BugASalt: $30 Fly Killing Shotgun

What I want to know is how much did it cost him to get to this point. I always wondered about how much it would be to get a prototype design done in China.

Years ago I did some starting research about getting a part for inline skates made. Calling up local US companies they said it would be in the $50k range to get the single mold I needed made. I can't imagine him spending less then that.

That's awesome!

Needs to come with banana clip holder though for extra salt, it would just add a final touch. :p

I don't know about the plastic gun bs but when I was younger (39 years ago) I got hit by a farmer that had a 410 loaded with rock salt and I still remember that burn :(

And you're a pyromaniac. :p Which explains the 4th of July posts, now that I think about it.

Lol was going to go for my 1.3g license, but I decided I'de rather not be on the ATF's radar.

Ouch, how the hell did he do that? Load his own shells with rocksalt instead of shot?

FAQ says point-blank will take-out a wasp. I keep thinking of a way to load it with sodium and water to shoot flaming clouds of death at bugs. Must Have.

That's the sad thing, you pretty much have to go to china to get something like this done. With all the regulations and BS here, it's prohibitively expensive and time consuming to create anything. Apple even said the same thing. Thank your elected officials.

That said, SOLD! I fucking hate flies!

You do because it's a cheap product made of plastic. Our high tech sector is booming. High tech manufacturing, science, research, etc. All of those fields are onshore and making money.

It has nothing to do with "regulations and BS." The people here who could rapid prototype this want longer contracts and either more complex work or work in the area where they specialize. Most of our scientific industry is specialized in highly specific areas like optics, flow control, aluminum extrusion and so on. The mass production of cheap goods that require manual assembly is not our area of expertise, nor should it be. The economic yield is low, and workers are being replaced by automation even in China.

It's an interesting product, but it's often more fun to freeze them with an upside down can of compressed air. It makes disposal easy and you aren't shooting salt all over the place.

After seeing the movie "Contagion", I wouldn't be going near the place.

If you think restaurants are any more sanitary on one side of the world than the other you're pretty naive IMO (I'm alluding to the source of the whole contagion as portrayed in the movie's ending, i.e. a cook not washing his hands).

The salt gun looks amusing but I think I'll stick to my electric racket, those things are awesome... Plus you don't even have to aim, just swing like a madman at the general vicinity (aim helps tho).

The one I have right now has a different grill design than my previous one tho, more like a BBQ and less like a fence, the previous one had more layers... Point is mosquitoes seem to stick to my current one pretty often, not hard to shake them loose but it leads to a slight burnt smell as the shock is prolonged.

He should make one powerful enough to knock out roaches :p

A lot of people in the country reload shotgun shells. If you do a lot of shooting it's cheaper, and it's a lot easier to make custom loads, like the rocksalt load. Farmers tend to make rocksalt loads to deal with trouble-makers in a less-than-lethal manner. Some people don't listen to "stay off my land" when it's expressed verbally. They do, however, listen when the request comes from a shotgun.

I wonder if this little invention works on carpenter bees. I don't think it looks powerful enough for that.

This is almost as much fun as my wife's Walmart Tennis racket bug zapper...... cept' you get to cook what you kill with the zapper when one gets stuck in the mesh. fried bug does NOT smell like steak, let me tell you...

My wife just said that to me after seeing the video. Seriously LOVE HER!

Yeah I know the likes of reloading, my dad and I have done it before (I come from a hunting family so reloads were common). Just didn't know you could put rocksalt in it and actually have it work lol. Though I have seen I think it was pennies shot out of a 12 guage before lol.

Looks like a heavily-modified Nerf gun. Still, I'd probably buy one if it came in a pistol form factor.

Oh that's ripe for a Jaboody Dub "want to eat that Jello before the fly get's it, no f#@k it, it's now covered in salt and fly guts".

totally want one, but I'd need a bigger one for wasps. i have a feeling i'd try to get a wasp point blank, fail to kill it, agitate it instead and have a re-enaction of starship troopers in my living room.

Missed this thread somehow. Get it before it's deemed unsafe? This makes me wonder if his patent will hold in China or if they can go wild with it.

I was thinking this, too. I don't have flies, but there are wasps whenever I BBQ on the deck!

Soap water should take them pretty well. Soap strips their protective oil. We have a wasp nest very close to our house. I've given some thought about a super soaker for kicks. Can't find my raid anyways.

When I was kid we used BB/Pellet guns and just shoved salt in them. What ever happened to the spirit of McGuyver?
