My desktop at work has just been replaced with a Dell Optiplex 390. I have legit local admin rights. It's an i5 quad with 8GB of ram so I can't really complain about anything but I've run into a snag. My old machine was a self build that I ran 3 monitors by simply using the onboard plus a cheap video card. The new machine won't run both a PCI express video card and the internal video at the same time.... at least according to our IT goons. The bios is password protected so I can't verify that but I'd like to avoid that battle for now.
Can anyone suggest a USB video adapter that doesn't suck? This would simply be for a third display to constantly run diagnostic data on. It's about as non graphic intensive as can be and would be low resolution like say a 17" LCD running 1280x1024. I just want clear smooth video, not 3D. I think a USB adapter would be the "less drama" route.
The machine does have an available PCI express slot that's not in use. Is there a low profile (and cheap) video card that will drive 3 monitors? None of them will have display port and I'd rather not pop open their case to do something but it's an option.
