The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Me and my brother are in if you'll take us Toe. Any sort of faction restrictions we should know about before we hit the server?

Our whole thing is NO restrictions! No time reqs! We accept cool, mature, laid back people that are about having fun. Most of our members have families, jobs, and other commitments that can restrict play time and we understand that. Check us out here and see if we're right for you.

you love mumbling. personally i hates it. hahah. im down to chip in for a server whatever program it may be :)

I don't know why, it's just better overall, and I was a heavy Ventrilo user back in the day. The sound quality is just much better IMO, and I've never had a Mumble server crash (knock on wood), but I've had countless issues with Ventrilo over the years.

Ill keep you guys on the radar. I am sure we will know which way is up in a few days.

BTW, Raidcall is free to use. I haven't used Vent in years, but my experience with RC is that it's a better version of Vent with more features minus the cost. I've never used Mumble. You can check it out, nothing to lose.

At least 60 hours from the BWEs & stress test's alone.... and I am still chomping at the bit to play more.

Been there for that and seen the same types of comments for every mmo launch.

The whole limited open beta approach it's brilliant marketing. With a limited amount of time to try something people WANT to enjoy it and rarely look for issues is once the unrestricted access begins pistols start really taking notice of issues.

It's basic psychology, tell a kid he can only have a certain toy for a couple hours a week and it will be the greatest toy ever and he will look forward to it. Give him the toy for good and watch how quickly he gets bored with it.

But like I said comments like yours are extremely common only time will tell.

All of These Things Can Get You XP in Guild Wars 2..found on another forum

Renown Hearts (closest thing GW2 has to traditional questing)
Dynamic/Meta Events- sometimes following an event chain will net you enough for well over an entire level's worth of XP if you follow it through.

World versus World- leveling up in PvP...? Yup. Every beneficial action you perform in WvW- killing enemy players, securing supply lines, capturing or defending a keep, all of it gets you XP.
Dungeons- replayable, can be done in either story or explorable mode, always with lots of XP

Personal Storyline- each storyline quest gets you a big ol' chunk of XP
Skill Challenges
Vistas
Daily Achievements- a set of things you can do once every day for a bunch of extra XP. I didn't know about this in time for any of the betas/stress tests, and still got enough XP from other stuff to get to ~level 20 without repeating a single event/heart, so this blew my mind.

Hidden Achievements- things like completing jumping puzzles, for instance, often get you an achievement, and those achievements get you XP.
Exploration- yes. literally JUST the exploration itself gets you XP. Go to an area you've never been before and poke around = XP. This includes cities, many of which are totally massive and have plenty of incentive to explore besides the XP. But you get it anyway.
Reviving players- taking some notes from TF2 on this one... reviving a downed player gets you more XP than killing ~10 of your average mob. Mmmm, incentivizing teamwork.

Gathering
Crafting/Cooking

oh and

Killing things- yeah, it gets you XP. But just because they couldn't even let this basic concept go without doing something awesome, allow me to explain the concept of Bonus XP: the longer a given mob has been alive in the gameworld, the more XP it is worth above baseline (you'll see a popup of Bonus XP +Whatever when you kill it). So if you go way off the beaten path to a totally unpopulated wilderness area, chances are the stuff you kill will be worth substantially more XP. Plus you can guess the relative age of creatures by how much bonus XP they're worth

How is exploring in the game? In wow, you'd see something cool, go explore it, and find nothing interactive, except maybe a chest.

Will there be chests or other cool things to find if you go far off the beaten path?

The short answer is yes. The whole dynamic event systm is basically designed around exploring, since you have no quest log with a tracker, you just have to explore until you come to a new event or event chain.

Tehre are also lots of little easter eggs around, from what i have seen in videos and on reddit, there is a whole crapload of little things to find by looking around. Like that one underwater organ thing (when you play the gw2 theme on it, a big shell opens up with a chest inside) that I'm sure was linked in this thread at one point, lots of unexpected little bits you can find.

Well I ended up just buying the game so I plan on hopping on tonight. Knowing me I will end up as a ranger or warrior.

Is there a profession like engineering(wow) that gives benefits in pvp?

Not that it matters, but just for the sake of semantics: profesions in GW2 are th character classes. The corollary to wow professions would be crafting skills.

But I'm not aware of a particular crafting that gives an advantage in pvp like the old gnomish death ray and stuff used to be, its more about gear and consumables in the GW2 crafting afaik.

theres platforming challenges too with achievements and chests involved

Yeah, Mumble servers are also quite a bit cheaper. I rent a Mumble server for me and my friends (about 15-20 of us) and it's only $32/yr (with Mumbleboxes) compared to Ventrilo's $60/yr (with typefrag).

