Does anyone know if it is possible to downgrade back to iOS 5 on an iPhone 4S?

If you didn't jailbreak your phone and install Cydia before you updated to iOS 6 then no.

So if I buy a new iPhone 4S with iOS 6 preinstalled, I'm screwed?

Nope. Buy a used one that's still on iOS 5 if you want it.

I did have my iPhone 4 jailbroken on 5.1.1, but in the process of erasing all my content to get ready to sell it I upgraded it to iOS 6. How do I downgrade? I tried for hours this morning and couldn't get it to work.

I tried stitching the SHSH blobs onto a copy of the 5.1.1 ipsw file, then using redsnow to boot into pwned DFU mode, but it still wouldn't accept the new/old firmware file.

Did you add the couple of lines to your hosts file to point to Cydia's servers rather than Apple's? Haven't tried downgrading from iOS 6 but that's what you used to have to do.

And why do you care if you're selling it anyway?

Ah, that's probably what I missed.

Just thought I'd make it a little more desirable if it had a readily jailbreakable version of iOS on it.

I dunno, depends on who you're selling it to. I've sold several iphones over the years and a lot of people think jailbreaking ruins the phone or something. I've had people say "I'll offer you £20 less because it's been jailbroken" so be careful how you market it.

If you have a 4S and it was on 5.1.1 and jb w/ saved SHSH's you can reinstall 5.1.1 whenever you want. Once you upgrade to 6, you're stuck there permanently no matter what you have saved.

Unfortunately once the 5.1.1 window closes, redsn0w’s 5.x downgrade feature will no longer work. Most A5+ users will not be able to downgrade. So if you’re an A5+ owner up at 6.0 when the 5.1.1 window closes, you’ll be stuck there without a jailbreak for now.

x2

the A5 SOC doesn't contain geohots limera1n exploit, and thus, can't be downgraded. Any A4 and below (AFAIK, haven't paid much attention to the 3GS in a while) can be downgraded as long as the SHSH files are saved.

yup. This is likely the problem. Either that, or it's stuck in restore mode. you can kick it out of restore mode with redsn0w (or tiny umbrella) AFAIK

Right, but he's on a 4S which means that he can't downgrade no matter what server he points to.

he was replying to the guy with the iPhone 4 that couldn't downgrade his firmware, not the OP

Whats wrong with iOS 6?
Still wondering about this...

I have a iPhone 4s for my work phone. Used iOS5 for a few days and after a co-worker showed me just a few features of iOS6 I promptly upgraded... Never looked back. It's a great phone and the battery life still lasts until the end of the day with me constantly checking work e-mail and making calls.

Cant be Jailbroken yet (at least not publicly available)

For some people this is a major issue, inability to add a "quick menu" that lets you turn on/off verious radios, no tethering, less customication, etc.

Personally my concern is with Tethering - unless I JB I cant use an app like MyFi to tether (though I might have found a solution with tether.com but nobody here or on hofo has ever used it apparently...)

Also there's a distinct chance that some apps, specifically "in house" apps for certain businesses, hospitals, law offices, etc, may not work with iOS6 (though apple seems to have tried to minimize this, it's always a risk)

Tethering is built into iOS. Take it up with your carrier, not Apple.

There is no compatibility problem between iOS 6 and previous versions. They're shown at full resolution and work the same way they have before. It's up to developers to test and make sure, but Apple didn't throw anything at them that impedes their apps' ability to work.

None of this indicates anything "wrong" with iOS 6. It simply indicates that you might want a different device.
