iPhone Case Stops .50 Cal Bullet!

Video isn't popping up for me right now. By "stopping" do you mean someone threw a .50 cal bullet at it? ;)

No, somebody shot a .50 BMG at close range, I would say 15 yards - 20 yards away and it survived the shot. Slow motion and all that included.

Bullshit.

Any thick ass piece of steel/titanium can stop just near anything.

Now if the case actually LOOKED like a case and just not some big thick ass metal brick attached to the back I'd be impressed...other than that this gets the "JoeUser Thumbs Wayyy Down Award"!!!

Why would I want that thing? I'd have to store my phone in a back pack or some luggage. It wouldn't fit in a pocket.

Besides seeing no real purpose to the case, it worked.
I watched the video, and as far as I can see, the cracked screen and unresponsiveness are from it hitting the ground, not from the bullet.

Who would buy the case anyway? Dumb. -1

Involving guns and ammo? +1

It's a wash. :p

Agreed.

Phone still died though, so even though the bullet did not go straight through, it failed as the phone is dead.

So you buy a $650 case that only one side is actually bullet proofed and the shock of the bullet even if it isn't a .50 round will likely crack the most expensive part of the phone to begin with , the screen. Top that off with you can't use any of the external buttons except for the "home" button as well. AND he didn't even shoot the part of the phone that is actually more vulnerable than the rest of the bullet proof backing.

For the price of that bullet proof case you could just buy another iPhone as well. I get that its cool that such a case can be made but why even bother offering to make them when its not really fully bullet proof and costs so much? You could probably buy a bullet proof vest and just slip your iPhone behind the bullet proof chest panel and you'll benefit from bullet proof vest yourself. It may not stop a .50 but its cheaper than buying a case that is only 50 percent bullet proof.

TL;DR Cool concept , completely pointless unless the sniper who wants to kill you hates Apple fanboys.

the three second clip of the kid at the end is more entertaining than any of this guys videos.

next i wanna see a chinese style paper amour made out of ipads. See if they can survive swords.

Secure the phone rather than just balance it on a table and we'll see what happens. It wouldn't surprise me if it still didn't penetrate, however I'd imagine even a thinner case (say, 1" thick) would "deflect" the bullet, although it's effectively just deflecting the phone instead.

I actually hope he revisits the case and sets it against the hill or somehow vise-mounts it and see what happens.

I actually tried to go through a few dead/unwipeable hard drives simultaneously with a 7.62x39 this weekend, and was surprised how little penetration it had... maybe I can get a .50 and write it off as a business expense?

.50 BMG on hard drives... For some reason I think I've seen this one before. Probably on [H]

Just as a secondary question... doesn't that seem like a terrible location to shoot a .50? It looks like the bullet could just continue travelling into the valley, especially with a slight upward ricochet... Maybe the ground is sloping more uphill than the video makes it appear, but that looks careless.

Impressive as that is, why would anyone need or even want a bulletproof iPhone case?

Has there been a rash of iPhone assassinations I am not aware of?

Well, in all fairness, a .50 BMG is hitting with roughly a bajillion times more energy than a bullet from your average handgun, so I'd gather the phone would survive a round from one of those pretty easily.

Totally stupid. Like JoeUser said, if it actually looked like a case I might care. As is, it's just a large brick of metal attached to the back of an iPhone. Nothing cool about this, and I can't believe this is actually a product that a company is trying to sell (at $650 no less).

Secure it on some hipster's belt. :p

Nah, too flimsy. Beyond the fact that they're probably wearing some used "vintage" belt, I'd imagine their calcium intake is rather low so their pelvic bone would probably collapse under the shock.

Props to the case manufacturer for not putting a hole in the case for the Apple logo!

I expected something interesting, all I got was some retarded brick looking case that renders the phone impractical. All of that for only $650! Let's throw in some $10,000 cables while we are at it.

Hard to argue with that logic, you make a good point. Though it might make for a nice moving target. That is if they didn't just curl up in the fetal position. Fight or flight baby! :D

lmao.. I want that case just to confuse the security monkeys at the airport when I travel..

It's a strong case, no doubt. I am sure it would be a slightly different outcome if the device was backed up against a wall (or a person's body) where the bullet would do more than just knock the case down.

I want a video from the iPhones perspective. When it can survive the shot and provide the video, Ill take one.

It can stop a .50 cal bullet, but a 3 foot drop from the desk to the floor will shatter the screen. :)

It's a novelty item. Stop being so whiny about it.

+1. What's with all the whiny bitches on [H] at the moment.

Oh, it has iphone in the title, my bad, continue being whining bitches

But seriously, what did you people think it was gonna be when it's trying to stop a .50 BMG round, a sleek slimline case that completely deflects 18,000 joules of energy

I think, perhaps, based on foot pounds of .50 cal at that range...(??Likely over 5000?? Anybody know?) and the knowledge that it takes about 60+/- foot lbs of force to break a sternum....I propose if you had that in your breast pocket when it was hit by a .50 cal that you would be PULVERIZED...now of course if you had your body armor on and a flack jacket over it, then your phone and you were shot at a more typical distance for a .50 cal...like 1000 yards...then, well...you would have a great story ...if you managed to avoid the second round that is.

Not impressed unless I see proof that it can stop .50BMG SLAP rounds (Saboted Light Armor Penetrator).

aside from the note-to-self to only use SLAP rounds in the future to combat hipsters, this guy has really, really terrible shooting technique. watching that physically hurt me...

You'll be able to use your iPhone as a blunt weapon to fend off attempted robberies.

The iPhone screens don't survive being dropped at their normal weight...adding 5 pounds for gravity to glom onto I'm sure doesn't do much for the survivability rate.

...and one other thing...

They should include a pair of steel toed boots so you don't sever your toes when you drop it on your foot.

I'd be more impressed if they would have used a basic API round. What a completely useless project.
