It would seem just over half the people that took this survey prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8. I know you are going to have an opinion on this one, which do you prefer?

A Windows 8 help and support site, asked more than 50,000 Windows 8 users what they disliked and liked about the software and found that 53 percent liked Windows 7. One quarter of respondents said that Windows 8 was their favourite version with the fast boot and shut down feature being the most popular feature.

Not surprised. It's a large adjustment - maybe it will turn in the next 5 years - but it won't for Windows 8 anytime soon.

I won't go that route. Never have, never will. It's the closest resemblance to an OS trying to turn towards the Apple OS-X that I have ever seen.

I may get Windows 8. The fast boot is impressive. Add Windows 8 to a SSD, now thats even faster

it takes around a minute for my computer to completely boot up and about 40 seconds to shut down with an SSD. instantly would be cool too but not worth me switching OS's imo.

does anybody get a new windows before SP1?

hope this isnt another vista

I haven't bought a SSD just yet, but I thought these were supposed to have very quick boot times. My normal computer with a mechanical hard drive running Windows 7 can boot up in about a minute.

I think Windows 8 will be brilliant...

...on tablets.

I may even get one.

For now, I'll be sticking with Windows 7 on my desktop though.

Metro is a downer most of the time on a desktop. The rest of the time (the 99% when you're not seeing metro) it's smooth sailing, better than Windows 7 IMO. The little tweaks they've done are pretty awesome such as the improved task manager, copy dialogs, spanned monitor taskbar without Ultramon, etc.

Atleast OSX still has traditional menus (not the garbage ribbon), icons and windows. I really look at windows 8 and shake my head in disbelief that MS really thinks that it's going to be successful. The only thing good about it is the stuff you can't see or interact with.

Did they take any input from the community when developing this turd?

It makes linux a lot more attractive as a desktop/workstation OS

MS made a mistake that will cost them lots of M$. They should have released 8 with the same type of UI as 7 and then released a GUI pack containing Metro. Then people would have said, "Hey check out this new UI, its pretty sweet". Instead MS is like, "Too bad, this is what you get and you will like it".

Sticking to Windows 7 for my desktop. I tried out Windows 8 public release and was not a fan at all.

Plus, judging by Microsoft's trends for operating systems:

Windows 3.1 (Good), Windows 95 (Bad), Windows 98 (Good), Windows ME (Bad), Windows XP (Good), Windows Vista (Bad), Windows 7 (Good), Windows 8 (...Bad?)

I'll wait for Windows 9. ;)

the answer is to hurry up and implant monitors in desks.but at a slightly inclined level. then we could have startrek! woot! :)

20% also said XP was their favorite OS.
The article and forum post also point out that the "Windows 8 Surface received more positive votes than Android tablets and the iPad." Maybe it is fundamentally more appropriate for mobile devices

I'm able to download Windows 8 due to my affiliation with an academic affiliation, I'll give it a shot at least on one of the computers here, and I am withholding judgement until I do so. I also appreciated the other poll results which gives more insight into the OS's features which I haven't been able to explore:

I almost never change operating systems until SP1 unless there is a compelling technical reason to do so ... when XP first came out it was buggy and most people hated it (after SP1 everyone loved it and that is when I upgraded with no issues) ... when Vista came out most people hated it (I actually upgraded to it before SP1 since I wanted to run a game in the new DirectX and since I had a relatively new system and lots of RAM I didn't have any issues) ... when Windows 7 came out I waited until SP1 again as Vista was actually working for me ... the only consideration I have on Windows 8 is that since I have Win 7 Ultimate I am not sure whether it will permit an upgrade vs a clean install ... but if it permits an upgrade I will likely jump in at SP1 again :)

If you look at the actual survey results, it seems nonsensical to me.

The most voted disadvantage was price... Windows 8 looks to be the most inexpensive version of Windows to date.

Other "Weaknesses to be Improved" were:
Price------------------------------------------------------------------------------35%
System requirements---------------------------------------------------------26%
Incompatibility -----------------------------------------------------------------25%
Windows always freezes or crashes----------------------------------------20%
Two styles- Metro and classic desktop------------------------------------18%
Uncompleted Apps------------------------------------------------------------18%
No option of reboot/shutdown/sleep-------------------------------------17%
Other-----------------------------------------------------------------------------12%

So #2,#3, #4, and #5 are essentially equivalent to Windows 7.
#7 is blatantly false.

Which Windows OSes have you used before? (multiple-choice)
XP: 58%
7: 75%
8: 26%
Other: 17%

What is your Favorite Windows OS?
XP: 20%
7: 53%
8: 25%
Other: 2%

Also interesting is that 26% say they have used Windows 8, and 25% say Windows 8 is their favorite Windows OS.... Sounds more like 96% prefer Windows 8...

Also looking at the features liked about Windows 8, Metro and the App store get voted as more liked than disliked (comparing % between the liked table and the disliked table.)

