iPad mini is coming out obviously. supposed iPad midstream update.

Mac Mini got an update to Quad-core

Might be a big'ish iMac update too.

I'm really only looking forward to an iMac update this time. I could always pop an SSD in mine to breathe some additional life into it, but I'm expecting Apple to do that for me with this refresh.

I hope there is something exciting about the Mini. Google is supposedly dropping a 10-inch tab on Monday. I might get both of these as the Surface RT doesn't hold any interest and I really don't need an ultrabook running Win8.

iMac: You can now choose what Apple is calling a Fusion Drive. 128GB of flash storage mixed with 1 or 3GB HDD.
Yep, saw that one coming a mile away.

3rd gen iPad owners just got screwed, hah.

Good news for everyone who waited. :p

Not really a big deal with the iPad. It looks like an excuse to add another device with the new connector and add LTE for more markets. The iPad 3 is snappy enough I don't think the processor will make that much of a difference.

You could wait ten years and there would still be a new updated product on the horizon.

So yeah, your post is the dumbs.

Have fun getting "screwed" in 6 months if you buy the iPad 4.

I was really hoping the iPad mini would have been a 7" device. But nope, they went bigger and made the bezel the wrong shape (where do I put my thumbs when I'm reading a book). I also found the comparison the nexus 7 a bit foolish. Their only advantage once you exclude screen size is they have the option of a cellular radio in higher end models w/o contract which to me is still a killer feature.

As for the iPad3 upgrade...saw that one coming and it was a good move on their part. Everything else was "non magical" on every front. Didn't see one thing that made me "nice job Apple on truly raising the bar".

Looking closer at the iMac, there's one fairly major disappointing aspect here: the standard hard drive in the 21.5" is 5400 RPM and seemingly non-upgradable (at least not by Apple). You can opt for the 'Fusion Drive' only after you move up to the $1499 price point, and there's no option at that price point for flash-only, which is what I'd prefer.

Moving up to the 27" lets you go for one flash option: 768GB. There are apparently no other options. If you only want, say, 256GB: tough titties.

If the hard drive is quasi-user-replaceable in the new model as it is in current models, that's fine (I don't mind getting my hands dirty), but if not, that basically puts a bullet in this machine for me.

Typical Apple condescending attitude. The iPad mini has a lower resolution and ppi than the Nexus, so of course they wouldn't mention that. In Apple's world materials are the only thing that matter, which is why they spend so much time talking about aluminum vs plastic. Priced it as high as they could because they know people will buy it no matter what.

The new 27" iMac looks interesting with up to a 680m GTX 2GB. I wonder if it will still be possible to upgrade with a 2.5" SSD and keep a 3.5" SSD as well. It seems to me the flash is probably going to be a lot like what they use on the Air and rMBPs.

The 13" rMBP looks overpriced by a little bit compared to the difference between 15" models. $100 higher premium but less storage than its 15" counterpart gets.

I'm really disappointed with the Mac Mini not having discrete graphics though. It's the one thing that has really kept me away from trying one again. I was tempted with the last refresh but only having a dual core kept me away that time...

I'm definately considering a 16GB iPad Mini WiFi to replace my HP Touchpad.

genius marketing.. however im a fan of mac books they are pretty solid.

Isn't this what it comes down to? The new iPad Mini does have a larger display than the competing 7" tablets. Nice materials are nice, but the real hook for consumers is iOS and the plethora of apps that have been developed for it.

iPad mini intelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you’re intentionally interacting with it.
...

ipad mini would have been a hell of a lot more compelling with a retina display.

We sure did, and I will officially never buy an Apple product ever again. No more Apple phones, no more Apple tablets. They obsoleted a closed-system product, giving it the odd-man-out processor from the mini and ipad 4 SIX MONTHS AFTER RELEASE.

Fuck you, Apple. Surface/Android here I come.

android is fine but those surface tablets so far look a bit too expensive for my tastes.

I can't tell of you're serious or just trolling. Or a completely uninformed consumer.

Seriously? So they should have just held off on releasing an A6 iPad for another 6 months just to keep you from getting angry? If they had it ready to go, why not release it? Your iPad is still faster than the Mini which only has a A5 processor. It's hardly "obsolete" when Apple is selling other devices running inferior hardware. I am a little confused as to why the iPad 2 is staying in the lineup at the same pricepoint though. It looks looks like a complete ripoff at this point when compared to the Mini and the 4th Gen.

+1. And the fact that it weighs .68 lbs. Lighter than the Nexus (which really feels good to hold). I think I will get one just to play games on and free up space on my 3.

