For gaming purposes, which processor would be best?

Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition or Phenom II X6 1045T. No overclocking.

Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition.

Games rarely scale to six cores and the higher base clock of the 965 will beat the 1045T.

i'd agree the 965 would be a better chip at stock settings for gaming.
only a couple of games i know of that use 4+ cores, Civ V & BF3.

it's a shame you're not considering OC'ing, even a modest bump. core for core, clock for clock, thubans are a bit better than denebs (tweaked core, better IMC etc). if you'd consider OC'ing, the 1045 would be better, they clock just as well as the old X4's or even better in some cases.

Depends what game. Some games do take advantage of 6 or more cores such as BF3 and that is where things are headed. I've got a 1055t and am very happy with it. You really should overclock though.

965!

I have a one un opened with a heatsink and fan in my for sale thread for $95 shipped.

I can say that the denebs are awesome overclockers: My 955 is running at 4.2ghz, which is a 1ghz OC. It chews through games no problem. Even crysis seems to be tamed (crysis is infamous for scaling according to CPU power). Though, if I could get my hands on a X6 BE, I'dd take it for my rendering and art needs. For gaming, the extra cores don't do anything!

Some games use the extra cores, some don't. For the future more cores will never hurt.
Though the 4 core PhII's are quite good price wise.

The 1045 I have went to 3.2 with OC'ing Genie on my MSI mobo. I didn't have to touch a thing.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I think we'll go with the 965 since no aftermarket HSF will be used.

This PC is going to my friend's 10-yr old nephew who is a budding gamer and we have a $300 budget to work with excluding monitor.

Considering (I think) the 1045t is the same essentially as an 1100t with less cache... I bet you could hit 3.4 or 3.6 without even breaking a sweat and maybe even 3.8 or higher if you have a really awesome cpu.

It's the same with less "clock speed" and it's mp is locked, but you can still OC it no problem if desired.

965BE can be OC via MULTI, they are based off the same architecture so the 965 can be better for gaming due to high clocks.
