Sleeping Dogs

Been playing it yesterday, and I got to say, it kicks ass. Now to get more time to play it this week...

That title brings high hopes for Hitman: Absolution. If Square Enix makes sure that the game will be published on PC that way this game is, and will make sure, that new Hitman is same quality as Sleeping Dogs, then I won't be afraid to make new Hitman day 1 purchase.

Now... if they could bring a decent FInal Fantasy again, as the last one was a bit meh :)

Hell, it would take a LOT for me to NOT have that new Hitman game on day one. After six years?

But you're right: This release certainly would imply good tidings overall.

Hey. Why no comment on me playing the game?

Wasn't that what people were saying about D3? ;P I was saying same.... until I played the game.

Also, it's ironic, that publishers that started on PC side - EA, Ubi, others are now producing crap ports and crap games, while the original console publisher, with no touch of European market, and maker of great jRPGs now release great PC game.

A nice PA Report article on the work put into the PC version of the game. This is sounding like one I'll have to pick up once I work through my backlog form the summer sales.

Has anyone figured out how to eleminate or reduce the mouse lag?

Not really. Adjust DPI and fiddle with the game menus. When you're driving, take your hand away from the mouse entirely because it's insanely oversensitive during those situations.

thanks...no 1 particular thing really stands out graphics wise as being amazing but it seems to meld together overall...the weather effects on the environment do look really good though while the character animations don't look all that great...but I guess if you stand around and take static screenshots the flaws will stand out more but maybe in motion things look more impressive

plus the gameplay seems to be the star with this game

Stills shots don't do it justice. It looks awesome and plays awesome. It's got it all. :)

I put this game on my Wishlist now. I still have other games to finish and also other games to buy, so I'll probably wait until it's at a discounted price.

I've a few questions, for those who can answer, since so many seem to have high praise:

• How much gunplay is actually in the game and how is it in general?
• Since it seems like predominantly melee, is it any less enjoyable without more gunplay?
• Does the melee actually feel visceral/satisfying?
• Does it ever getting tiresome to keep running into the same "fight five guys" situation (which I see a lot of; almost too predictable)?
• How much is there to actually do in the city/game world?

I've watched some vids and seem some in-game "minigames", almost reminding me of GTA IV, but since you're not a criminal, are there are similar side quests... just on the other side of the law?

Such as, instead of stealing cars, to retrieve stolen cars etc?

I think you get where I'm going. Would love to hear some feedback regarding these things, thanks.

Melee combat in this game is 20x better then any GTA or similar game, if you played Batman : AA/AC you will enjoy it.

Gunplay is not as big a thing in this game, you can't actually keep guns or anything, they are more so a side-weapon you will pick up/find (the higher level cop ability allows you to get guns from the trunk of any police car) otherwise you'll have to get guns from your enemies or find them laying around for certain missions.

The gunplay itself is fun, it's much more offensive gunplay oriented, jumping over cover gives you slow mo to aim and take out enemies. There's also missions throughout the game where you ride shotgun and have to use firearms to take out vehicles, it's fun to blow out tires and send cars/people flying off motorcycles and cars flipping over.

As far as side stuff goes, most of the side stuff (Drug busts for cops, stealing cars and things for triads) gets a bit repetitive, it's mainly filler stuff to do to rack up points/for achivements. The side stuff is probably the weakest part of the game, it's not in-depth side missions, one drug bust is pretty much the exact same as the other, you go there, kill some dudes, hack the camera, go back to your apartment and watch the camera and highlight the "leader" for the cops to arrest, it gets old quite quickly.

Throughout the game you will do both cop oriented story missions (IE helping take down a criminal, finding a serial killer, etc) and your triad type story missions, basically woven together throughout the game. That's where the game shines and where I find the most fun.

Thanks for the quick feedback.

Am a little confused regarding all the "extra stuff" to do in-game that people keep referring to, though. Sounds like it could be fun, but you've stated it can get a bit repetitive.

Are there other things to do as well?

Sounds like people are having a blast with the main game, but also all the "side/extra stuff", though I'm not sure to what people are really referring. Especially since it's being touted as so "open world" with "a lot to do".

Maybe it's just that those things people are finding to be a lot of fun due to how the gameplay works/feels?

Sounds great over all, but I just want to be clear on "all the stuff" you can do in-game.

The melee and animations (and general visuals) definitely look impressive.

Well for me the side stuff isn't that fun, mainly because I'm not the type of person that loves chasing achievements and things.

There are a lot of things to collect (health shrines that give you more health as you find them, lockboxes which give you money and some give clothing items, jade statues which unlock new melee combat moves) apart from those side missions I talk about.

There are also "yellow" side missions which are more fun/different then the drug busts and races (those are the two main "side" things to do, racing or drug busts).

There's also the Karaoke singing, hacking cameras (which you have to do for the drug busts, but some aren't connected to that).

Its open world but its linear, its not like JC2.... The side things are there to basically fill up xp for either, Face, Cop, or Triad which leads to unlocking moves/abilities for each one of those categories: for example, one of the first Cop unlocks gives you a slim jim to open car doors... There's also statues you collect to gain martial art moves, and health shrines around the city, when you find them all your hp doubles etc.

