A "defining fight" of the industry? I think Mr. Schmidt is being a little over-dramatic.

Google Inc Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt expects more than a billion mobile devices around the world to be running its Android software within a year, intensifying a battle with Apple Inc that he called a "defining fight" of the industry.

Well he is right about one thing, Google and Apple are the super powers. Microsoft wants to be, but isn't even close. Blackberry? LOL.

Hey ... at least this gives you two different corporate overlords to choose from until Google becomes our single lord and master someday :D

microsoft is super power in their own way. google tried to be super power with chromebook but failed. believe it or not windows is going to stay here.

Windows 8 is like china, the biggest developing company/country with a trillion people/dollars, they may be behind the times currently, but are quietly working hard in the shadows and making progress at an alarming rate while the current top dogs are wasting energy duking it out among themselves.

In the end more competition benefits the consumer, but either way once your locked in whoevers companies ecosystem, you basically become their bitch.

Microsoft has the biggest userbase on pc, so if they can successfully merge that with mobile then world is their oyster. Buying one app or program that runs seamlessly across all my devices like pc/phone/tablet etc will be a game changer. I'm not a big fan of win 8, but it will soon be forced on the masses thru oem hardware if MS plays their cards right, google n apple will be scrapping it out for crumbs in a decade or less.

Well I was thinking of mobile devices, not the desktop.

Schmidt has always been rather full of himself making anything Google does as far more important than it usually is. Basically, he's your average CEO.

I don't think its overly dramatic.

While around here everyone still loves their big watercooled overclocked PCs. But everyone besides us (hardcore gamers, overclockers, etc.) wants tiny & convenient. ie: the future is tablets, phones, book sized PCs and docking stations for our phones to be used as our portable PCs. So Google and Apple are in a war for the future of computing devices. (ultra ultra portable)

The old demigods Microsoft AND Intel are going to be left out in the cold unless they both get something equivalent to S3/OneX+ (current top Androids), iPhone5 like NOW!!

Microsoft needs a Windows 8 phone that can actually compete with iOS6 and JellyBean.
&
Intel needs a smart phone/tablet chip that can be competitive with the dual & quad core arm processors that are out now in those devices.
