I'm looking for desktop hardening guides for both WinXP and Win7. I've already got guides from CIS, stigs, Microsoft and a few universities like MIT. We're looking to formulate our own guide, combining all the best practices into one and applying them against the HITRUST CSF. My biggest problem is that all WinXP info I've found is for SP2 or older, plus I want to make sure I'm not missing any important information from another source I haven't thought of.

Hello, anyone? I'm new to the security industry, with a background in support, so perhaps I'm missing something obvious. I've been spending a lot of time the last couple of days reading through various documents out on NIST that are really good, but like I said in the original post, I just want to make sure I don't miss any hardening guides that may have information I need. I work for a very large company implementing a desktop vulnerability program and the first step of this is looking up desktop hardening to implement for our images. Need to get the ball rolling, but still doing as much research as I can at this point.

You've read all about policies and profiles? Have you read DIAN6?

I've read a lot about policies and profiles at various different sites, in various papers. I haven't read, or heard of, DIAN6, so I'll check that out... ;)

I believe I have that, or at least it's incorporated into another doc I have, but thanks for the link regardless. I emailed it to my work address so I can check it out tomorrow, along with the other guides I'm researching

Another good one, thanks. Still looking for more if there are any outside of these.
