The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

I got to play for a day, then got called down to Louisiana for two weeks to restore power. Now that I'm back, I'm thinking of rolling a new character. I have a Guardian that is Lvl 5 I think. But he wasn't all that fun.

What are the "funner" professions to play?

Elementalist is excellent if you enjoy throwing around lightning bolts and fire all over the place, and perhaps throwing in a few heals once in a while. Kind of a jack of all trades class at times.

After researching it a bit, it seems like a lot of people like the Elementalist and the Ranger. So I may make one of each.

It's up and down. I have been in plenty of events from the very start and ended up with bronze or silver despite being in the mobs face the entire fight, and also received golds plenty of times running into the event in the final few seconds and getting 1-2 whacks in on an enemy before it was dead. REALLY random but it doesn't really bother me.

Yea, likely just a glitch then. I've seen a few glitched events so far in my 90 hours.

So far, I like them all except Necro and Engineer. I have one of each class. I alternate between them all to keep things fresh.

When you say fun, what makes fun to you? Faster pace? Survivability? High damage?

I think the Thief is really fun, the class name is deceiving as he really doesn't steal much of anything. Its basically an Assassin from the original GW renamed to Thief.

That being said, my Ranger is my highest level, 23 so far. I do find him enjoyable but I think its because he's just so versatile.

Y'know a lot of people are saying Engineer is lame, but yet, to me, it looks like a lot of fun. What's so lame about it? Granted I haven't played it yet, focusing on one character for now.

- I didn't like the Ele, too squishy and too little damage.

- Ranger is fun but you do too little damage and your pet too much, I mean it's completly absurd, my pet can kill 2-3 mob before I take down one myself (my hits are 40-50-40 and my pet is 450-500-600)

- Thief is really cool, bit squishy but very high damage output and lots of versatility

- Mesmer is a different kind of gameplay, like him alot as well, can burst or do sustained damage plus illusions really mess with other players mind

Elementalist is very squishy, but too little damage? You're doing something wrong. I 2-3 shot every mob, every time.

That's just not true...

I didn't say lame now, keep in mind, I said I didn't like the Engineer. To be honest it feels like a true support class and that's just not my style of play. The Engineer only gets 3 weapon choices, less than another class, granted they make up for it with other skills but still, I like the freedom to choose. I like having Engineers around to lay down turrets in battle, but its just not an enjoyable class to play to me. It feels like the Engineer from Team Fortress 2. I'm not saying the Engineer is lame, useless or anything like that all, just not my cup of tea.

Can't agree with these statements. Ele can be a powerhouse for damage, and Ranger pet is far more useful now than the original game. Ranger's bow is actually quite damaging. I'm far more concered with centaur archers than warriors.

I somewhat agree with these statements. They aren't as easy to play as Warrior or Guardian, but they can be very fun.

Agreed. Ranger damage with bows depend on positioning and distance as well. Standing 30 degrees from straight on or behind or to the side of your target will help with short bow by stacking bleeds. Distance will increase longbow damage. The number 2 ability for axe and short bow also synergize very well. One stacks 5 bleeds, the other stacks 5 poisons when used appropriately.

I like playing a condition based ranger. So I don't see huge numbers, but I do see life bars draining quickly. I have no issues out DPSing my pet.

I'm level 67 and still having a blast.

picked up guild wars 2 -- first time mmorpg besides lineage 2 i played ages ago.

I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to figuring stuff out -- is there a strategy guide out there that will help me build the best character as fast as possible. like how to build weapons etc. Which items i should keep, which i should sell.

i'm a level 8 ranger right now. I've got a precision bow.

The thing i like most about this style of game is the alternate reality it creates. The world is so big, you can be in one place and it feels special because you had to travel quite a distance to get there. It is like a secret escape. Doing good deeds, characters speaking and dressing so nice and proper, ideals you kind of want to bring with you to the real world.

Honestly the longbow and greatsword were so nerfed that condition damage is really the best way to go right now for a ranger. Pay attention to just how much fire damage the torch "4" skill does. The "5" skill puts down an 8 second burning field for your Axe. The Axe's "2" skill on top of the auto attack is a combo finisher. The traps + condition damage is a no brainer.

Some of the dialogue is funny too if you ever take the time to listen to some of the NPC's.

There's one event early in the human area where you defend against some centaurs and one NPC comes running and shouting there's centaurs on my tail, and another NPC says, you don't have a tail, but I see what you mean. Its pretty funny.

The npc dialogue is hilarious. I overheard some npc talking about pets. " horses are the best pet ever, I mean, who would want a talking pet? "I dunno, pirates?"

the main story line is getting better and better. i just completed the level 50 part and it was amazing... epic. unfortunately in guild wars 2 levels might as well be 20 i was lvl 48 and the mobs were 50 and it was stupid hard

I was going to get this game, but I'm making myself wait until I've played Black Mesa: Source, Torchlight II, beat Artorias and Gwyn in Dark Souls, and The Walking Dead EP3. :(

37ish on my Thief now... and still feel so nub about the class. In WoW I was a spreadsheet loving rogue minmaxer... but I'm out of my element in this game. I've looked around a bit, but can anyone point me to a good source to learn about how the different types of stats effect damage output? I've been through the official wiki, and it's not quite clicking for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm tearing through mobs, but something feels off.

