ASUS PB278Q 1440p IPS (PLS Panel)

Ive seen a australian guy from asus explaining that the panel will feature full array backled. Do you guys think this is true? Isnt that technology very expensive?

Here's the video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdlSY4youIQ&playnext=1&list=PL1FBB325EFD454FB9&feature=results_video
The comment about the full array backled is @ 0:35
If its true then that should help quite a bit with backlight bleed and panel uniformity

Win!!!

This monitor keeps looking better and better

I'd figure the full array would refer to simply having more leds on all sides rather than having per pixel leds. But that's just my guess.

Full array tipically means that the LEDs are behind the LCD and not on the sides.

Well, the Aussie review very specifically said full LED backlighting to eliminate any 'bleed spots' as he put it and later mentioned at around 4:25 that there were "absolutely no bleed spots anywhere on the panel."

But I have yet to find any other hard reference to it being a 'full' array though. If it was, I'd expect that to be a very bold bullet-point on spec sheets.

What they do list is a 5ms gtg response which should be on the slow-end of TN panels, eh? Though I guess the 60hz refresh would be the real gaming issue? Considering what I'm using now, any of the current options would be light-years ahead so it's probably not going to be a big deal for me.

It has an asus 2-way replacement policy for 3 years similar to HP/Dell so its def worth the $2-300 extra over the MC Auria/Nixeus with their 1 year warranty that you have to pay shipping for (I would have lost $$$ shipping faulty ZR24Ws back last year).

Might gamble on this from TD since they are the only ones not charging CA tax and atleast in my experience their service has been quite reasonable, not as as good as amazon for sure but def responsive, including paying return shipping on a faulty motherboard for a full refund.

It does not use full array LED back-lighting. Only high end LCD TV's have full array LED back-lighting, people, be realistic. You can't seriously think even for a second that the CHEAPEST 2560x1440 display yet has fancier back-lighting than the rest...and these will have back-light bleeding

Manufacturer provided response times don't mean anything, in reality most IPS panels are way faster than 5ms TN's since they usually don't have proper over drive while IPS panels do. The recent 2560x1440 IPS compete with the best 60hz TN's in terms of actual measured pixel response times. 60hz is only an issue if you want a 120hz-144hz TN or are upgrading from a high hz CRT.

Neither Linus's video or the Aussi AsusROG video are reviews, they are paid advertising.

I'm holding out for a proper TFT Central review on one before I make my decision.

I have lost my faith in reviews due to the variation from unit to unit, often the review units are cherry picked samples with no BLB etc. while most of the actual units for sale may have significant flaws.

NCIX (NCIX has the 35$ 0 dead pixel/defect exchange) New Egg & Memory Express (Canada Only) all have the same pre-order deal (free Asus Vulcan Headset, 130$ value), and Memory Express (best price matching policy around) has a better return/exchange policy (7 day return window, no restocking fee, 30 days exchange).

@Canadians

If you get Memory Express to Price Match NCIX you can get it for 686$.

I might get one of these for review (real world unit review vs. possible "cherry picked," review units), if any one is interested in buying mine (assuming it is good and I get one) send me a PM. I will, of course exchange it until I get a defect free unit first. You pay what I paid plus shipping, you end up with a good unit that is properly calibrated via the OSD (with an i1 display pro colorimeter) as well as an ICC profile.

I was willing to give the rev--er uh, paid advertising the benefit of the doubt but I knew a full LED backlight array should be at a far higher price-point... I was just hoping Asus pulled off a miracle of money grubbing :p

That said, it's been years since I've even looked at any monitors seriously (I'm still using two Dell 2007FPs for chrissakes) but In reading over the forums for the past couple days it's obvious I'm not the only one that needs more than a paltry 1080 vertical pixels. Since I need the real estate for work as well as gaming now that I've gone through the methadone MMO detox, the 27" variety seems to be the best size for my current setup. Now it's just finding something that doesn't suck ass.

(To NCX)
I'm only an honorary Canadian (at least, according to my Canuck friend and his brother) so I s'pose I can't help a great deal on review samples, but the Asus, so far, seems like the best hope beyond the massive QC problems plaguing 2713HMs and the bleeding issues of the S27A850D which your review almost convinced me to pull the trigger on. This is still assuming Asus has produced a backlight casing around the same panel that doesn't bleed like a fat guy in a razor factory or sit around in the digital waiting room like...a fat guy in a razor factory?

Anyway, considering what I'm 'used' to dealing with, I can't imagine most modern, proper IPS panels are any slower than the ~16ms+ lag times I'm dealing with on 2007FPs, so it should all be IQ and QC beyond that.

This monitor is pretty much my last hope :( If this one has alot of blb then im gonna buy a cheap ass monitor and just forgot about the whole thing. Im sick and tired looking for a decent monitor.

With HP taking forever to ship me a new ZR2440W, I went ahead and pulled the trigger for a pre-order at tigerdirect about $715 shipped - (hopefully) some cashback through a popular site. Working as a sys admin on a single monitor is tough. If this turns out to be decent, the HP will do good duty as a secondary monitor. Worst case scenario, if TD support does not come through (they have so far, touch wood), I'll be out a few bucks in shipping.

I wonder what the actual release date on this is. Newegg has it as 10/08/12, and B&H Photo has it as 10/01/12 (expected).

damn for the price of that i could have two of something else...But i can't deny that it looks hot! :)

So B&H is showing the free headset as well. I wish Amazon would say whether they have the same deal, I'd much rather take my changes with them if I'm going to order one.

