Where in the World Is Internet Explorer 10?

Forget Waldo, where the heck is the promised update to Internet Explorer? Windows 8 comes with Internet Explorer 10 pre-installed, but there is no mention anywhere on when the new standalone version will be available for Windows 7.

Puzzled over the non-appearance of IE 10 and the lack of any information surrounding it, we put the question to Microsoft and received only this response; "There are no further updates from Microsoft on this at this time. As soon as we have more information to share, we'll get in touch."

Don't call us, we'll call you.

Actually, I started using IE again (IE9 specifically) after the longest absense now that Firefox reliability seems to be in the crapper (apparently mostly flash related, but fail is fail and Chrome and IE have better compatability and reliability now).

At the risk of sounding harsh... Who Cares where IE 10 is? I know I don't. I use IE to access my modem's configuration page and nothing else. Its Chrome all the way. At least till something better surfaces and I would never expect that to be a Microsoft Product.

I may catch some heat here but I have no problems with the direction IE is heading. I use IE 9 from time to time and have had no issues with it. It feels much lighter than previous versions Full disclosure, I still like chrome better :)

That's typical Microsoft. "We don't want you to focus on that right now, Look at this over here and we'll get to that later"

Youtube = works better on IE
Some random flash and java loading = works better on IE
everything else = chrome

I have the feeling that Win 7 is going to be totally ditched by MS.

They are desperate not to have another WinXP on their hands, and with Win8 being so weak, feature wise, they must do something to make people "upgrade".

That was my thinking, anything they can do to make people upgrade to windows 8 they'll do it.
I could care less about IE, I use firefox.

IE 8 and 9 aren't THAT bad, and they've been more trouble-free than Firefox for me lately. Yes, I'm another Chrome user, but the browsers are closer to one another than ever.

I'm happy with IE 8 and 9. Firefox is a pain and Chrome is Creepy Uncle Google spyware pretending to be a useful browser (making it a trojan, actually).

Really though, Lynx is probably the best multi-platform browser out there so as long as I can execute the program, it doesn't matter who bundles what with an OS or not. :)

Chrome would be in fact best browser, apart from its interface which terribly sucks, tabs on top of the screen is worst idea ever, not able to even move them somewhere else.

I know everyone seems to bash IE, but for corporations its use is pretty widespread so it being kept up to date is important.

I wouldnt be suprised if MS silently tried to drop support but not for IE10 - that will just be slow, but there is no chance for IE11 when it comes round.

A lot of us bash IE because we're forced to support it well beyond it's useful lifespan.

ActiveX is alive and well. Those who need it cares. Also companies who rely on IE to enforce domain policies care.

And shill of the day award goes to this guy^. Just look at his tag and ask yourself why he hasn't fixed himself yet....

MS guys have their heads so far up their asses they'll never see the light.

Huh? How is it shilling? I run Linux and Microsoft servers, two of the Microsoft servers being SharePoint (2007 and 2010) which relies on ActiveX, Silverlight and other browser components. You try and use every feature in SharePoint using Firefox and Chrome. It's simple fact, not shilling. As for group policy, it's also fact - Internet Explorer can be controlled via group policy.

I shill for Microsoft? That's a fucking laugh.

Even when I disagree with Azhar''s views, he's usually really insightful and offers well thought out responses (which don't have to be long ones either) that show he's at least thinking about something before commenting.

I think his insight is based on home use. He's probably a gamer, not a business user. Can't be everything I guess.

Remember how Microsoft promised to use Windows Update to patch Flash? Well Windows 8 is now RTM and Flash is still at version 11.3 and it's also impossible to update it manually. I think Microsoft is pushing their software releases a little too fast.

There is a pretty big rift between gamers who are only hobbyist sorts and people who are supporting a business enterprise (large or small). Business IT is a whole other animal than gaming at home, but I suppose that he might chime in and say something about where his perspectives come from.

We're an animal? Can I be a cat?

Actually I'm a professional web developer and despise Sharepoint at work. Its one of the shittiest products MS has ever released and I cry when I see people use it here at work. The reason it doesn't work on real browsers (sorry IE), is because it is a locked down piece of shit that hates open standards and the Internet. 4000 line CSS files by default. No accessibility support. Hundreds of rendering/validation errors and improper HTML markup.

Just because you want to make a ton of money and rape your customers, that is your choice. I'll stick to the free and open web and platforms that work right the first time.

I am also a Linux system administrator, so maybe I'm a bit biased. Live free or die.

Sorry about my attitude I just loathe IE as it makes my job that much more difficult. I apologize for any rudeness, just venting. No hard feelings chaps?

You make it sound like a lot of us IT folks have a say in what we can run in businesses. I'm just a sysadmin. SharePoint's been in the company longer than me by several years. It also sounds like you're basing IT decisions on Microsoft hatred than practical reasons. There's nothing difficult about running SharePoint.

Now if you want to talk about Primavera Web App which runs on Java application server (I'm using WebLogic for that one), that's a product I want to piss on and set on fire. :-P

We're an animal? Can I be a cat?

I think enterprise IT is more like a beached whale and the people who support it are akin to rescuers trying to keep it wet and from crushing its own internal organs while we wait for high tide to roll in. That aside though, I love kitties! :)

No angry stuff from me. I was just kinda like, "o_O!!! B-but we <3 Azhar here! :("

No problem. I'm called worse sometimes. For some reason some of the [H]'ers think I'm an iSheep too.

Can't I enjoy technology as a whole without the name calling, dammit? :-P

Name calling in a forum is mandatory, isn't it? More importantly, name calling with insults that don't even mean anything, but have adopted a meaningless life of their own like "hipster" are must-use things.

Yep. And they dont want to say that at this time because it would great negative feedback in the community.

So let me get this straight. Nobody gives a rat's ass about IE, but if IE10 was Windows 8 exclusive suddenly people would care and be mad? Sounds about right for a bunch of whiners.

Browsers are free, use what you want to, and stop pretending to be better than everyone else.

You mean the same companies that still plod along on 6 and 7? Really...I'm starting to subconsciously group IE users into the same category as AOL users.

Some people seem to live just to get upset...

^^ This.

I've always used IE for most things and will continue to do so until I see a compelling reason to switch. I also have a client who deals in healthcare and use group policies to manage IE.

This browser thing has long turned into the Apple/MS, Nvidia/ATI nonsense and even funnier because of the sheer number of "cooler than thou" users' machines I've had the pleasure of cleaning up over the years. Get the fuck over yourselves, people.

to the fact is none of the browsers are perfect, and you are going to use the once you like/fits your usage/personality, i see no reason for people to get worked up over this.

as for getting IE10 well, microsoft already has a plan and is gonna follow through. it might take long but eventually they'll have to release stand alone update and who knows IE11 might be there to catch it up.

Maybe it's not possible to backport due to being too dependent on the Metro-style...sorry, I mean the "Windows 8 style"-style.
