When it comes to servers for home use, I always build my own over Dell or HP. While their form factors are nice, a 1U server is just... louder.
I start with a 4U case and a high quality, high-efficiency PSU. And then drop in a ton of undervolted 120mm fans for airflow and low noise. Then add in a no-frills motherboard (from Supermicro or Intel), server class CPU and whatever the memory and disk requirements dictate.
The price typically comes out the same, but I end up with a more power-efficient and quieter server. Of course it's a 4U form factor instead of 1U and no warranty is included...
Plus building my own keeps me abreast of component configurations as well as giving me upgradability options that a make-to-spec server doesn't have.
Of course I'm hoping to score an old PE2950 III / MD1000 / TL2000 trifecta in the upcoming months from work so take everything I just said with a grain of salt.