Here are some users talking about there experience with this monitor. So far no talk about backled bleed problems ^^

Pfff i wish they release the monitor allready! I got the money and i wanna spend it but only if its a quality product :)

Some german stores have the display in stock!

Does anyone have a picture of this panel in a dark room with 80 to 100% brightness on a black background?

No, and why would you ever want to use a non VA panel at such a high brightness? Blacks are already relatively greyish on IPS/PLS displays with @120cdm/2 brightness in a dark room, at super high brightness (200cdm/2+), in a dark room the black levels become "grey levels."

Just got my replacement ZR2440W out of the blue - brand new with Aug 2012 mfg date, seems to be much better than the older one (May mfg date) and is pushing 1350:1 contrast ratio at 145 cd/m2 brightness versus 1150 of the older one, def due to lesser glow and leakage. Measured using i1DPro at 6500K. Still some lower right glow but def less noticeable.

Now not sure if I will keep the pre-order for the PB278Q now, working on one screen is a bit tough but constantly swapping screens is a big pain too. This still looks very tempting though.

It's all about luck. I ordered mine from amazon. I hope I get a decent one with less back LED bleeding. Can't be too picky. If its bad, I am gonna return it and get another. If the 2nd one is bad also, I am just gonna order the Samsung S27B970D.

I will see what kind of luck I have.

Even the S27B970D suffers from backled bleeding. And it cost wayyyy more.

I'm quite curious about the new Asus 1440p monitor as well ... is it understood that they are sourcing their panels from Samsung (being they are the PLS screen designer?). Has anyone heard whether or not Asus is being careful to avoid some of the backlight bleed issues certain of the Samsung monitors have had?

...

Also, and because these two competing monitors are mentioned in this thread a bit ... specifically regarding bleed issues ... I figured I'd share a bit of my experience over the past few weeks with both of the two Samsung 1440p monitors.

I've just spent the past month trying to satisfy my OCD like need to find the perfect 1440p panel ... I started with a S27A850D ... then tried a side by side comparison with a
S27B970D ... and have now decided to stick with the S27A850D.

I started with a S27A850D as it met all my particular needs...having a VESA mount (I've used an Ergotron Neoflex for ages and am addicted to it), SEMI-glossy finish and an industrial design that I totally dig.

My first S27A850D had the worst backlight bleed I'd ever seen in a monitor. I was appalled and took it back and exchanged it. You can see that in-line link to view an actual dark room image I took...

My second S27A850D had/has a nearly 100% perfect screen, with complete uniformity and only a super light (think MAJOR OCD, here) strip of BLB at the top (which I can see if I really hunt for it but I'm still not sure if its bleed or just my brain jacking with me). Really, the panel in the second 850D is *that* good.

But, having a strange disorder that won't let me sleep at night until I've exhausted all variables surrounding any significant purchase .. :) ... I simply had to try the 970D as well and so I bought one of those too in order to compare with the 850D.

And what I found is this .. yes, the 970D that I picked up *did* indeed have a slightly better panel than my 850D ... hard to put a description to it other than it just looked more "even" overall in regards to backlighting. Truly splitting hairs at this point as both panels are what you might refer to as bleed free but the 970D just seemed a bit more refined in it's backlighting as a whole, perhaps having something to do with the factory calibration...perhaps my imagination, who knows.

That said, I found the overall picture quality to be identical between the two monitors...in fact, the 850's SEMI-glossy screen pops *just* as dramatically as the 970's (really, both, the best whites I've ever seen) but without the dramatic reflective quality of the 970.

In the end, it only took me 10 minutes with the 970D on my desk to know I would be returning it and keeping the 850D: the 970's stand is horrendously flimsy, how Samsung could release it with that wobbly bit of plastic is beyond me. Also, the lack of a VESA mount is further of a deal killer for me. Once you've had a monitor on a decent mount like an Ergotron or other...swinging it here and there as you like...pivoting it...swiveling it...I mean, it's hard to pass up in future monitors. Maybe it's just me and my particular work/play habits, but I'm *always* finding some reason to adjust my monitor (moving from imaging/video work to gaming and then to movies..all require a different vantage at my desk and therefore I'm always needing to adjust my screen for optimum viewing. The stock 970 doesn't tilt and nor does it swivel, making it exceptionally difficult to adjust throughout the day. Again, ridiculous on Samsungs part. Had the 970D had a VESA mount, I would have kept it...even though, truthfully, I appreciate the aesthetic approach of the all black 850, personally.

Anyway ...

I'm also very much considering ordering one of the new Asus 1440p monitors today as well as it's design is nearly identical to the 850D and it has all the technical points I need.

Should I do so, I'll update here with some screenies and what not. Plus, it's retailing for about 200 bucks less than I paid for the 850D ...

But still .. I'm tickled pink with the 850D ... just watched the Avengers BluRay on it last night and man ... shoosh. What a screen ...

;)

My wife may kill me, but I just ordered a PB278Q off of Amazon for Saturday delivery. They had one left in stock and I grabbed it without thinking. I have a U2412M I purchased two weeks ago and the AG coating slightly bothers me when working in Word or coding. If this one looks better, the U2412M will be going back. I'll post some backlight bleed pictures once I have a chance to set it up.