It does get repetitive though, it feels like they cut content out for DLC's imo, there's a solid 25 hours worth of gameplay, after that you're going to have to force yourself to play...

My only gripes are: the wonky camera, no way to repair vehicles and no way to stash stolen vehicles....

Protip, there's a golden cleaver in the back of the traid enforcer vehicle, 1 shot kills people when thrown lol.

So I decided to look up how much my HK dollars were in USD. 450,000HK equal $58,000. Nice to see this game doesn't have inflated prices. If I recall, other games make getting to a million USD really simple.

I mentioned earlier how I liked the way you had to buy your own cars. I think an enhancement to that would be to make it so you had to buy your own safehouses/apartments outside of the initial shack offering. There'd be massive amounts in game to "look at" (or purchase) but each has its own "buff/nerf" (like the food/clothing buffs) and cost a lot. A high crime shack would be cheaper, but brings a higher police presence (easier to get lit up), and less prestige (face in this game). Further enhancements on to this could be really fun for the genre in the future. More RPG like elements with all the action.

Heck, you could do a score system with leaderboards once the story is completed. This would keep players in game and needing cash to purchase things like guns and vehicles. So they'd have to continue playing and knock over armored cars or banks.

Just babbling ...

What are "yellow" side missions?
How do they differ that make them more fun?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out what all there is to do in-game.

Yellow missions are for your Face level and they are more random in terms of what you do. You might send someone's car into the bay for insurance money or you might have a drunk guy bothering one of the businesses you're extorting for protection. Throw his ass in a dumpster or the back of a car, lol

Green is main story, blue for the police missions, light blue for drug busts/camera hacking (both go toward police score) red are triad-specific missions to boost your triad level.

I love the missions and random events with free-running. Ton of fun to do that and get to see the more gritty side alleys and whatnot

We're currently looking at a number of issues that have been expressed through the forums. None of these are guaranteed to be fixed to everyone's standards obviously, but we are looking at tweaking some of the more pressing issues that you guys are having (mouse controls, camera, UI, crashes, etc). I can't foresee an update coming before early next week (and they may even come in a number of smaller patches in order to get fixes out quicker).

Once again, nothing is set in stone as the individual developers have to weigh the impact on other systems any time they make changes, but we'll do our best to get this out quickly and to people's satisfaction. Thanks again for your patience.

I like everything about the game, except when I got to the first hacking mission yesterday, I wanted to throw my laptop out the window. It's so infuriatingly bad and annoying. I don't want to guess 4 numbers...I want to play some mini-game like in Deus-Ex.

Its actually insanely simple.

start out with 0 1 2 3
you'll find at least one of those numbers,

then add a 4 or 5

then add 6 or 7 etc.

Well that's what I do pretty much, it just feels like a forced part of the game, and I don't care for it at all. I'd rather, honestly, have it just be automated. Plug in phone, auto-hack, go back to crib and find the supplier. Why do I need to guess numbers, this is 2012, technology should think for me. ;)

It's a minor nuisance. At the very least I would have hoped as you opened "cop perks" that maybe "fast/automatic hacking" would have been one of those perks.

cool, there's a demo available through Steam...try before buy!

Played the demo last night. I'm pretty disappointed with it, actually. I know it's just a demo, but I don't get that open-world feeling like in GTA IV. It seems like an on-rails game akin to Call of Duty and that ilk.

Also, the Eyefinity support is pretty piss-poor. I get all claustrophobic with the POV.

The controls are pretty horrible for mouse and keyboard. It's like the Batman games gone wrong.

Again, this is just the demo...I had such high hopes...am I all wrong or is this how the retail version is?

You guys miss a big part of the game. The races. They are fun too since the game's driving mechanics are almost best in terms of an open world that I have seen as far as I remember.

It's not. The rails come off for good after the intro parts of the game are finished.

Nothing new there unfortunately.

Been fine here for me. There is still a mouse acceleration issue that's most obvious when driving. Take your hand off the mouse when driving and you're gold.

Nope. The full game kicks all kinds of ass. Most of the time demos don't get patched.

I'm pretty sure the demo is still based on the earliest form of the game whereas a pretty damned robust patch came out a few days ago that was over a gig's worth.

Be patient in the early goings. They deliberately have some rails on you to get your feet wet and then it's off to the races. :)

I'm confident they'll do their best. They've already shown impressive support for the game.

Got the full version game, in the full version you can download a free high resolution Texture Pack DLC, I recommend everyone download this if you have the full game, has much improved texture quality, and it's free.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/202181/

The high-resolution texture pack updates the game to a new level, bringing eye-watering detail and crisp clear rendering to everything from city skyscrapers to ancient temples.

You need 1Gb or more graphics memory in order to use the High resolution Texture Pack. Please make sure your system requirements exceed the recommended specs before attempting to install.

When installed, the High Resolution Texture Pack is an option in the game’s graphics settings. Please configure it after installing the Pack.

Is this kind of like GTA but a bit more on rails or is it better with more stuff to do other than randomly killing people and driving around :p

I'm gonna try the demo, but wanna get some opinions here too since it seems the demo is still from the crappy build.

Just buy it, it's worth it. It's a Hong Kong version of GTA, but the storyline seems more fluid and satisfying, as if you're actually a part of something. Plus there's ability points you can use towards bettering your character, which I think is neat.
