Been waiting for a deal like this. In for a 2nd kit for 16GB goodness
Hmm... in the market for a RAM upgrade (from 4GB). To jump on this or wait for a deal on 16gb?
The problem is, is it worth spending the extra dough for 16GB when I am realistically not going to need anywhere near that for the foreseeable future. By the time I actually need that much RAM, it is likely that I will be able to get 32GB or even 64GB for that price.

In this case I have to agree, you are over thinking it. In this case, if you have the money, I would just go for it since you will definitely benefit from it.
I, on the other hand, already have 16GB of this ram in 1333 speed and it works fine. I have been toying with the idea of picking up faster ram but everyone I asked says I would see no difference.

Does ivy bridge OC better with only two slots populated or does it not make a difference? Just curious because of where the memory controller is located.

8GB should be plenty if you only play games. If you're in 3DS Max, Photoshop, Unreal Editor ect. I would want 16GB.

Depends on your OC and your mobo, tbh.
I have my 2500k running at 4.5ghz with 4x4gb sticks of ripjaws. Doesn't seem to effect my overclock

Do you mean compatibility with your current ram, or if the 8gb rip jaws is compatible with your current motherboard?
Yes it should be compatible with your motherboard. There's no way to tell if its compatible with your current RAM unless you know what RAM is currently in it. Can you look at the order history of wherever you bought it from to find out (assuming you bought it online)?
The 4GB of ram I have now (2 x 2GB sticks) are f3 DDR3 1600 G. Skill Ram. From what I remember the ASUS M4A87TD board I have has 4 slots for ram. So, do I buy 2 x 4GB of ram and then keep the ram I have now, for a total of 12GB of ram? By the way, can you even mix and match different sticks of ram? 2GB, 2GB, 4GB and 4GB of ram?
Or, do I upgrade to 16GB of ram? I do some photoshop work once in a while. Will this ram fit my motherboard?

Depends on the motherboard. Some play nice with mixed sets, some don't. Having the latest BIOS helps most of the time.
Do you even use 4GB? Unless you get some pretty extensive Photoshopping/3D Design/AutoCAD/etc. going you probably won't go past 4GB.
There's that too. $60 is a good deal, but why spend money at all on something you wouldn't use? In my personal Photoshopping/Rendering experience, you'll run out of CPU power with that Phenom X4 before you run out of 8GB of RAM. Other people's projects may differ.
I'm amazed at RAM prices, this is a great deal.
It's not going to be overboard and given the price of ram these days "why not?" is right. I notice a speed increase running photoshop going from 4gb ram (when I had to RMA my ram) and 12gb of ram. But be careful with mixing ram. There's also a risk there. I installed Ripjaws X alongside Ripjaws (same timings) and it fried all of the ram. Had to RMA everything.
8gb is usually the minimum recommended for photoshop. I disagree with your point about running out of CPU power before running out of ram. Photoshop is notorious for being a ram hog because once it uses up ram for a task, it doesn't give it back. Try working with a few layers, go back in history, do your layers again, and take a look at your ram usage. I bet it went up quite a bit.