The same early-refresh hysteria happened as a result of the iPhone 3GS (if I'm not mistaken). It didn't make sense to me then and it doesn't make sense to me now. People getting mad at a company for releasing newer, better products, and vowing to never buy products from that company ever again.

It's absolute lunacy.

iPad 1, 2 and 3 were all a year apart.

That said, even my parents barely noticed anything going from iPad 2 to 3, so this probably isn't anything huge either.

And now we know why they dropped the numbering... so people who don't know any better can be sold the 3rd gen since hey it's only 6 months old and it's called the ipad!

4th gen is a nice tab, but I do feel sorry for the folks who dropped 6 bills 4-5 months ago thinking they'd keep with the 1 year development cycle.

If you want to have the latest tech, the only winning move is not to play.

That said, I'm considering replacing my 3GS with the LTE iPad mini. Just gotta get bigger pockets.

i dont understand why people get upset with tech companies releasing new hardware? They have to to stay competitive and push the envelope, I have gadgets that are considered old because they've been in service for about a year but I enjoy them and get my daily use out of them and they don't get functionally worse the second something better is released.

software however, is a different issue haha.

Why buys anything thinking about "the 1 year development cycle"? And no one needs to you feel sorry for them.

No, they should have never released the iPad 3 if they planned for it to have half the power of a flagship device six months later and take the iPad 3 off the shelves. That's a huge slap in the face to people who bought one within the last 6 months, especially since they have never released an updated version that quickly before.

Everyone is under this misconception that the A5X is somehow faster than the A5--it's faster solely to power the extra resolution. The A6 is allegedly twice as powerful as the A5X. It is totally conceivable that there will be apps out that the iPad 3 will not be able to run shortly given the power jump. The iPad 3 has a number of problems that Apple simply ignores or claims are not issues, (WiFi dropping, overheating, etc.) and instead of fixing them, they just release a new version and fuck everyone else.

Apple being secretive about all this bullshit is the reason people get pissed. No one expected an iPad refresh other than the mini, and they come out and say (literally) that the iPad you just bought last month is now obsolete. I'd rather buy products from companies that have published and clearly defined road maps. It feels like gotcha shopping. Like you were tricked into buying something because they hid full knowledge from you.

The other problem is Apple's notorious use of OS updates to force a product into obsolescence. Jumping up the release window (and double the processing power) makes me think the iPad 3 won't be long for this next iOS.

EDIT: Looks like some Apple stores have realized what bullshit it is: http://9to5mac.com/2012/10/23/apple...c-MacAllDay+(9+to+5+Mac+-+Apple+Intelligence)

So now Apple is going to release a new product every time they -
1) use a new display
2) use a new cpu
3) add some tiny hardware feature

I guess its good business practice when you have people lining up to buy every single incremental upgrade and every blog ready to declare it the best product ever made.

:D

Wow over-react much. Your tablet is no longer the best after 6 months so you are going to jump ship to a tablet running Android/Windows that won't be the best two weeks after you buy it.

That sure makes a whole lot of sense.

that's pretty much how the company runs

I have absolutely no idea. I bought a new iPad because of what it was and what it does, not about how it was going to make me feel for a year before the next one was released.

It's amusing that the same hardware enthusiasts who clamor — often irrationally — for new hardware at the expense of everything else are susceptible to becoming so emotional when they're given an opportunity to get better hardware. Curiously, you don't see people complaining about the frantic pace of hardware advancement on the Android side of things, where new high-end phones and tablets are released on what seems like a three- or four-week cadence. There, it's praised for giving people options (new, fast hardware good!). When Apple speeds things up, it's a "slap in the face" (new, fast hardware bad!).

Actually that is complete nonsense. Apple usually has the longest time between product upgrades of any of the Hardware companies. Releasing Approximately one Tablet/year, one Phone/year.

This was a special case, of bringing out a new product and aligning another product in the family.

As soon as the iP5 was released, I was certain there would be a an updated full size iPad with the new dock connector and I thought there might be an A6 as well. There were leaks of the full size iPad case with the new connector as well. It only makes sense to put the iPads in synch.

So you think this has nothing to do with the Surface launch? Apple had no reason to release this now instead of the yearly iPad refresh in Spring 2013. They could easily have announced the mini now, and held back iPad 4 for next year.

What are you talking about? The post you and I were responding to, said nothing about Surface.

It was saying Apple releases updated product any time there is any kind of HW feature available. This clearly isn't the case. In fact it is the opposite of reality, as Apple is usually criticized for taking so long between releases.