I'd also like to add that you get loot from players you kill in WvW as well, and the drops will be tailored to your level, just like if you're a higher level killing lower level monsters out in the world.

Yeah. I only fully discovered one whole zone (which by doing so you get a lot of exp and quite a bit of free crafting mats from 100% map exploration), but I had found a chest or two back in some cave that seemed worthless until I went in to the end. There are also secret jumping puzzles that will reward you with a chest.

So is the /map chat channel the one for the zone? Are there server-wide channels for trade etc?

So do we have a guild forming up on Borliss Pass or something?

Also, I hope this game isn't all hype. So many MMORPG's have been super-hyped, then turned out to be failures. I've got it downloaded and ready to go, and I guess we'll all know soon enough if it's going to actually be good.

I found it was mostly hype during the beta weekend events & stress tests I tried out. Little actual substance, sadly :( which is unfortunate since this game has a heavier pvp focus than many recent titles. That's also why I waited on trying TSW prior to buying it... to see how it panned out. After having been burnt on so many MMO's the past while, I was skittish... I bit the bullet a couple of weeks after its launch and have been happy playing it since with a few hundred hours in on it and lifetime purchased :D.

My advice? Wait a week or two on GW2 and see what pans out or doesn't. With so much hype around this game, you're not going to get any real "truthful" info until then to make a real decision.

I am one of those that are really excited about the game and I agree with this.

Not this shit again. :p

Now people are going to start a feud again.

yeah not bad advice. i feel like its been hard out there for games.. all this prepurchasing preordering shit got people anticipating these games and then feeling let down even when the game was worth the price

like SWTOR was awesome. I felt like I got my moneys worth for the single player alone the quest and stories were so bad ass.. did some flashpoints etc. then i quit after a few weeks @ lvl 50. I wasnt mad and i didnt bash it but i was a little disappointed. Hope GW2 lives up to the hype because i am dying to play ;)

My main point was that people who are on the fence should hold out a little bit until the hype machine fades a bit. Like most/all MMO launches, everyone says X is the best thing since sliced bread, until a week or two later when they actually are over the honeymoon phase of the game and have seen it for what it's worth, good and/or bad. :)

I gotcha, understood. Agree too.

Lifetime in TSW will be fairly short by the look of things. What makes GW2 shine is that there is no subscription. If you can get it at a decent discount then it's a really safe buy in terms of getting bang for your buck. I paid $40 for my pre-order and will be playing it in a few hours. I expect that I at least get 40 hours out of it to hit the $1/hr "worth it" mark.

Yeah, if I hadn't bought the collector's edition for $150 I would have felt like I got my money's worth out of SWTOR, terrible as it ended up being. And, by all means, if someone thinks they'll get their money's worth out of GW2 for $40-50 (which isn't bad at all) regardless of them wanting/not wanting to play it very long, I'd say go for it also. However, I wouldn't buy into any mmo currently that is just launching, and expect off of word of mouth whether you will find it good for you longer-term.

Yep, everyone's varies. We posted at the same time but with basically the same points ;) just now. I've already well exceeded my "worth it" mark with paying $199 lifetime + 38 box-cost for TSW and from here it's all gravy. With GW2's much lower price, it's easy to make it worth it even if you don't think you'll play it long-term and can be treated more like a single-player game in terms of "worth it" for purchase price or not. I'm just advising people to keep their expectations at "excited" rather than "gamechanging moment of best-things-in-life-ever" for when GW2 launches and getting let down as no game can meet the type of hype that this one's getting (and that's not a dig at GW2 at all, it has an incredible amount of hype and I don't care WHAT game it is, none can ever meet these kinds of expectations).

Cool!

Thanks for the info folks

I played the original GW regularly for over 5 years, the last 2 years I've logged in occasionally here and there just for kicks but even at 5-7 years for an initial $50 purchase was well worth it, even with all of the expansion packs, I got way more than money's worth out of the original game. That's probably the only game I can honestly say that about. I'm hoping GW2 will give me a few years of enjoyment as well.

Yep - there's a cash shop.

You can get various things such as vanity items like clothes and gear, extra keys to unlock dropped locked chests, short duration boosts (+exp, +karma, etc.), dyes, mini pets, etc.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gem_Store

dyes are free though i thought they are just apart of your character sheet. i saw a video the other day dude was just dying his shit whatever he wanted in town

im pretty sure you cant buy gear either cause that would be pay to win and they said they were against that :O

i know its how you get bag space and bank slots

Everyone starts with a set of default dyes unlocked. The act of dying something is *free*, but unlocking additional dyes is not free.

Well I hope NCSoft doesn't manage the cash shop like they do for Lineage2... so many pay to win items in there and basically you have to buy the XP boosts or never reach cap because the grind is so bad.