Probably best because if you started GW 2, you could throw all those other games away.

stats dont matter nearly as much as other games.. but i prefer power > precision > condition damage

48 thief here

I hope this isn't a stupid question or I'm overlooking something, but in the first GW, it was so easy to see what conditions were on you, and I'm just not seeing that in this one. I can spot the obvious conditions like cripple, but is there any UI indication to let me know exactly what conditions are on me? Its hard to use skills that remove conditions when I don't know what's on me.

Its actually a bit dissapointing as stats were important in the originall GW, this one seems to throw most all numbers out the door. I feel like the first GW was more of a thinking man's game, you had to decide which skills to bring, which one's worked well for the mission, which stats were most important for your build. GW 2 feels dumbed down a lot, whether that was intentional or not to make it easier to manage or just a side effect of the playstyle they've chosen, I don't know. I really do prefer the original GW skill and weapon system.

Power is basically a damage multiplier. For attacks that do not ignore armor, the damage multiplier is equal to Attacker_Attack / Defender_Armor. Attack is of course the sum of your power and the damage on your weapon while Armor is the sum of your defense on your armor and toughness. So if you increase your Attack by 10%, you will see a direct 10% damage increase. Keep in mind that increasing your Power by 10% will not increase damage by 10% due to the fact that Attack is the sum of weapon damage + Power.

Precision directly influences your crit chance. The effective damage of crit is calculated by (1 - crit_%) + (crit_% * crit_dmg).

For example, if you had a 50% chance to deal 150% crit damage, you would do:
(1 - 0.5) + (0.5 * 1.5) = 1.25 = 125% of your base damage, so on average the fact that you can crit increased your damage by 25%.

The base crit damage is 150%
Your base crit is quite low (something like 6%) and actually increases fairly rapidly with precision. I don't know the exact formula, I just know it's of course level based.

In theory, you should be able to calculate the optimal power / precision combination with some basic math. However, this might be irrelevant in the end due to the nature of stat combinations on gear.

Condition damage is applied to bleeds, burns, and poisons. Each skill appears to have a different multiplier for condition damage. The easiest way to see the effect is to directly read the tooltip for a skill to see the before/after +X condition damage and deduce the multiplier from there.

Agreed. My current backlog has frozen and games that I planned on pre ordering have not been placed yet. GW2 is definitely worth the money!

As far as I can tell, they are on the right side of the health "bubble" right above your skills. There's no "number" on them, each one will have a bar that slowly runs out letting you know how much time is left on it.

And here, I actually prefer the old GW system for knowing condition damage with health bar pips. I have no idea how much condition damage I'm doing anymore since they took the health bar pips off.

I have been having the same problem, since artificing and tailoring use the exact same special items like totems, bloods, etc. I have been buying them off the auction house to be honest, but only when they drop below 50c per.

I guess you have to explore a bit... After complaining yesterday I hit a gold mine. I rolled with a friend of mine in his starting area (he is Charr) and there is an area there, like a huge wall with ghosts. Spent about an hour there and got like 20 vials of weak blood and quite a few other totems. I was in heaven. :D I'm gonna farm that area a lil more today too and see if it wasn't a fluke hehe... screw me if I start buying this stuff off of TP

Yes, there is, but it's not obvious enough for my liking. I suppose I've grown used to WoW, and all the mods you could use to make sure you knew exactly what debuff was on your character the instant it happened. Anyway, it's in the same place as your boons, which is just above your right skill bar. Boons appear as an orange/gold color and conditions will appear just below them in red. The duration of each of them is represented by a light colored border around each boon/condition that will become shorter as it wears off.

true story..glean from it whatever you want:

been getting bored with this game..so yesterday, late, I logged in just to finish up a personal story quest...before I knew it, I discovered a large cave, did a couple de's, tried unsuccessfully to manage a catwalk/type/puzzle quest in order to get to a vista inside the cave..got tired of that, went to town and played with the broker for a few upgrades..then went to the crafting area to try to see what all the fuss is about cooking...became hooked

3 hours later, i logged off

I can't remember a game that sucked me into it when I was bored of it..LOL

I really like my engineer.. I have fun laying smack down with mines and throw bombs. And my rocket turrets kick so much ass, I love it :D. Mixing it up with elixirs and I can be quite effective in combat without feeling like a support class. But I hear you why this class can be seen as support class, tho. I guess it's all in the attitude how you approach it too, but that can be said for the classes, me thinks.

So what's the overall feeling of this game? I sort of held off pre-ordering due to me not really liking the GW combat feeling but the videos make it look pretty smooth...

i have a wide variety of friends playing all of them including myself love the game. besides some optimization issues i have very very few gripes. overall amazing.

Just tried to purchase it off gamestop since everywhere seems sold out. God damn order is "processing" and I don't know if they actually even have it in stock.

In before complaining about nVidia, oh wait... :D

I'm sure there are people that enjoy the class, I just don't. The playstyle of that class bores me to tears.