"Most Liked Features of Windows 8"
Fast boot and shut down-----------------------------------------------------56%
Easy installation----------------------------------------------------------------50%
Internet Explorer 10 -----------------------------------------------------------35%
Restart/Restore capabilities-------------------------------------------------28%
More apps, such as Mail, Calendar and People apps --------------------26%
Windows Explorer--------------------------------------------------------------25%
Windows Defender------------------------------------------------------------24%
App store------------------------------------------------------------------------23%
Metro UI--------------------------------------------------------------------------22%
Snap Multi-tasking--------------------------------------------------------------21%
Multiple Monitor Support -----------------------------------------------------21%
SkyDrive--------------------------------------------------------------------------19%
Charms Bar-----------------------------------------------------------------------13%
Other------------------------------------------------------------------------------10%

End of the story: Faulty headline, website misinterprets its own poll.

Windows XP X64 was the best OS Microsoft ever released. it's been down hill since then and Apple now can thank MS for giving them a new user.

The part that really gets me is this "One quarter of respondents said that Windows 8 was their favourite version with the fast boot and shut down feature being the most popular feature."

So people who like Windows 8 over Windows 7 turn their computers on and off how many times a day? Is it productive to turn your computer on and off all day? I can see where this may be useful on a laptop. Just amazes me how this is the most popular feature for the people liking Windows 8.

Gotta be honest, I haven't tried Windows 8. That being said, I don't plan on leaving Windows 7.

XP X64 is pretty awful compared to Vista/7/8 x64...

did you honestly say Vista was better than XP? MS messed with the UI, make the OS less intuitive and set up by default where is annoys teh hell out of you when ever you click something asking if you really wanted to do that... seriously XP was a god compared to vista, and 7 was Vista done right, and SHOULD have been a free upgrade for all vista users.

8... don't get me started...

If the way you're doing the math is true, the only people that like windows 8 are people who have nothing to compare it to, and basically 100% of the people who have tried something else, like that other OS better :p

Until windows 7 64bit was released.

I was a loyal XP-64 user since it was released. I used it until windows 7 RC1 64 bit came out. Once I tried it I never went back.

i really like it . I mean yes you have to get used to it but shortly after it is fine. On a tablet it will do fine and really nice for desktop..... Power users/ admin users know how to adjust it for custom use so why cry over it.

no, he said that vista 64bit was better than XP 64bit. XP 64bit's driver support was a nightmare and the OS wasn't nearly as stable as it's 32bit counterpart. Vista/7 64bit trump it in every way.

Vista wasn't a bad OS by any means, it was just a resource hog and a little pokey. With a nice rig and an SSD, it ran great.

I find this obsession with the boot times a bit amusing, Even XP is not THAT bad... Besides how many people really shut down to power off their PCs... Resuming in XP doesn't take long at all.
I just don't see it as a relevant feature (Of windows 8) it stopped being an issue for me even with XP.
I do understand the concept of ssd's though, but the benefits do not stop at boot times of course. (which is why I am getting an accelerator drive )

I waited a year or more before using vista cause 64bit sound and graphics support wasn't there quite yet. I'll be passing windows 8, faster boot time who cares, I reboot like a few times a month. And even if I do reboot its one time out of the day. Its hardly a reason to switch.

Fair, even typing that I knew it was a stretch :p

SSD + Win7 = win.

I can only improve my startup so much since I'm forced to either hibernate or full-power-down (RAID card doesn't like Sleep mode). Even if I use Hibernate, the RAID card still has to initialize, so there's a guaranteed 15 seconds there.

I laughed a bit at this

The UI messing was great imho, the Start menu, as kept in 7, is far superior to XP and its predecessors, the OS is plenty intuitive, there were a hell of a lot less wizards which is a big fat thumbs up for me, and you are aware that UAC (The thing bugging you for permissions to do everything requiring elevated privileges) can be disabled, right?

I am one of the few that actually enjoyed Vista, I am aware I am in a minority there, but XP was a dog compared to Vista, especially when it comes to 64 bit support

7, I am in love with. I haven't used 8, I may buy it on release just because of the low price, but use it in a virtual environment from my server. I can imagine it will be a dog so far as a desktop OS goes when compared to 7, but pretty good when paired with a Windows Phone, which I have, or tablet.

Primarily as a gamer, the views of the industry aren't too great when it comes to Windows 8 either:

I'll agree driver support sucked, but at that time, 64 bit drivers weren't generally being produced so you can't really blame the OS for lack of drivers. as for stability, I've found it as solid as a rock, it's based on a server OS for crying out loud...

Vista was terrible, I had a awesome quadcore system vista would BSOD at random intervals, and XP/XP X64 was solid on the same HW.

I liked the idea behind Windows 8, but I just don't like how rigid it is when it comes to customizing...and no, I don't believe I should need some sort of 3rd party suite to customize things either.

Win 8 is still too new and hasn't even gone retail. This survey would be better conducted after Win 8 has been on the street for 6 months.

Ala Xerox's Tabworks.. That was a pretty sweet shell.
I think metro will work out... what are people going to do Linux? I read about half baked drivers, now that worries me a bit..
I can imagine if we got android desktop version that might suck for MS.. eh just talking.

Seems like they ought to actually release Windows 8 before they start asking such questions...
