I have some Mac memory and I was looking to buy some to match. The modules say MB982G/A-C on one sticker and MN982G/A-C/QP05. In looking I've found modules that just end after the G/A. Some that have the -C, some with the whole string. I've also found other that have a -AX. Are these all the same? Are they wildly different? They all seem to list PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 ECC DIMM, are there other differences.

The funny thing is its not actually for a Mac. I bought a Supermicro server board and memory from another member here and it came with 24GBs of ECC RAM that was apparently originally for a Mac. Was thinking of filling the other 6 slots on the board, or maybe 3 to start and wanted to make sure I got something that was not going to cause a conflict.

As long as they have the same timings they should work fine.

What exactly do the chips themselves say on them? The model/brand they were sold under really makes no difference whatsoever.

The one thing that you do need to make sure to match is the bank configuration. You can get single or dual ranked modules. Making sure to get the same ranked modules is what is going to matter most.

Here's what's on the chips.

I was hoping that it didn't have heat spreaders (heat insulators/soakers) on them.

In any case, this is the cheapest I could find that should specifically work with what you have already. $30 per 4GB stick.

Newegg also has some, but it is $35 per 4GB stick.

Although, just going by specs, these $28 per 4GB sticks would probably work as well.
