Unifi upstairs
D-link green series are always been fine in houses or Zyxel ones as well

I have a GS724T in my home. Love it. The fan is no louder than the 3 PC's that sit around it. So I never notice it.

Nice switch if you want web managed switch w/o the cost.. I got mine for $160 after rebate. They run rebates 2 times a year on their networking gear. It should be coming up again soon.
