The Official Borderlands 2 Thread

Do I miss a lot playing on ATI card? :) After seeing some PhysX videos levels look fun but empty.

Unfortunately yes. When I saw the initial videos I was concerned that it would be a constant fireworks show but the particle effects are very well done and add to the gameplay instead of being gimmicky.

I chucked my first singularity grenade last night and it was awesome. The explosions feel so beefy and destructive with the physx effects.

I can't imagine playing this game on anything BUT "high" PhysX settings. Every time something happens where a lot of particles fly around, or banners get torn up, I make sure to remind my friend (who's running on an AMD card) that he's missing out. Then he gets angry and 'threatens' to buy an nVidia card.

I usually try to explore and do as many side missions and stuff as I can before actually doing main missions.

Same here. I always make a deliberate point of not doing main story missions until all side missions are done.

I think I figured out my stuttering was not related to disabling texture streaming, but to allowing my game to be joined openly. Not sure if my upstream was choking or if the matchmaking system is whack. It sure seems like it takes too long to find a game.

Up to level 19 on Axton, and I can honestly say I still have the same gripes I had at level 1 many hours played ago - the inventory/shop UI is just a joke. They went to all the trouble to make the game more PC friendly from BL1, but they actually made the inventory UI worse. You try to sell something with the mouse, or god forbid scroll, and the whole things freaks out. I am constantly afraid I am selling the wrong thing.

Not sure where I stand on instanced loot. There are pros and cons, and when I see someone I am playing with bolt directly to the boss I just downed to ninja stuff, I get mad. Then again, I love chilling in town while people play the slot machine for me.

Yeah, I have definitely noticed some stutter/lag related to the online component. I generally try to keep my game set at LAN, but when me and the GF play over the LAN I will get stutter that I don't get in LAN mode by myself. Also, even set on LAN, last night while playing solo it popped up with something like "Connection to Steam lost" and then soon after it restored connection, but during that period there was this weird stutter. Definitely related to the connection.

I love the full PhysX in this game, it looks awesome. It's cool when a Siren will Phaselock someone and all of the surrounding particles/liquid/cloth objects will get sucked toward it.

I haven't tried PhysX at High on my GF's machine, but it will run well on Medium with a GTX 570 at 1600x900 (everything else maxed). I hope they release a patch or drivers soon to fix some of the random performance issues, though.

Another small gripe I have is that even though explosions and shotguns/rocket launchers feel beefy, ARs and pistols just feel...meh. Sound-wise, mostly. With a lot of pistols and SMGs (small-caliber weapons basically) it sounds like you're firing a potato gun or something. I like when the weapon sounds have a bit more "kick" to them.

I started with a Radeon 6850 on my 8 GB E7300 @1080p and have just popped in a 660Ti. To what settings should I change?

Try max settings, see how that runs in general, and in firefights. Perhaps try dropping down some settings then, not sure how that CPU will run with most settings up.

Had my first issue last night. I went in to kill Warden and he almost immediately killed me. When I respawned, I went back and he wasn't there but the "Kill Warden" box wasn't checked, either so I don't know what happened. I finally gave up and turned it off. I'll try it again today and hopefully it will be fixed.:(

I had a game going with 4 buddies, all of us chatting on TeamSpeak. This was the game at it's best, a highlight in my gaming experiences.

I'm not terribly impressed with Borderlands 2 overall. UI and menus are a huge step back and just as glitchy as the last game. Graphics are basically the same with some minor improvements. I like the physics additions but they are largely superfluous eye candy with all major props still being static. I like the increased difficulty. I do not like the new drop system -- B1 was already too grindy, there's no reason to make good items even rarer except to please grinders and they've got plenty of MMOs to ply their trade in. Story is still hilarious and awesome, even if it all feels very deja vu... meh.

Maybe I was expecting Borderlands 2 to actually be Borderlands 2 and not a huge Borderlands 1 expansion pack where they improved almost nothing. My bad.

edit: and low ammo forcing ammo scavenging constantly breaking up the pace and flow of gun battles. I do not appreciate having to scour areas for ammo while a gun battle is raging. It was a fucking batshit stupid idea.

Well personally of the few issues I have with BL2 they all seem to be related to items they totally redid for BL2, such as the inventory system and UI.

I'm not sure why so many companies, and people, think that a sequel needs to be ground breaking to be any good. Personally I loved BL1 and would have been happy had BL2 simply put together the new story with minor tweaks and/or improvements.

As for the lower ammo drops, part of it is the lower ammo carry capacity but I think the biggest part is adding cash and weapons to the ammo crate item list. It used to be that finding a few ammo crates would normally load you up real well on ammo, but now I find more crates with money in them instead of ammo.

Is there any difference, other then performance, if you run it on a system with an n-vidia GPU and on another with an AMD GPU assuming all the settings, including the PhysX level?

My rig is:

i7-930 @ 3.4 GHz
6GB RAM
Radeon HD 5970 2GB
256GB Crucial SSD
Win 7 premium

But I'm able to play BL2 at 1920x1080 with all the graphics on high, AA on 8X and PhysX on medium (haven't tried high yet, but I will this weekend) and the game is completely playable and I've never seen even a hint of framerate dropping low enough to be noticable.

Im playing an evening game with two friends they are both Assasins and I'm a gunzerker. Game is infinitely pissing me off because we as a group can't find shit for my gunzerker. I'm stuck mostly with bottom level weapons, but on my side game I'm playing a Commando and it's just like each goddamn weapon out does the last. I'm getting more green and purple machine guns/shotguns than anything else. Driving me up a wall. ended up giving a bunch of guns to a friend so he could give them to my Gunzerker in the other game.

Some good .ini tweaks I'll have to try in that GeForce guide. Especially regarding the shadows.

I think I'll turn off DoF as well...not a huge fan of the effect in the first place and it seems like it has a moderate performance hit.

I've had similar experience in regards to my Commando using ARs. For the longest time I was using some crappy 40 damage AR, yet I started up a game with an Assassin and within like 5 or 6 levels I had found equal or better ARs in that game. Seems silly.

What are you looking for your gunzerker? It can pretty much effectively use any weapon in the game.

Are there any high-capacity magazine rifles, that don't fire rockets? I'm playing a zero, so I don't need any, but I haven't come across any that I would want to use for a commando/gunzerker at all...all the high damage rifles seem to fire rockets, which are terrible. Or do the commando/gunzerker skills make up for the low capacity magazines?

I seem to remember in BL1 at higher levels finding 60+ capacity rifles that were basically machine guns. Haven't run across any yet (level 32).

Bandit manufacture weapons have higher capacity so keep an eye out for them. I think I found a ~40 mag size rifle once.

The way I play it I'm the tank for the Ninja's who run the outside so I need decent SMG's and MG's. I about punched my screen the other night finally found a sweet Fire SMG, threw it on the ground to give to my friend to give to my Gunzerker and the Fackin fin slid right out a transport gate. AAAAAAH.

I think ideally I want three SMG's/MG's One shock one Fire and one Coro. With that I can cut through anything while my buddies snipe and melee.

We had a talk about it the other night like maybe I should switch my Commando whos doing great into the main game considering it's unbalanced with two Assassins but we agree - why circumvent the challenge? The Zerker has a lot of nice Perks so I'm gonna stick with it.

Full disclosure I still don't know much about the game. We're all only lv10-12(adults with jobs) playing maybe an hour or 2 a night.

I've seen some purple/orange guns posted in the GB forums with like 150+ round magazines. They're pretty rare, though, and most ARs seem to have like, 15-20 rounds which is crap.

I guess with Commando at least you can dump skill points into reload speed if you need to.

I wish you could set the amount of players for your game in the network options. I feel like 4 player games open to the public become a mess. With only one or two other players I feel the game is more manageable and less of a clusterf*ck. What I typically do is shut it down to the public after I get the desired amount of people, but sometimes i forget.

The only AR's I find with that low ammo usually have an element benefit or scope maybe. Most have been around 30-60. I get the impression peoples looting is wildly different in every game.

SMG fall out of the sky for me. :p I suggest spending your money at the slot machines, or at the tip jar. ;)

there is a bank in sanctuary that you can store items to use for other characters if you need to.

I understand that, but is there a difference graphically from say an nVidia GPU running PhysX and running it via the CPU at the same setting?

Also I was surprised who smooth everything runs at high setting with PhysX at medium as all I've heard is how much running it, on GPU or CPU, causes massive framerate loss so I figured I'd be lucky if I could run it on low, but at medium everything is smooth as glass.

My understanding is that the only difference is processing speed. Run on a GPU, PhysX will have less impact on framerate. Run on CPU PhysX will have more impact on framerate.

Video of PhyX on CPU
Looks the same as GPU calculated PhysX to me.

Does your commando have the pre-order relic? I keep hearing people having great luck with drops, but I get shit and I wonder how much it has to do with me not having that relic.

nah the relic is kinda crap. i used it for about 4/5th of my first play through. I am now about 10 lvls into my second and i can't see any difference

This game handles alt-tabs better than any game I've ever played.

That's funny, a lot of people have been complaining about a framerate drop to 1 FPS that stays until you restart the game if you alt-tab. I haven't seen that personally but I do know that if I alt-tab I will get a huge framerate drop (down to 15-20 maybe) for a little bit after going back into the game, but it stabilizes after a minute or so.

Also, regarding the Vault Hunter's Relic, it's only really good if you use it in co-op with everyone having it because the effect stacks, so you can be getting 20% better chance of rare loot with 4 players all having VH Relic equipped. Too bad shared drop mechanics suck ass for public games.

Wot. The first thing I noticed about this was how shitty alt-tabbing was, as bad as Skyrim and even almost as bad as Source-engine games. The first time I alt-tabbed I was forced to end the process because I couldn't get back in, and since then I have to do that shitty skyrim trick where you tab back in, then tab out again, then back in before it expands from the taskbar.

Also thanks for the heads-up on the willowengine tweak for PhysX, runs perfectly and looks great.

Damn how are you level 18 at that point? Did you hang onto the quest for a while or something? I think I was like lever 12 when I did that mission.

you must have skipped lots of side missions as well, I was around the same level here too.

i may be interested to get this game eventually, should i go PC or 360?

No brainer, PC. But then again, pick whichever system you have more friends playing on. This game (1st one included) is PAINFULLY boring playing solo. It's meant to be played with one or more people in your party, otherwise it's just like any other crap.

No way! 40 hours in, 38+ of it solo.

One nice thing about co-op with at least one other person is that one person can draw aggro on enemies with the door-sized shields so the other can run up behind them with a shotgun. :)

I've alt-tabbed dozens of times and never had issues
